As corn planting gets further behind, you may need to consider a faster-maturing hybrid. Use this spreadsheet to help decide.
Some factors to consider when making this complex decision are planting conditions, your location, calendar date, hybrid characteristics, field history, overall CRM mix, ability to handle higher moisture corn, and availability of "quality" replacement seed.
In order to help you consider different scenarios, download my Planting Delay Spreadsheet.
Simply enter the following:
- Corn market price
- Estimated yield
- Drying cost per/bushel
- Total acres to analyze
This tool will help you measure the tradeoffs of yield versus drying cost. For example, if a full season hybrid out yields an earlier hybrid, how much extra drying cost can you tolerate?
This spreadsheet is not intended for absolute conclusions; however, this tool provides a platform to calculate the value differences from full to early season hybrids. Simply input your data in the tan colored cells and it will calculate the differences in profit opportunities from full to early season hybrids.
Remember, all variables are based upon "your own" information and assumptions.
