      <title>From Forage to Fertilizer: Iowa Farmers Turn Cover Crops Into A Profit Engine</title>

        Where the borders of Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois converge above the Mississippi River, Jack and Maria Smith, alongside their sons Nick and Ted, have turned cover crops into the strategic backbone of their diversified farming operation.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Based in eastern Dubuque County, Iowa, the family combines no-till corn and soybeans with a 420-head beef operation. They utilize a spring and fall calving schedule to produce registered seedstock and yearling bulls, while also finishing select calves.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One of the things that makes their farm unique, Nick Smith says, is how completely they’ve integrated cover crops in all aspects of their operation.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We cover crop every single acre now. We’ve been able to do that for the last five, six, seven years, somewhere in there,” he told Andrew McCrea, during their recent discussion on Farming The Countryside.&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Matching Cover Crops To Cattle And Terrain&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Because their land is prone to erosion, the Smiths first used cover crops to protect the soil from heavy rains. However, the practice quickly became a “no-brainer” feed source for their beef herd.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;On their steepest slopes, the family often uses a two-year rotation centered on covers. They plant a spring cover crop to graze or harvest, then follow it with a diverse “summer cocktail” that is harvested once and grazed in the fall. This rotation prepares the fields for no-till corn the following year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“With some of our steepest slopes, that’s what we typically do,” Smith says. “On ground that’s not as steep, we grow more continuous corn.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Most of the family’s cover crop acres are grazed by cattle at some point.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“In the fall, I would say we’re grazing all of them,” Smith says. He notes that distance and accessibility sometimes limit spring grazing. “Probably 50-plus percent of the acres do get grazed in the spring. It just depends on the weather. You can’t really have the cattle out there if it’s wet.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Custom “Cocktails” For Summer And Fall&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Smith chooses different cover crop mixes based on the season and the next crop in the rotation. For summer covers, he prefers diverse blends based on sorghum-sudangrass.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We love that stuff,” he says. “It’s really hard to screw it up. It’ll grow pretty much anywhere, and it grows quickly. It’s great feed; cows love it.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He typically adds legumes like clover and buckwheat to those summer mixes. For fall and winter grazing, the farm relies on small grains and brassicas, including triticale, cereal rye, turnips, and oats. These fall covers are usually seeded in August and September.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;Smith adjusts his seeding rates based on the upcoming row crop. If a field is headed to soybeans, he seeds cereal rye at a heavier rate.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Beans like cereal rye,” he said. “If we’ve got a thicker stand out there, that’s not going to bother me.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If he is planting corn the next year, he uses a lighter rate of cereal rye, especially on fields that won’t be grazed in the spring. The family has also experimented with camelina ahead of corn to add more diversity.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;From Planes To Drones — And The Combine&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Smith’s father, Jack, began aerial seeding cover crops more than 15 years ago, but the rolling terrain made it difficult to get consistent results.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“In our topography, we haven’t had great success with that,” Smith says. “It’s hard to get good coverage over every acre.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In recent years, the Smiths have used drones for more precise seeding, especially to drop oats, radishes, or turnips into standing corn to create high-quality fall forage.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We’ve had years where we’ve had knee-high oats while we’re harvesting corn,” Smith says, though he notes success depends on timely rain.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One of the most significant changes the family made was five years ago when they decided to mount a Gandy air seeder on their combine to plant cereal rye during the corn harvest.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It’s hydraulically powered and blows the seed so it drops right at or through the header, just before the residue goes through the snapping rolls on the corn head,” Smith says. “As that material goes down through the corn head, it basically covers the seed up and helps trap a little bit more moisture there for it to get going.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Smith can seed about 15 acres per fill. He dismisses concerns that the practice slows down the harvest.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Everybody’s excuse is, ‘I don’t want to stop harvest,’” he says. “You can refill in 5 minutes with the right kind of tender. We’re saving a whole other trip, saving a lot of fuel, and we’re getting more growth because it’s done earlier.”&lt;br&gt;

        Smith credits no-till and consistent cover cropping with improving his soil function. He has observed faster residue breakdown, more earthworm activity, and higher microbial activity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        “The pace of the increases in organic matter have gone up a lot since we started using the combine, because we’re getting seed in every square foot of every acre, and we’re doing it on a consistent basis,” he reports.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Grazing cover crops has also allowed the family to reduce commercial nitrogen rates over the last six or seven years, even as corn yields have increased.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“From an efficiency standpoint, we’re way more efficient as far as pounds of commercial nitrogen applied per bushel of corn,” Smith says. He attributes this to cattle returning nutrients to the soil via manure, though the exact fertilizer value is hard to quantify.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) has played a central role in helping the Smiths refine these systems. Nick says he uses the organization’s website, events, and on-farm trials to guide experimentation with new cover mixes.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Labor And The “Cheat Code” Of Cows&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Smith says labor is the biggest barrier for most farmers considering cover crops. However, he argues that seeding during harvest removes that hurdle.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“That’s where the combine’s a no-brainer, because that’s not labor — you’re saving time,” he notes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;He also acknowledges that having cattle makes the financial risk much lower.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Compared to other farmers, we’ve got a mulligan, if something doesn’t work,” Smith says. “If you’re a cash-grain farmer only and you’re spending money on some cover crops and it doesn’t really work, it’s hard to stomach that cost. For us, if we have something that’s a failure, we can still recover some of that cost — and in a lot of years, way more than recover the cost.          was intended to change.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Developed by The Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC) and its partners (The Nature Conservancy, Houston Engineering and OpenTeam), the Conservation Connector is an online directory that allows users to easily view and sort through the programs relevant to them in one place.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There’s a huge growth in the number of program offerings out there to help farmers put conservation practices to work on the ground. It’s a little bit confusing for folks, because people don’t necessarily have any single place where they can go to find out what’s really available to them - other than just a generic Google search,” says Dave Gustafson, CTIC conservation connector project director. “The Connector is intended to be a very quick and easy-to-use tool right now that focuses on farmers to find all the programs and providers that are relevant for their location, for their commodities of interest, and for the practices and incentive types that are of interest to them.”&lt;br&gt;

Gustafson says the programs on the platform have been preloaded by CTIC staff, but there are plans to shift that in the future toward a self-registry process.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We did our best to get very accurate information, and in many cases, the data resulted from a one-on-one interview between our intern and the program administrator. However, our process going forward is to request that all of those program administrators and service providers do regular quarterly updates to their information.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;And while the majority of programs currently on the platform are located in the upper Midwest, each U.S. state is represented - as well as Puerto Rico. That list will be expanding in the months ahead to also include more livestock offerings. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We have been in conversation with a number of different partners, such as dairy and other commodity groups, to help make sure our directories are as accurate as possible,” Gustafson says. “The kinds of different conservation offerings that will be available in the connector will broaden significantly over time.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The team plans to officially launch the farmer-facing side of The Connector sometime toward the end of August.       <title>Colorado Rancher Leverages USDA Grant Money to Steward Public Land</title>

        On Gayel Alexander’s Colorado ranch, the cow-to-land ratio is enough to leave many scratching their heads.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Every year, she grazes 200-head of beef cows on 40,000 acres of public land that sits on the rugged landscape shared by national monuments and culturally significant mountaintops.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The fact that her cows are scattered across the landscape like needles in a giant haystack of land doesn’t bother Alexander. She knows this land.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In 1936 and 1942, through the Taylor Grazing Act, Alexander’s grandfather was able to secure two land leases.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Even though he only had an eighth-grade education, my grandfather was a very smart man,” she said.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Now, these separate leases, managed first by her grandfather, then later by her mother and now by Alexander, combined with adjoining private property, make up the Ja Quidi Ranch. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Layered with generational land knowledge, Alexander also knows her cattle. She spends time on the land with them, learning their habits and tracking their grazing patterns.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But Alexander’s knowledge doesn’t necessarily equal control.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I have range cows, not pasture cows,” she says. “They are very agile, very smart and they are used to doing what they want to do to survive on their own.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One challenge with range cows is that Alexander is sometimes chasing her herd away from boundaries and shooing them from neighbors’ cropland and hay barns. On a broader scale, this rangeland free-for-all limits her ability to take full advantage of the rotational grazing plans she develops with federal range conservationists from The Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. This data-tracking hurdle impacts her management decisions, which, in turn, affects overall profitability and environmental stewardship.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        
    
        That’s where the 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.usda.gov/climate-solutions/climate-smart-commodities" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , USDA’s historic funding package for conservation agriculture comes into play for Alexander. The $3.1 billion investment is broken up into 141 public-private grants aimed at providing both technical and financial support for farmers and ranchers to begin, grow or enhance their conservation journey and connect the data associated with it to both operational success and the climate-smart economy.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One of those grants, 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.trustinfood.com/climate-smart-commodities/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Farm Journal’s Connected Ag Project&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , was the missing piece Alexander needed to connect her practical ranch needs and her dreams of holistic land management to reality.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We have gathered a coalition of industry and conservation leaders, put the power of their technical expertise alongside $40 million in federal grant dollars and brought all of that to bear for the American farmer,” says Jimmy Emmons, senior vice president for climate-smart programs for 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="http://www.trustinfood.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Trust In Food&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , Farm Journal’s sustainable ag group. “Through this project, 500 growers and producers like Gayel will have a true partner in connecting their conservation goals to success both for themselves and for agriculture’s sustainable future.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Each producer enrolled in the project receives:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;technical conservation planning&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;agronomic support&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;data tools&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;coaching for how to maximize data efficacy&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;financial support to implement climate-smart practices or technology&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Andrew Lyon, director of technical assistance for the project, is tasked with assessing the needs of farmers in the program and matching them with partners that can provide both solutions and expertise. As the first producer to implement a conservation program under the grant, Alexander will be using both technology and data-coaching partners to accomplish her conservation goals. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Virtual fencing and data coaching have been important tools to meet both the current challenges that Gayel has on her public land leases and the aspirational goals that she has for better land overall stewardship through increased rotational grazing,” Lyon says. “Through this program, producers like Gayel will have the information and tools they need to set them up for a future of conservation-minded decision-making on their operations.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Alexander says she never would have been able to address her challenges and meet those goals on her own – which is the main factor that led 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Merck Animal Health&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         to sign onto the grant project with their 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/species/cattle/vence" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Vence&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         virtual fencing technology.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        
    
        Other private partners for the program, including Ducks Unlimited, PTx Trimble, AgriWebb, U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef, Texas Agricultural Land Trust, ABS Global and Tuskegee University, among others, combine to provide both resources and technical assistance to put practical conservation on the ground throughout the U.S.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The grant partnership is important to Merck Animal Health because it helps reduce barriers and encourages ranchers to adopt innovative tools, like Vence, to implement strategies to produce beef while reducing their environmental impact,” said Gary Tiller, Commercial Director, Vence Corp., part of Merck Animal Health. “Through our partnership, Merck Animal Health can contribute to sustainability efforts important to the industry.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Recently, the Connected Ag Project team outfitted Ja Quidi Ranch with technology that is already providing tangible benefit.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Alexander’s cattle have been outfitted with Vence virtual collars, which are allowing her to collect data that she has been “chomping at the bit” to have. She says the data will allow her to make adaptive changes during the growing seasons and better care for the health and wellbeing of her herd.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That level of control could help her increase the size of her herd in the future.          will provide both the technology and support needed to help get Alexander to that point with their all-in-one livestock management software.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Those focused on improving their livestock’s efficiency or reducing their fertilizer usage will work with Trust in Food’s technical assistance team, as well as AgriWebb’s customer success team, to ensure the right records are tracked and assessed to support producers on their climate-smart journey,” says Coby Buck, a fifth-generation rancher and director of strategic accounts at AgriWebb.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Alexander believes that the benefits will grow exponentially for her ranch.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I have feed on both my permits that isn’t getting used right now,” she says. “I normally have four allotments, but when we wrote my summer plan, we tripled it to 12 allotments.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Now I can do a lot more intensive rotational grazing which will increase forage and help bring back grasses that have been dormant for years because they haven’t had hoof and cow activity,” Alexander continues.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Range management practices will be beneficial for wildlife and allow Alexander to increase riparian areas that will revive springs and ponds for healthier habitats.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Some of this land just isn’t healthy anymore, and this will help it come back alive,” she added.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Gazing out over the rugged, rocky landscape Alexander thinks of as her own, you’ll see areas that are part of the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and, just south, the Ute Mountain, a culturally significant landmark for the Ute Nation of Indians.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Alexander is aware of the weight she bears as steward of this land. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Every time I can better my permits, I’m bettering everything,” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

      <title>G Bar C Ranch Takes Texas Ranchers Behind the Farm Gate</title>

        Texas ranchers are battling right now - and if it’s not entirely a battle for their lives, it’s at least a fight for their livelihoods.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;From changing weather, natural disasters and encroaching land development, ranchers are facing mounting pressures and for Chad Ellis, CEO of 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.txaglandtrust.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;&lt;b&gt;Texas Agricultural Land Trust,&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         it all adds up to a grim picture for the future of the state’s working lands.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We have 1,400 people moving to our state every day – that’s half a million people a year,” he said. “We are losing over a section of working lands per day, which amounts to 300,000 acres a year that is lost.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Right now, we are asking ourselves ‘how do we come together, how do we stay in business and how can we be economically sustainable so that we can hand our legacy and our heritage to the next generation.’”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;At the nexus of those challenges, Ellis says, is &lt;b&gt;
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.gbarcranch.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;G Bar C Ranch&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
