Dairy Cow Slaughter Still Running Ahead of 2012

Some 259,000 dairy cows were slaughtered in federally inspected plants in September, the United States Department of Agriculture reported Thursday.

That’s 8,000 more than a year ago (+3.2%), but 7,000 fewer than in August. However, on a per day basis, dairy farmers sent 12,950 cows to hamburger nirvana in September compared to 12,090 in August.

Year-to-date, 2,342,000 dairy cows have been slaughtered. That’s 54,000 more than a year ago, or 2.4%.
