The Grain Weevil Robot Takes On One Of Farming's Most Dangerous Jobs

From the depths of a grain bin, a robot is doing the dangerous work once performed by farmers. As it scurries across the grain, the

breaks up hardened surface crust and ridges, leveling out the grain and improving airflow. From outside the bin, the farmer can now remotely control the robot as it completes the once-dangerous task.

“Cleaning out grain bins and leveling grain is by far the most dangerous thing we do, so to be able to stay physically out of the grain as much as we can, that’s a huge improvement in safety,” says Zach Hunnicutt, a farmer from Giltner, Neb.

The History of the Grain Weevil

, started working on a project to teach kids workforce skills through innovation, such as building robots. When a local farmer saw what the duo had created, he asked if they could build a robot that would keep him out of the grain bin.

From there, the father-son duo made a 3-D printed robot, complete with duct tape, and showed it to a group of farmers gathered to watch the “Silo” movie. The Johnsons took that feedback home, and in 2021, they officially started working on their Grain Weevil business.

“We knew that’s when we were going to be able to turn this little project into a startup, and now into a company that has over 100 robots deployed,” Chad says.

After five years in business, they’ve sold more than 100 Grain Weevil robots – each with the goal of making it safer for farmers when working with grain in storage. Along the way, they’ve had the support of

for marketing, testing and getting the product to market.

“We built this robot to help keep farmers and workers out of the grain when there’s a situation where they could get hurt, entrapped or any of the dangers that go along with it,” Chad explains.

How Technology Can Involve the Next Generation

While the Johnsons have been working together in the garage since Ben was a child, seeing their partnership expand into a company has been surreal.

“It’s great, we get along very well … you couldn’t ask for any better situation than to be able to build robots with your kid,” Chad says.

Now, the Johnsons’ invention has opened doors for more parents and their children to work alongside one another. Hunnicutt is a fifth-generation farmer growing corn, popcorn and soybeans. He says it’s a challenge to include young children when working with grain because of the risks.

However, with the Grain Weevil, the robot is controlled from outside the grain bin, away from the danger.

“Without having to physically enter the grain is a pretty neat thing to be able to do, still keeping them working, but not putting them in danger,” Hunnicutt says.

Hunnicutt draws comparisons between operating the Grain Weevil and

Grain Dust Explosions Declined in 2025, but Fatalities and Injuries Saw a Sharp Increase

According to Purdue University’s nationwide report, there’s a concerning trend where the total number of grain dust explosions decreased in 2025, but the severity of those incidents—measured by injuries and fatalities—increased significantly.

There were seven grain dust explosions reported in the U.S. in 2025, a slight decrease from the nine reported in 2024.

However, despite fewer incidents, the human toll was higher. The 2025 explosions resulted in four fatalities and 10 injuries, compared to zero fatalities and two injuries in 2024.

Facility Types: The incidents occurred across a variety of operations, including:

Two grain elevators

One farm-operated grain elevator

One seed processing facility

One feed mill

One flour mill

One biofuel plant

The explosions were concentrated in the Midwest and South, with Texas and Ohio reporting two incidents each, and Minnesota, North Dakota, and Nebraska each reporting one.

Grain dust was the most common fuel source noted from incidents in 2025 having caused five explosions. The primary ignition sources identified also included smoldering grain, equipment maintenance work, and overheated bearings.

As such Purdue’s Kingsly Ambrose emphasizes the critical need for:

Minimizing dust accumulation to prevent secondary explosions

Performing preventive maintenance on equipment (especially bearings) before peak handling

Properly aerating stored grain to prevent smoldering, which can act as an ignition source

The Purdue group has been collecting data related to grain dust explosions in the U.S. since 2012, and the initiative is supported by the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA).

Now Could Be A ‘Powerful Time’ to Buy Late-Model Used Machinery

For many farmers, the current machinery market feels anything but stable. Yet according to Cory Nordhausen, vice president of sales for the western U.S. with AgDirect, this moment could actually provide a good opportunity for thoughtful buyers.

“I kind of feel like maybe we’ve reached a reset or a moment of stability in the equipment market,” he says.

Nordhausen isn’t suggesting that prices are low or that buying decisions are easy. Instead, he believes that the relationship between new and used equipment values, combined with evolving inventory levels, has created a window where strategic, well‑planned purchases could make sense.

From Shortage to the “Great Reset”

To understand where we are, Nordhausen says you have to look back at the challenges that started in 2020. It was an era defined by choked supply chains and empty dealer lots.

“Equipment was flying off the shelves. Dealership inventories became depleted, and just the lack of supply was there… you were still waiting on farm equipment for six, 12, 18 months in 2022,” he recalls.

As demand began to cool through 2023 and 2024, inventory began to build. However, Nordhausen believes the market has hit an equilibrium, particularly in the used segment. While it might feel like there is a surplus, the data tells a more nuanced story about high-quality, late-model iron.

“Stability is probably looking at just the value of used farm equipment in relationship to the price of new farm equipment,” Nordhausen explains. “What’s happened is a lot of that good one-to-three-year-old equipment that’s been in the auction space for the last couple of years, that’s come down significantly. I suppose you can look at planters, combines, tractors, and sprayers and say that there’s probably 40% less of that stuff in the auction space today.”

Are Prices Reaching A Bottom?

If the auction blocks are seeing 40% less late-model inventory, it suggests the “oversupply” phase is tightening. For farmers who have been waiting for used prices to bottom out, Nordhausen suggests that is in the process of happening now.

“We probably won’t see, unless something crazy happens, the price of used equipment going down much more,” he says. “Some of that good late-model, one-to-three-year-old equipment is starting to bring a little bit more money than it has. That’s simply due to supply and demand.”

Looking further down the road, the lack of new equipment sales in 2024 and 2025 has potentially created a “pipeline problem” for the future. If fewer new machines are sold today, he believes there could be a shortage of high-quality used machines two or three years from now.

Consider Labor Needs And Repair Costs

In this tight-margin environment, Nordhausen’s advice to farmers is to be thoughtful and strategic, as they focus on the big four items: tractors, combines, planters and sprayers. In the process of weighing whether now is the time to upgrade, he also encourages farmers to evaluate their labor needs and the cost of repairs.

“You have to look at, what piece of equipment are you going to buy that is going to bring the most efficiency to your farm? What’s going to save you the most time? What’s going to help you when you can’t get as much labor on your farm to run that equipment?” he asks.

Furthermore, he believes the “run it until it breaks” philosophy has some downsides.

“Repair bills are not going down. The price of parts is up. Shop rates in dealerships continue to increase year over year,” Nordhausen says. “One really has to find that balance of ‘how much money am I going to stick into that used piece of equipment on my farm’ versus when’s the time right to trade it.”

Financing as a Strategic Purchasing Lever

When margins are compressed, liquidity is king. It’s why Nordhausen says he views financing not just as a way to pay for a machine, but as a way to protect a farm’s balance sheet.

“You can amortize those payments out… and save some of that liquidity off your balance sheet so you can go use that in other places,” he says.

While the standard industry structure remains a five-year term with 20% down, Nordhausen would also encourage farmers to evaluate leasing.

“On the lease you have a large balloon on the end—we refer to it as a residual—and that lowers each annual payment... really allowing you to get that cost per hour, cost per acre down,” he says.

He acknowledges there is a trade-off, however: “There is a little bit of a penalty to pay, because you pay a little more interest because you’re carrying more principal. But if you’re purely looking at cash flow, that’s a very strategic way to get the payments lower.”

Weigh The Various Options With A Sharp Pencil

Nordhausen encourages farmers evaluate buying opportunities carefully, specifically when it comes to low-interest or 0% incentives.

“I think you’ve got to do the math, right? Just because you see 0% interest, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting the best deal,” he cautions. “There’s probably a cost to you on the other side of it baked into the price.”

To counter this, he suggests farmers use tools like the AgDirect mobile app to calculate the “true cost” of buying down a rate. Armed with the math, he believes a farmer can have more negotiating power at the dealership.

“If you’re more interested in just a low cash price, you can offset that, saying, ‘I don’t need 0% interest. What’s your best cash money deal?’”

Another consideration – as dealerships become more cautious about taking in trades to manage their own inventories, more of the action is moving to auction platforms and private-party sales. Nordhausen notes that AgDirect has seen “huge momentum” in these channels over the last decade.

Looking Ahead: Plan Now for Tomorrow’s Needs

Nordhausen believes farmers should be thinking two to three years out about their equipment needs.

With fewer new units being sold now and late‑model used inventories tightening, he sees a real possibility of higher used prices if commodity markets would strengthen. “With the lack of used inventory that we built in ‘23, ‘24 and ‘25, there might be a higher demand. And what happens with demand—prices go up.”

His central message to farmers: use this “reset” period to upgrade strategically, align purchases with both efficiency gains and cash‑flow realities, and above all, he adds, do the math before you sign.

Weekly Grain Market Summary

Tuesday’s WASDE estimates at the bottom of this page

Market Overview

Grain markets experienced choppy trading throughout the week before finishing uniformly lower on Friday. March corn futures closed down 2½ cents at 444¾, losing 3 cents for the week. January soybeans dropped 14¼ cents to settle at 1105¼, marking a 32½ cent weekly decline—the first weekly loss in eight weeks. March Chicago wheat fell 4½ cents to 535¾, down 2¾ cents on the week.

SOYBEANS

U.S. Market Developments: U.S.-China trade relations showed significant improvement over the last several weeks. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer indicated trade relations with China have stabilized, though he emphasized the need for more balanced, smaller-scale trade focused on non-sensitive goods.

South American Production: Brazil’s soybean planting for 2025/26 reached 89% of expected area as of late November, up 8 percentage points from the previous week but lagging last year’s 91%. Irregular rainfall continues to impact key producing states including Mato Grosso, Goias, Maranhao, and Piaui, while Rio Grande do Sul faces declining moisture after early-season excess.

StoneX cut Brazil’s 2025/26 soybean production forecast by 0.9% to 177.2 million metric tons, citing productivity reductions in Mato Grosso and Goias despite modest area expansion. Despite the revision, the forecast still points to a record crop. Brazilian exporter 3tentos expects soybean origination to grow from 4.11 million tons in 2025 to 4.8 million tons in 2026.

Anec maintained its projection for record Brazilian soybean exports of 110 million tons in 2025, up from 97.3 million tons last year, driven primarily by Chinese demand.

Chinese Demand: The USDA’s Beijing post forecasts China’s 2025/26 soybean imports at 106 million metric tons, down 1 million tons year-over-year as Beijing continues limiting import growth. The projection reflects restrained crushing demand growth of 2% and government efforts to control imports. China’s domestic production is forecast at 19.9 million metric tons.

Read the full report with our WASDE estimates here:

Grain Market Summary

        November 25, 2025

Corn

Closing Prices: March corn futures gained 1 1/2 of a cent today, settling at 438 1/4. Today’s range was contained within the prior days range and came in at just 2 3/4 cents. The 14-day average true range has dropped below 6 cents. We expect the quiet trade to persist through the Holiday week. Support and resistance levels remain intact from this morning’s Grain Express report.

Production & Supply: The U.S. corn harvest is virtually complete at 96%, producing what’s estimated to be the biggest crop in U.S. history. This record production has added to already ample global supplies.

Export Activity: Brazil’s corn exports are projected at 6.11 million metric tons for November, down slightly from 6.36 million tons the previous week. South Korea’s major feedmill group purchased approximately 68,000 metric tons of U.S. corn in a private deal, priced at $249.78 per ton outright or at a 197-cent premium over Chicago March 2026 futures. The corn will ship from the Pacific Northwest between January 1-31, 2026.

For example, the ability to withstand losses or to adhere to a particular trading program in spite of trading losses are material points which can also adversely affect actual trading results. There are numerous other factors related to the markets in general or to the implementation of any specific trading program which cannot be fully accounted for in the preparation of hypothetical performance results and all of which can adversely affect actual trading results.

Weekly Grain Market Recap

        SOYBEANS

Soybeans experienced significant volatility this week, driven primarily by renewed Chinese buying activity. Prices rallied early in the week on growing optimism around Chinese purchases following the trade war truce, with futures climbing nearly 3% on Monday to a 17-month high. The optimism was backed by concrete action as China’s state-owned COFCO purchased at least 840,000 metric tons for December and January shipment—China’s largest U.S. soybean purchase since January.
The USDA confirmed multiple flash sales throughout the week totaling over 1.5 million metric tons to China for 2025/26 delivery. However, markets gave back gains mid-week as “Buy the rumor, sell the news” took hold and as traders viewed prices as “overbought”. Despite the renewed optimism some doubt remains as China is far from the White House’s stated target of 12 million tons for the year. For the week January futures were 1/2 of a cent higher.
On the supply side, U.S. soybean crush hit a record 227.6 million bushels in October, beating all trade estimates and demonstrating robust domestic demand from expanding biofuel processing capacity. Weekly export inspections totaled 1.18 million metric tons, running above the previous week but well behind last year’s pace, with marketing year-to-date exports at 10.1 million tons versus 17.6 million last year.
Internationally, Brazil’s 2025/26 planting reached 71% complete, lagging last year’s 80% pace due to irregular rainfall. Safras & Mercado lowered its Brazilian crop forecast to 178.8 million tons from 180.9 million tons, though this still represents a 4% increase from the previous season. Argentina faces more serious challenges, with severe flooding in Buenos Aires province leaving 1.5 million hectares at high risk of remaining unproductive. Planting sits at just 24.6% complete—12.9% behind the five-year average—and approximately 70% of local farmland is either underwater or suffering from excess moisture……

Read the entire write up covering Corn, Wheat, Soybeans and Cattle here:

Multi-State Grain Merchandiser Files for Bankruptcy: What Farmers Should Know

Hansen-Mueller Co. is a nationwide grain merchandiser and processor with nine elevators across five states. It also operates port terminals in Minnesota, Texas, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Earlier this week, the Omaha-Nebraska based company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

In October, it was reported more than three dozen Nebraska farmers were owed a total of $2 million. At that time, Hansen-Mueller’s grain dealer license was suspended by the Nebraska Public Service Commission. After paying farmers $2.1 million, the Commission reinstated the company’s license on Nov. 4 and did not issue any civil penalties. The bankruptcy filing came two weeks later.

“After careful consideration of all available strategic alternatives, the Board of Directors determined that a Court-supervised process is the most effective and efficient way to achieve an orderly sale of our assets,” said Josh Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of Hansen-Mueller Co. in the company press release. “We believe this path will maximize the value of the Company’s assets for the benefit of our creditors, employees, and all stakeholders.”

the list of 20 largest creditors includes several grain commodity companies, coops, etc from Louisiana, Mississippi, Kansas, Arkansas, Nebraska and more. The company says it has assets ranging from $100 million to $500 million with estimated liabilities in the same range.

Minnesota and Texas are also investigating the company not paying farmers.

State departments of ag are issuing advisories to farmers who have conducted business with Hansen-Mueller to file any claims as soon as possible. Each state has a unique set of provisions in the individual state statutes, so it’s important to know what your state’s may or may not provide.

In addition, hypothetical trading does not involve financial risk, and no hypothetical trading record can completely account for the impact of financial risk in actual trading.
