    The US equity markets dropped sharply this week, whether you are looking at the Dow, the S&P, the Russell or your IRA balance. Traders are prone to bottom picking, trying to buy things that are a lot cheaper than they were when bought just a couple days ago. The conventional advice to such traders is “don’t try to catch a falling knife”. That is indeed difficult to do on the pointy end, and is most easily accomplished on the handle end, i.e. still on the way down.

    Muddy Waters

    This week’s theme works on a number of levels. The 5 day QPF rainfall forecast calls for 3-7” of rain in a swath from Texas to Wisconsin. That will lead to a lot of muddy water and muddier fields, with limited harvest activity for TX, OK, KS, MO, IA, IL and MN this week. Mold and other moisture related quality problems are being reported for soybeans in several areas. The supply/demand picture is about as clear as mud.

    The Irish Curse

    While growing up, I was told there was an Irish curse wishing another “"May you live in interesting times". According to Wikipedia, this is “an English expression purported to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically, with the clear implication that "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquility are more life-enhancing than interesting ones, which, from a historical perspective, usually include disorder and conflict.
