From 1971 to 1977, the EPA hired freelance photographers who ultimately took more than 15,000 photos relating to “environmental problems, EPA activities and everyday life in the 1970s.

More recently, photos from this Documerica Project were digitized by the U.S. National Archives. The entire collection can be found here. The galleries even include a few farm photos.

Meantime, take a trip back to the 1970s with these snapshots from more than 40 years ago.

Perfect example why the EPA needs to be left intact! Unfortunately the present greed-driven administration appears to want to undo much of what the EPA has done to make this a better, safer environment in which to live, all for the sake of the all-mighty dollar! And if some of the feedback postings I've seen here are any indication farmers and farm-groups are some of the most vocal against the EPA! I hope they are the minority but one has to wonder if they aren't just as bad as corporate America.

Thanks for sharing these, Ben. Scary to see so much smog and polluted water, especially knowing the toll it took on people's health. I hope that's only our country's past and not its future.
