    Balloon Earth

    The markets seemed a little surprised this week to see headlines touting a large increase in EU imports of US soybeans, and sales of US beans to Argentina. These shouldn’t be a surprise, as they are manifestations of my Balloon Earth concept, first shared with our farmer clients more than a year ago. What is Balloon Earth? It simply says that for commodity supply/demand purposes the Earth is a closed system. Food isn’t exported from the earth, nor is any imported. Where am I going with this?

    Rhythm of the Seasons

    There is a definite change of pace around Labor Day. Football season starts, and your social calendar starts to fill up. Everybody but maybe the retirees is back from vacation, if they’re the sort that takes one. The corn and beans dry down, and the bins fill up. A combine, truck, wagon or grain dryer breaks, because that is what they do. USDA hikes yields, because big crops get bigger; and prices go down, because we’re never going to get rid of all this stuff. Repeat the pattern again next year

    Timing is Everything

    Whether it’s a joke, a rain dance or trading the wheat market, timing is everything. For the joke, if the timing is off the result is either mean or unfunny. For wheat, well, there is an old axiom that says, “trade wheat, sleep in the street”. USDA is calling for world wheat stocks to decline in 2019, and for the global stocks/use ratio to be the tightest this century. With that setup, you’d expect US wheat exports to be up and prices to be higher. The folks at WASDE certainly think so.
