One of the Top Tools for Top Yields

At harvest, there are lessons to learn from a yield monitor. Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie discusses how a calibrated yield monitor is a tool to take yields to the next level.

“A calibrated yield monitor is unbeatable,” Ferrie says. “It’s one of the most valuable tools for a farmer.”
To calibrate your equipment, Ferrie says picking a consistent area in the field is important.
“In 2010, farmers were reporting 100 bu. swings through the field, and we can’t have that when we’re calibrating. Consider cutting headland to help pick the right spot and find consistency.”
Ferrie says that although calibration takes time, it pays off.
“Make the time to get your harvest set up right,” he says. “If you want spatial variability, it takes time. But a good yield map is key to adopting variable rate technology. It’s a foundation pieces for VRT.”
