Day three of the Farm Journal Midwest Crop Tour got underway this morning, with Brian Grete sharing his initial insights on the Iowa corn crop.

In Iowa crop districts 4 and 5, headed into the state from the east, Grete says the corn crop looks disappointing.

“We’re continuing to see the signs of stress in fields from earlier in the season,” says Grete, Pro Farmer Editor.

He says the southeast corner of Iowa also shows a lot of drought stress, particularly in crop districts 8 and 9. Plus, he adds that Chip Flory’s scouting team out in western Iowa, in crop districts 1, 4 and 7, have seen a lot of corn struggling from dry conditions.

However, in the Quad Cities area, Grete notes, “They’ve had a fairly good season with conditions there, so the crop’s looking pretty decent.”

One caution, Grete emphasizes, is that at the end of the day, he wants farmers to rely on what the Crop Tour data show.

“I’m on just one of 12 routes, so let the data tell the story,” he encourages.

Get Grete’s full overview in the interview Tyne Morgan, U.S. Farm Report Host, conducted with Grete as the tour headed out for the day.
