Uniform Density Denies Denitrification

Getting a hold on water management is an important step to mastering the Systems Approach for your field. Farm Journal’s Associate Field Agronomist Missy Bauer says, "Water management relates to so many other aspects. When we think about tillage, planting populations, or potential disease issues, all of that relates to water management. All of this fits into the Systems Approach."

Weather is not the only factor that will determine a water management plan. In Episode 9 of Corn College TV Season 3, Bauer says, "Number one: we want to start with making sure that we have uniform soil density."

In the spring, the infiltration rate of uniform soil prevents pooling and saturated conditions that cause denitrification. As the planting season continues and less rainfall is expected, the uniform density allows good root growth and capillary action from the subsoil.
