    New Beginnings

    It’s the first day of June. Not quite the first day of summer, but certainly the first day of the month. With all of the 1930s-esque tariffs being thrown around, we are certainly looking at a different international trade environment than we’ve had any time in the new millennium, let alone in May. The first of the month is also a focus for investment funds, putting new money to work and re-investing old money from positions cashed out for asset allocation adjustment reasons.

    Things Are Heating Up

    Summer doesn’t officially start for a few more weeks, but things are heating up. In eastern Nebraska, the forecasts call for a number of 90 degree days in the next week, well above normal for late May. The NWS 6-10 and 8-14 day forecasts show high odds for the entire US mainland being above normal on temps into the second week of June. It isn’t just the weather. All of the ag commodities in our table except for hogs were higher this week.

    There is a complicated strategy game called Go which is played by an estimated 40 million people. It originated in China more than 2500 years ago. It has a larger board (standard grid is 19 x 19) than chess, and many more potential moves for each turn. The objective is to surround more territory than the opponent. The US and China are playing a complex geopolitical game.

    Stability Is a Myth So Make Money from Chaos

    Nassim Taleb wrote a best seller back in 2007 titled The Black Swan. We have adopted the title as a term for improbable (or not thought possible) events that do in fact occur and have big impacts on markets or society. He argued it’s impossible to calculate the risks of Black Swan events or predict their occurrance.
