11 States Crown July 'Smart Irrigation Month'

Colorado and Louisiana led the charge in May. See which other nine states have joined the fray.

No farmer can grow a crop without water, yet this resource is sometimes taken for granted. However, farmers with irrigated ground are managing those acres more efficiently with smart irrigation practices.

Now, an industry-wide initiative seeks to increase public awareness of the value of water-use efficiency during summer's peak demand. To date, a total of 11 states and six municipalities have declared July as Smart Irrigation Month.

Colorado, Louisiana and the City and County of Denver made the initial declarations in May. Since that time, nine more states and five more municipalities have joined the list of supporters.

• Mesa County, Colo.
• Idaho
• Indiana
• Carmel, Ind.
• Crown Point, Ind.

"Proclamations for Smart Irrigation Month add credibility to the industry's efforts to promote smart water use to our customers and business partners," says Lowell Kaufhold, chair of the Irrigation Association's Smart Irrigation Month Committee and president of Colorado-based CPS Distributors, Inc. "Encouraging state and local governments to issue official proclamations is also an important grassroots tactic to educate the general public about local water issues."
