USDA recently opened its comment period for a proposed rule to establish the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. This law was mandated by Congress in 2016, also referred to as GMO labeling.

"This rulemaking presents several possible ways to determine what foods will be covered by the final rule and what the disclosure will include and look like," says Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. "We are looking for public input on a number of these key decisions before a final rule is issued later this year."

The rule will require all food manufacturers and entities that label foods for retail sale to disclose information about bioengineering and bioengineered food ingredients. This will provide a national uniform standard for disclosure information about bioengineered foods.

Comment period is open for 60 days—until July 3, 2018. It will not be extended and comments can be submitted here. They can also be mailed to the Docket Clerk at 1400 Independence Ave., Room 4543-South, Washington, DC 20250 or faxed to (202) 960-0338.

As a US citizen I have the right to know exactly what food I am purchasing to ingest. Just like I read the labels to determine all the ingredients in a product and it’s country of origin, I need to be informed if any ingredients in the product contain Genetically Modified Organisms. GMO foods are NOT the same as non-GMOs. I choose to eat organic only because I don’t know how else to determine what is being sold to me. Full disclosure of exactly what a product contains is necessary and needs to be a federally mandated law. As a US citizen, I demand no less.
