        To understand the McCarty strategy, one must first understand the stakes. On a modern, large dairy, the equipment never stops. The sheer volume of TMR moved and the constant management of manure requires a fleet that consumes thousands of gallons of diesel every week.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For large herds, like McCarty’s, a 50¢ spike in diesel can derail a quarterly budget.         The McCarty strategy is defined by its proactivity. While many producers wait for a good day at the local co-op, McCarty and his team are looking 12 to 18 months into the future. They don’t view fuel procurement as a single transaction but rather as a continuous process of layering.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The process begins with a deep dive into data. Working closely with their fuel seller, they evaluate historical usage patterns. They don’t just look at what they used last year; they account for upcoming changes, whether that’s an expansion in acreage, a shift in equipment efficiency or a change in the beef-on-dairy program that might increase hauling requirements.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Once the known demand is established, the layering begins. As forward months become available on the market, the McCarty team begins to book physical gallons. The goal is to reach approximately 90% coverage by the start of the budget year on Jan. 1.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Mitigation, Not Speculation&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;

Ken McCarty is quick to dispel that notion.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We have never viewed this as a money-making strategy,” he says. “Instead, it is purely a risk mitigation strategy.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For McCarty, the goal isn’t to hit the absolute lowest price of the year — a feat that is more about luck than skill. Instead, the benchmark is historical consistency. If the farm can land in the bottom third or bottom half of the 5- to 10-year historical average or even just maintain consistency year-over-year, the strategy is a success. This consistent-cost model allows the farm to set its milk margins with confidence, knowing that this large input on the farm is already settled.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Hidden Exposures&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Even with 90% of their consumed fuel locked in, McCarty acknowledges the limits of the hedge. The farm remains exposed to indirect fuel costs — the market effects on purchased goods and, perhaps most significantly, milk freight increases.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This distinction is crucial for producers to understand. Locking in the diesel for your own tractors doesn’t protect you from the fuel surcharges applied by the third-party haulers moving your milk or the trucks delivering your distillers grains. This reality reinforces why being aggressive on the fuel you can control is so important; it narrows the window of vulnerability on the variables you cannot control.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Beyond the Contract: Efficiency as a Hedge&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        While forward contracting provides financial protection, McCarty is also focused on the physical side of the equation: consuming less. Every gallon of diesel not burned is a gallon that doesn’t need to be hedged.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The farm is constantly searching for ways to reduce its energy footprint. This includes everything from optimizing feed routes to reduce idling time to investing in newer, more fuel-efficient equipment. In this view, energy efficiency is the ultimate long-term hedge. It is a permanent reduction in exposure that pays dividends regardless of what happens in the energy markets.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We have lived through times like this in the past and have no desire to repeat it, so ultimately, if we can be in the bottom third or bottom half of the 5- to 10-year historical average, or at least consistent year-over-year, then we are satisfied,” McCarty shares. “Of course, we are constantly searching for ways to consume less fuel and energy in general as an additional method of reducing our exposure to energy markets.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Lessons for the 500-Cow Producer&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        While the McCarty scale is vast, the principles are entirely scalable for a modern 500-cow operation. Whether you are milking 40,000 or 500, the great rebalancing of the market means that margins are found in the details.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Compeer Financial ag economist Megan Roberts concurs with McCarty and says hedging isn’t about hitting the top or the bottom of the market; it’s about avoiding the economic risk of doing nothing.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Risk management strategies, including hedging, are less about predicting the market and more about carefully managing exposure, using consistent, incremental decisions to smooth volatility in a way that fits the needs of your dairy operation,” she says. “Every farm is different, but in today’s environment, having a clear plan in place and following it with discipline is a wise strategy.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the end, the McCarty’s approach to fuel is a reflection of its approach to dairy farming as a whole: disciplined, data-driven and focused on the long game. For leaders like James Burgum and Lamar Steiger, coping with stress isn’t just about managing the books, it’s about managing the mindset.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;The Many Hats of the Modern Producer&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        James Burgum, CEO of The Arthur Companies, believes the first step in managing stress is acknowledging the sheer weight of the roles farmers play.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One of the things I did when I stepped into my role is an exercise where I said to our team, ‘Help me understand all the hats on the farm – farmworker, agronomist, grain merchandiser, mechanic, truck driver, snow removal lead, banker, economist,’” Burgum said during a discussion at Top Producer Summit. “You start to go down the list, and its dozens and dozens of roles that an individual farmer plays.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;By recognizing the complexity of these roles, Burgum argues that producers can move toward servant leadership—prioritizing the team’s needs.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There are things that are much more important and much bigger than the challenges we’re wrestling with on the job every day,” Burgum says. “It’s hard to juggle all the balls, but at the end of the day, we want everyone on our team to make sure they get home at night and be there for their families.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Choosing Abundance Over Scarcity&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Lamar Steiger, owner of The 808 Ranch, learned about stress through the lens of his father, a man who seemed to face every possible setback: health crises, financial downturns and missed market peaks.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The farm struggled during times of high interest rates in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s and his father was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, Guillain-Barre, that left him paralyzed for six months.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Still, his dad always had an attitude of abundance, not scarcity, Steiger says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“With my brothers holding other obligations, I was left to milk the cows,” Steiger says. “We were so far behind, and all my dad would say is, ‘It could be worse.’”&lt;br&gt;

As my Dad would say, ‘Well, we never missed a meal.’ That was his bottom line for ‘It’s okay.’”

        When Brent Smith, president and CEO of NewLeaf Symbiotics, joined the company in 2023, the grain market was entering a significant down cycle. While some saw a risky time to lead a startup, he saw an opportunity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I learned in my first startup that the best time to build a business is in hard times,” Smith said said during a discussion at Top Producer Summit. “Because if you can’t withstand tough times, you’re not going to survive long term.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For Smith, survival meant doubling down on the company’s core: science. Despite the pressure to cut costs, NewLeaf continues to spend half of its operating expenses on science.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It would be very easy to peel that back,” he admits. “But we focused on projects that make the most impact the quickest, while keeping an eye on the long-term innovation in our pipeline.”&lt;br&gt;

        Farmers face the ultimate constraint every year: the weather. Scott Beck, president of Beck’s Hybrids, recalls the planting crisis of 2019 when constant rains kept tractors out of the fields well into May.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I was concerned for our customers not being able to plant, but also for us not being able to plant our seed for the next year,” Beck says. “There was nothing that we could do to control the weather, but we could control how we interacted with our customers.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Rather than retreating, the Beck’s team focused on transparency and empathy, using video series to connect with farmers and even forming small groups for prayer and support. Ultimately, they wanted farmers to know they cared and were there to support them however they could.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Despite the financial reality of what could happen if farmers didn’t plant and returned seed, Beck’s decided their course of action would not include employee layoffs. Instead, they prepared to sell land to protect their people.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Fortunately, the weather broke and everybody was able to get planted,” he says. “Then the second miracle happened. We had the second warmest September on record, and that’s what brought the crop through to enable 2019 to not turn out as bad as it started.”&lt;br&gt;

        In 2014, Lamar Steiger, owner of The 808 Ranch, was tasked with a monumental challenge: helping Walmart reinvent its beef supply chain. At the time, the retail giant was at a disadvantage, forced to accept whatever the major meatpackers provided.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Steiger’s strategy was to turn that lack of control into a new kind of independence. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I convinced the Walmart team to go around the traditional supply chain,” Steiger says. Today, Walmart sources 28% of its beef from its own “farm-to-table” supply chain.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;There’s no question that decision was really good for Walmart. But Steiger says it was also really good for him personally.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It reminded me that no matter how big you are, there are always challenges,” he says.&lt;br&gt;

        When the day-to-day tasks of an operation become overwhelming, long-term strategy is often the first thing to go. James Burgum, CEO of The Arthur Companies, believes leaders must intentionally carve out “white space” for their teams.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It’s important to find ways where people can actually spend their time working on the business, not just in the business,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;By protecting time for team members to execute ideas that are three to five years out, Burgum manages the tension between short-term urgency and long-term viability.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It’s hard to step away from the daily fires you’ll face in your operation, but it’s important,” he adds. “How we manage that tension of short term and long term is creating that white space and making sure that we consciously work on the business.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;The Long Game&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Ultimately, resilience in agriculture is about knowing when to push and when to pivot.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You have to know when to put the gas down, and you need to know when to tap the brake,” Smith says. “And regardless of what you are doing, you need to stay focused on what you’re doing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Whether it is investing in science during a downturn or choosing customer empathy over the bottom line, these leaders say constraints don’t have to be roadblocks; they can be the very catalysts that drive an operation forward.

Vicki Janisch sees a canvas and a way to stay rooted in dairy, even after her family stepped away from milking cows.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the last few years, the Wisconsin native has built a one‑of‑a‑kind career as a professional cheese carver. Her work has shown up at weddings, college sports announcements, major dairy events and even tied into the NFL Draft.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But if you ask her, it’s less about the spotlight and more about staying connected to the industry that shaped her.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Day Carving Found Her&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The idea first took shape during a normal day at the office. Janisch was working at Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin when Sarah Kaufmann, a skilled cheese carver from California, stopped in to carve for a project.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Curious about how it all worked, Janisch asked if she could come over and see the process for herself. Watching the carving up close stopped her in her tracks. Seeing the tools, the technique and the transformation from a simple block of cheese into a detailed sculpture lit a spark inside her that she couldn’t quite shake.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I fan girled hard,” Janisch says with a laugh. “I was just in awe of what she could do and what she starts with. I thought, ‘This is the coolest thing ever! You get to carve cheese?’ I mean, cheese already tastes good, but now you get to put your artistic spin on it. That’s sounds like the best job in the world.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Watching Kaufmann work, Janisch began asking all sorts of questions: What tools do you use? What cheese do you use? How do you turn this into a business?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After a steady stream of questions, Kaufmann smiled and offered a simple solution.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“[Sarah] goes, ‘Well, why don’t you come and carve with me tomorrow?’” Janisch recalls. “It was my birthday, and I had already taken the day off. So, I thought, ‘Yeah, why not? I’ll go.’”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The next day, Janisch spent several hours carving alongside Kaufmann and quickly realized how absorbing the craft could be.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You can really lose track of time when you’re doing it,” Janisch says. “It’s such a fun medium to work with, and I loved just getting the chance to try it for myself.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That night, she went home and ordered her own tools.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I didn’t really tell anybody that I was doing it,” Janisch laughs. “I just wanted to carve for fun. I ordered some clay carving tools off Amazon and played around with some cheese I had in the fridge. I had no idea it was going to escalate as quickly as it did.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;A Carving Career Takes Shape &lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        After that first experience, carving became something she kept returning to. Before long, friends and family started to hear about her new hobby. One of those conversations turned into an unexpected opportunity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“A friend of mine came to me and said, ‘Hey, I know you’ve been doing this. Do you want to do my niece’s wedding? Would you be up for making a cheese wedding cake?’” Janisch remembers. “And I’m like, as my first project, this sounds awesome. But I have no idea what I’m doing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After saying yes, she sourced a 40 lb. block of cheddar and some wheels and built a tiered cheese “cake.” The display quickly became a major hit with guests and showed Janisch just how much excitement a carved cheese centerpiece could bring to an event.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;“As things kind of progressed and friends and families started hearing what I did, I started to get more requests,” Janisch says. “It was all through word of mouth, and the list of projects continued to grow.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As more projects came her way, Janisch’s late-night hobby grew into something bigger, and with it came a larger time commitment. After a while, it became clear if Janisch wanted to keep carving, she would need to make some changes.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;A Leap of Faith and an LLC&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        “Two years ago, I made a big leap of faith and decided I needed to change my routine,” Janisch says. “I have two really active kids who I wanted to spend more time with, and I was ready to create a new path for myself.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After some reflection, Janisch left her 9-to-5 job to launch her own business, Janisch Creative, where she works as a creative and digital communications director. That change gave her the flexibility she needed while staying connected to communications, and her cheese carving business became the creative outlet that balanced everything else.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Originally, when she made the big jump, she promised her husband the cheese carving projects would stay small. But now, she jokes her definition of small has changed.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I told him, ‘It won’t get out of hand.’ But I think our perspective of small keeps changing,” she laughs. “But it’s been so fun doing all of this as a family. Having my kids around to see what their mom can do has been pretty cool.”&lt;br&gt;

        Janisch now runs her cheese carving business with a producer’s mindset: Respect the product, respect the people behind it and don’t waste what they’ve made.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“When you think about the craftsmanship that goes into cheese, it’s already so good on its own,” she says. “And then I’m blessed to be able to put my creative spin and artistic stamp on it.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But it also means she has to carefully manage the product to keep the cheese fresh. That started with her first business purchase.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“My first business expense was a refrigerator,” she laughs. “Most Midwesterners have a beer fridge. We have a cheese fridge, and it’s stacked with insane amounts of cheese just waiting to be carved.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While carving the cheese, she also had to figure out what to do with the scraps. It was her firm belief nothing should go to waste.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;“When I’m carving for an event, I’ll box up some of the scraps for people to eat on a charcuterie board or for the company to utilize,” she says. “But if I’m doing a living carving, those scraps can’t be eaten. So, I bring them back home and feed them to my chickens.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Of course, mistakes still happen, and sometimes a piece of the sculpture doesn’t turn out as planned. Luckily, the cheese makes for a tasty medium to work with.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“If I mess up, we eat it,” she laughs. “There is no waste. We just have grilled cheese for a month.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As her carving career continues to grow, Janisch has made a point to stay connected to the local cheese crafters who inspire part of her work.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I’ve made it a really solid goal to work with cheese companies in Wisconsin,” she says. “I worked with over 20 cheese companies last year, and I’ve gotten to form personal relationships with those who are making the cheese.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Those relationships have also helped her learn an important lesson. When it comes to carving, the type of cheese matters just as much as the design.&lt;br&gt;

        Even after years of experience, not every cheese behaves the same. Different textures and inclusions means Janisch has to adjust her approach.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There are some cheeses that are more difficult to work with than others, but I just have to adjust how I handle it,” she says. “The tools I use are different for different cheeses. For some of the flavored cheeses, like pepper jack, where there’s items mixed in, you have to handle things differently.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That’s where her relationships with Wisconsin cheese makers becomes critical. Texture, moisture and aging all influence whether a design holds its shape or begins to crumble.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Cheese makers can make low moisture and aged cheeses. But if they’re aged too long, they don’t work as well for carving,” she explains. “I’ve found my sweet spot is usually a 90-day aged cheddar.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Having conversations with cheese makers allows her to plan each project with the right product from the start.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Because these cheese makers have it so dialed in, we can talk the science behind the cheese that I need. I’m not having to source just a random block of cheddar. I can go and find cheeses that I know are going to hold up for the project.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Fortunately, Janisch has yet to meet a cheese she doesn’t like and is willing to give just about anything a try.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Blue cheese is on my bucket list,” she laughs. “But I don’t think I’m ready to chase after it just yet.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Over time, finding her favorites has become less about a single variety and more about matching the right cheese to the right project. Whatever the choice, she’s thinking about both the carver and the consumer.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        While cheese carving has become a new adventure for Janisch, her connection to the dairy industry runs deep. She grew up on her family’s dairy farm in southern Wisconsin, participating in 4‑H and showing animals at local fairs. That hands‑on experience and dirty‑boot roots instilled in her a natural sense of advocacy and a pride in the industry that now helps her connect with consumers through her cheese carving.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I love having the opportunity to tie it back to the farmers,” she says. “Growing up on a dairy farm, I understand that once you ship milk, it becomes products like cheese. But a lot of times, farmers don’t talk about what happens after that.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For Janisch, that connection between the farm and the finished product is an important part of the story she hopes her work helps tell.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Consumers want to know that they’re supporting dairy farmers, and they do that through the products those farmers help produce. I can talk to consumers about the farmers, the cheese and the cheese makers,” Janisch explains. “It’s one thing to be able to talk about cheese carving, but I’m able to tell more of the dairy story when I go to some of these events.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Her role, as she sees it, is to bridge the gap between the people who make the milk and the people who enjoy the finished product. And even though her family no longer milks cows every day, Janisch says cheese carving keeps her anchored to a larger purpose.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This lets me be part of something bigger than myself,” she says. “When we were dairy farming, it wasn’t just about our farm, it was part of a larger story. Cheese carving helps me stay connected to that.”&lt;br&gt;

        A powerful March blizzard brought parts of Wisconsin to a standstill, blanketing roads, cutting off access, and forcing one dairy farm into an extraordinary decision.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Even as the storm shut down everything around one dairy farmer, it couldn’t stop the work, or the heart, of this farm family in Manawa, Wisconsin.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Whiteout conditions made travel impossible across the region, and for Chris Henschel, a dairy farmer in Manawa, the storm quickly turned from difficult to unprecedented. The March blizzard forced a decision he says he never expected to make.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I would say this is probably one of the worst ones I’ve ever seen,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Snow drifts reached five to fifteen feet high, and roads were impassable for roughly 36 hours. Milk trucks couldn’t get through, and employees couldn’t reach the farm, leaving the Henschel family to run everything on their own.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The wind was huge because anytime you would plow anything, it would drift right back closed. So actually it basically wasn’t safe for drivers to be out… just my family trying to run everything by ourselves,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;With no way to move milk off the farm, the family was forced to make a decision no dairy farmer wants to face.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Yes, we ended up dumping basically almost a day’s worth worth of milk because nobody could get here And have you ever had to dump milk before? We personally have no, we’ve never had, we’ve heard of other farmers having to do it, but we have never had to do,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;

        Even as the milk was lost, the cows were still cared for through the storm. Thanks to robotic milkers, the herd remained on schedule, but the human effort behind the operation became the biggest challenge.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We milked with robots. So we did not have, our cows did not, it was more impact on our, the people, you know, just trying to get to the barn to take care of the cows and get the cows fed, you know, they did get fed a little late yesterday, but yeah, more, more so on the people than the cows. We made sure that cows were taken care of,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While the financial impact remains uncertain, the storm tested the limits of the entire family and revealed just how far they were willing to go.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ten-year-old Jack and six-year-old Elliot joined their parents in braving the blizzard, helping feed the cows and keep the farm running.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Just getting around, getting the cows fed, you know, trying to open things up. So we could get the cows fed and get, you know, everybody taken care of and trying to keep everybody dry and clean. And yeah, that was a big truck, big struggle,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;

        Through the wind, drifting snow, and near-impossible conditions, the family pushed forward—ensuring the cows were fed and cared for even when simply reaching the barn was a challenge.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Dad’s still plowing some snow, but just kind of cleaning some things up, but yeah, everything’s pretty much back to normal,” Henschel says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It was a storm Henschel says was worse than the blizzard of 2018, and one he hopes never to see again. But it also became a powerful reminder of the resilience of farm families—where grit, teamwork, and family come together when it matters most.&lt;br&gt;

      <title>U.S. Bovine Semen Slipped 4% in 2025, Exports Hit Record $327M</title>

        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.naab-css.org/uploads/userfiles/files/2025%20NAAB%20Regular%20Members%20Report%20Year%20End%20Semen%20Sales_FINAL.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB)&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , which represents roughly 95% of the U.S. artificial insemination industry, shows total semen sales slipped about 4% in 2025 to just under 66 million units -
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.dairyherd.com/news/resilient-comeback-u-s-bovine-semen-industry-sees-growth-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt; a decline of 2.9 million compared with 2024,&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         effectively giving back last year’s modest gain. However, the industry offset much of that loss through stronger beef demand, expanded export markets and continued shifts in dairy breeding strategies.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;China Closes Doors, Global Markets Evolve&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        In February 2025, U.S. bovine semen exports to China came to an abrupt standstill after Chinese authorities halted the issuance of required veterinary health certificates, cutting off one of the industry’s key export channels. The disruption stemmed from regulatory and trade tensions, not animal health concerns. Without the certificates, U.S. exporters had to redirect product to other markets.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“While dairy unit exports were down due to the closure of the China market, exports to other countries increased, which significantly reduced the impact of the closure,” says Jay Weiker, president of NAAB.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Even with China offline, robust interest from Europe, Brazil, North Africa and South Asia helped steady the export picture.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The industry not only stabilized but continued to advance by strengthening long-standing markets and opening new ones,” says NAAB international program director Sophie Eaglen.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The closure of China also reshaped the list of top semen buyers by value. In 2025, the United Kingdom led the rankings, followed by Italy and Mexico. Brazil led in total units imported, followed by Mexico and Russia. Overall, 46 markets imported over $1 million in U.S. semen, accounting for 94% of export units and 95% of export value.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;A Down Year for Dairy&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The U.S. dairy semen market experienced a substantial decline in 2025, reflecting ongoing shifts in breeding strategies and global market pressures. Total dairy unit sales, including domestic, export and custom-collected units, fell 6% compared to 2024, a loss of roughly 3 million units, bringing the total to 45.8 million.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Despite the overall decline, domestic use showed a slight rebound, increasing 2% to 16.5 million units, or nearly 367,000 additional units. Sexed semen continued to dominate U.S. herds, rising 6% to 10.6 million units and now accounting for 64% of all dairy semen used domestically. Conventional dairy semen declined by 280,000 units, highlighting the continued 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.dairyherd.com/3-year-bet-navigating-semen-choices-and-herd-dynamics" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;trend toward precision breeding &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        and genomic selection.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Exports for dairy semen totaled 28.3 million units, down about 2.5 million from 2024. The early-year closure of the China market contributed to the drop, but exports to other countries, particularly across Europe, Brazil, North Africa and South Asia, helped offset much of the lost volume. NAAB says strong international demand for replacement heifers continues to create opportunities for U.S. dairy producers.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Beef Semen Sees a Bump&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The beef segment saw modest growth in 2025, reversing a multi-year decline. Total beef semen sales increased by 1%, or roughly 122,000 units, to reach 20.2 million units. Domestic use accounted for most of that growth, with beef units sold into beef herds rising 7% for the second consecutive year. 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.drovers.com/news/education/how-beef-and-dairy-genetics-are-smarter-and-more-profitable" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;In total, 9.8 million beef units were used domestically, with 8.1 million going into dairy herds and 1.7 million used in traditional beef herds.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Heterospermic beef semen, which combines genetics from multiple sires in a single straw, remains a significant portion of the market, though it declined from its 2024 peak of 2.8 million units to just over 2 million in 2025. Domestically, heterospermic units represented 2 million of the total, with 400,000 units exported. Angus remains the dominant beef breed, followed by crossbreeds and heterospermic products.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Export demand for beef genetics also continues to expand. Total beef semen exports grew 13% to 5.5 million units, underscoring the global appetite for U.S. genetics even as total semen unit exports declined overall.&lt;br&gt;

        The last Friday in February was supposed to be a victory lap for a winter well-spent. It was a rare 65°F gift from the Illinois sky. The kind of afternoon where the sun feels like a promise of the spring to come.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;My husband, Scott, and our youngest son, Jacob, spent the afternoon moving cattle between sites. It’s a project that usually takes three or four hours, and as any farmer knows, the cattle rarely cooperate. But Jacob did. He was right there, shoulder-to-shoulder with his dad. Our oldest son, Tyler, was home from college for the weekend, helping on the dairy with cattle work. It was one of those perfect, productive days where everyone was basking in the sunshine, the rhythm of the farm moving in a steady, beautiful cadence.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;When the clock hit 5:00 p.m., Scott was ready to call it a day. Our local high school boys’ basketball team had made it to regionals, and we wanted to be there to cheer them on. We climbed into our SUV, chatting about the chores we’d finished and enjoying the lingering warmth of the day.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;We were only a mile from our farm when the world shattered.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It happened in a blink. A truck made a mad dash across the four-lane highway, blindsiding us. There was no time to swerve, no time to brake. The police report would later confirm what we already knew: there was nothing we could have done.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Everyone tells you that life can change in a split second, but until you are sitting in the wreckage of mangled steel, surrounded by a dozen deployed airbags and the smell of gunpowder and dust, you don’t truly understand it. As we hit, I felt the impact vibrate through my very bones. I immediately started to pray. &lt;i&gt;“We will be okay. God, make us okay.”&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Through the haze of smoke and shock, Scott’s voice was the only thing I could hear. He was a trooper, his own safety forgotten. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Karen, are you okay?” he asked, over and over. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I wanted to scream that I was fine. I wanted to tell him I was right there. But the shock was a physical weight. My mouth opened, a moan escaped, but the words were trapped behind a wall of trauma. I couldn’t speak.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The rest of the evening was a blur of sirens, flashing lights and the sterile white walls of the ER. The ambulance took me away; the tow truck took what was left of our vehicle. We spent the night under fluorescent lights, but we walked away. We got to go home.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the days that followed, a deep, heavy appreciation for life settled over our house. I am thankful to be writing this story, though I would give anything to have never lived it. But the most emotional moment didn’t happen at the crash site; it happened at our farm.&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;Our children asked the question every farm kid fears: “What would happen if both of you had passed?”&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I cried. But for the first time, I could answer them with certainty. I told them about the will. I told them it was all outlined, all documented. It took me losing both of my parents and my brother — and writing about other families’ succession plans gone wrong for years — before we finally sat down and finalized our own a decade ago.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I think back to my own parents. It took them losing their own son — my brother — in an automobile accident to finally lean forward and be brave enough to talk about their own will. They put a plan together soon after and revised it a few times over the years. When the time came that we eventually lost our parents, my sisters and I were so incredibly thankful we did not have to worry about the logistics during our grief. My parents had it all documented. They gave us that peace of mind.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Farmers, I am pleading with you: Don’t push pause.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Don’t wait for a sunny day to have the conversation. Or a rain day. The highway doesn’t care about your schedule. Don’t wait because it’s an uncomfortable conversation; it will never get easier. Don’t wait because you aren’t sure what is “fair” or what is “best.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Start the conversation today. Meet with a lawyer. Get it documented. You can always change and revise it — we already have once since we started.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;I am so incredibly thankful that today, my kids are out in the dirt helping on the farm instead of sitting in a lawyer’s office reading a will. I am thankful they didn’t lose their parents on an Illinois highway. But mostly, I am thankful that if the worst had happened, they wouldn’t have been left in the dark.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Don’t wait. Your legacy is too important to leave to chance.&lt;/b&gt;
