What Ag Equipment Parts Are In the Shortest Supply Right Now?

The National Farm Machinery Show (NFMS) earlier this month revealed one major theme: the supply chain is still posing major problems for ag equipment manufacturers. Leaders within the ag equipment sector say the supply chain issues have been a major hurdle in bringing some new equipment to market, and the issue could persist throughout 2023.

“The supply chain challenges that we experienced in 2021 and 2022 are with us for a little bit longer,” says Curt Blades, senior vice president of agriculture services for the

        Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)

        .

From Case IH to Deere and Company, the equipment manufacturers admit issues sourcing parts has been a constant headache.

“Absolutely, it’s been an issue. Supply chains have been highly disruptive in the last 12, 18 to 24 months,” says Jahmy Hindman,

        Deere and Company

         chief technology officer (CTO).

Hindman says in the constant conversations Deere is having with their supply chain base, suppliers are telling them the situation looks to improve the second half of the year.

“It’s progressively getting better,” Hindman adds. “Our third quarter and fourth quarter of last year showed us the improvement in our ability to deliver the products that are being ordered to the marketplace. I expect that to continue in the first quarter of this fiscal year for us.”

AEM also sees improvement coming later this year, which means farmers could still face months of supply chain constraints.

“Maybe by the end of the year, we’ll begin to see some return to normalcy, whatever normalcy looks like,” says Blades.

Parts in Shortest Supply

Today, equipment manufacturers across the world are grappling with the same problem. The supply chain issues are not only ongoing, but hard to predict.

“We had this level of challenge, maybe now it’s a little bit less, but we’re not out of the woods,” says Kurt Coffey, head of

        Case IH for North America

. “It could be tracks one day, it could be tires the next day. We have a lot of very unique, high-value, custom castings, a heat-treated custom casting, that you can’t just go get, and it’s a very unique supplier.”

Castings are the latest supply chain headwind to hit. No matter the type of equipment, manufacturers are saying castings are a major hurdle right now.

“It’s a little bit of a whack-a-mole strategy when it comes to the supply chain,” says James Shurts, president of the ag division for

        Great Plains

. “It’s always something new, and it just happens to be that castings are our current issue and the current challenges. But it’s always something different.”

AEM recently conducted a survey of its members, showing:

The most sought-after component are tracks (and their included components):

Only 27% of optimal inventory is available.

In both agriculture and construction sectors, semiconductors and chips are in short supply.

44% optimal inventory is available across both sectors.

“The other things that are interesting are like wiring harnesses, which oftentimes are made in the Ukraine, or seat cushions, which are made in Texas in areas that were destroyed by floods. It’s not one thing, it’s a collection of things,” says Blades.

Case IH says as the parts in short supply continue to vary, the company is finding unconventional ways to address the issues.

“The last year or two has been custom castings, chips, tracks, tires,” says Coffey. “We actually pulled strategic sourcing in and went on third-party markets to go buy chips from third parties, millions of dollars of chips from a third party, bring them in, ship them to our partner suppliers so we can keep our lines going.”

The Biggest Issue? Labor

No matter what item is in scarce supply, the problem is bigger than one part or company.

“The underlying issue with all supply chain challenges are labor,” says Blades.

AEM also surveyed 179 equipment manufacturer executives about the supply chain late last year and found:

98% still face supply chain issues.

58% are experiencing continuously worsening supply-chain conditions.

The AEM survey showed equipment manufacturers of all size are getting creative to address the challenges, which includes increasing their inventory and supplier base, creating a more vertical integration of supply chains, certifying alternative suppliers, as well as focusing more on supply chain reliability than price.

Growing Optimism

Despite the constant supply chain obstacles, leaders at both John Deere and Case IH are optimistic.

“We’re not just hearing that it’s progressively getting better, we’re sensing it; we’re feeling it,” says Hindman. “We’re also seeing it come through in our delivery. So, as long as things continue on that trajectory, I feel pretty good about next year.”

“We’re not out of the woods, but we’re certainly in a better place than where we were, let’s say, a year, year and a half ago,” adds Coffey. “But we’re just going to keep fighting to make sure that we’re ready for whatever the customers need from us.”

Optimism is growing in the supply chain, even with some bumps still ahead, as agricultural equipment manufacturers continue to navigate uncharted waters with the supply chain.

Related Story:

Machinery Pete Reveals the Strongest Drivers of These Record Used Equipment Values Right Now

Strong used equipment values have been a theme for the past 18 to 20 months, and

        Machinery Pete

doesn’t see that story changing anytime soon. There were expectations prices would soften to start 2023, but that hasn’t been in the case. However, if you’re searching for a bargain, during

        National Farm Machinery Show

last week Machinery Pete revealed two areas farmers may want to watch.

Greg Peterson,

         also known as

        Machinery Pete

, says prices of used four-wheel-drive tractors have been on fire as farmers are paying premiums prices for slightly older pre-DEF, pre-Tier IV four-wheel-drive models that are still in nice condition.

So, just how dynamic is the used equipment today? Machinery Pete says he’s running out of adjectives to describe it.

“As hot as it was a year ago, which was the hottest I’ve ever seen by a huge factor, amazingly, through the end of ‘22, the used values kept going up across the board,” says Machinery Pete. “When the calendar flipped, there were a lot of people thinking it can’t go any higher because now we’re taking out the urine taxpayers November December, but used values have got nothing but up since January.”

Another Key Indicator of Used Market Strength

He says the biggest driver of values continues to be availability, along with the right piece of used equipment on the market, even if it has high hours. Now, there’s another indicator of the market strength.

“We’re seeing auction pricing, strong pricing out of the deep South,” says Machinery Pete. “And over my 33 years, that’s always been a sure sign that you know that’s a hot market when used values there are exploding and higher in value.”

What to Watch for the Best Bargains

So, where are the bargains? Well, they may not be huge bargains, but there are a couple areas showing the best value for those in the market to buy.

“The only two spots that I see are low horsepower tractors, frankly, because there’s just more manufacturers so supply is built back up,” he says. “And just since the second week of December, we’re starting to see one- to three-year-old late model combine softened a little bit. It’s not like prices are dropping like a rock, but just softening.”

Related Stories:

challenges consistently hit agriculture in 2022. While 2023 has brought improvement with fertilizer availability, a sector still fragile to supply chain issues is the farm equipment sector.

From tires and tracks, to a new problem with castings, leading equipment manufacturers like Case IH, John Deere and Great Plains all say the supply chain is still an issue.

“We’re conditioned to expect the black swans to the point where they’re no longer black swans, they’re just kind of inevitable disruptions,” says Sam Taylor, farm inputs analyst for

During National Farm Machinery Show (NFMS) last week, booth after booth displayed the latest in technology and equipment, but leaders within the ag equipment sector say the supply chain issues are a hurdle in bringing new products to market.

“Absolutely, it’s been an issue.
Great Plains Adds to Tillage Tool and Seeding Lineups and Teams Up With Bayer

On Thursday, at the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Great Plains introduced the VT1100 Turbo-Max, announced an expanded lineup for its Terra-Max variable-intensity tool and enhanced the Turbo-Seeder offering for cover crop and forage compatibility. To support producers in regenerative ag efforts Great Plains is also teaming up with Bayer.

Redesigned Components on Turbo-Max Vertical Tillage Tool

Building on the Turbo-Max true vertical tillage tool, the VT1100 Turbo-Max offers several redesigned components.

“The new VT1100 builds upon the legacy of true vertical tillage machines with its use of straight, non-concave blades,” says Blake Bergkamp, Great Plains research agronomist. “Now with a choice of 20" or 22" straight Turbo blades, the VT1100 Turbo-Max, in combination with our new finishing attachment options, is one of the most versatile vertical tillage tools on the market.”

The robust frame supports new finishing attachments and heavier transport tires and axles. Producers can choose from a new chopper reel option for difficult, high-residue conditions, a new double basket attachment or a single basket attachment. The single and double basket attachments are available to order with flat or round bars to best match field conditions and soil types. According to Great Plains, the rear attachments offer greater flexibility and improved post-harvest residue management and seedbed preparation.

Available in sizes from 20ˈ to 40’, the VT1100 Turbo-Max offers gang angles that adjust up to 6 degrees for multi-season applications, but provides a true vertical finish when run at zero degrees.

More National Farm Machinery Show News

“Great Plains defines true vertical tillage as a system that works the soil vertically to remove or avoid the addition of horizontal, density-change layers,” Bergkamp adds. “While maintaining a zero degree gang angle, the VT1100 Turbo-Max continues to create the ultimate seedbed by creating a level planting surface and uniform soil profile. These characteristics have been proven to promote consistent germination and crop emergence and improve root development. Vertical tillage products like the VT1100 are also key to managing long-term soil health, including water infiltration, nutrient utilization, and reducing soil compaction and erosion.”

To provide additional control and convenience, the VT1100 Turbo-Max is now offered with the optional Implement Command system, to set, adjust and monitor the unit from the tractor cab. Implement Command is ISOBUS-compatible and works with the tractor’s existing virtual terminal.

Models from 8.5ˈ to 15ˈ working widths will continue to be offered under the standard Turbo-Max name, with the original frame and features.

Terra-Max Lineup for Lower Horsepower Tractors

As a variable-intensity tool, the HT1100 Terra-Max sizes residue, helps control weeds and prepares the seedbed. Now available in 10ˈ, 12ˈ and 15ˈ widths, the new models are compatible with lower horsepower tractors–from 125 hp to 200 hp.

All Terra-Max models are designed with adjustable front and rear coulter gangs to perform variable-intensity tillage for primary and seedbed preparation applications. The front gangs adjust from 0 degrees to 8 degrees, while the rear coulter gangs adjust proportionally from 0 degrees to 6 degrees to adapt in changing soil conditions. Combined with the optional double finishing reel, producers can achieve versatile soil management with a level finish, according to the company.

Turbo-Seeder for Cover Crops and Forage Compatibility

Compatible with select Terra-Max and Turbo-Max models, The TS9100 Turbo-Seeder is a seeding attachment available in two sizes.

“Using the Turbo-Seeder, operators now have the ability to seed a cover crop, overseed a hay field or establish a forage crop and incorporate residue – all in a single pass,” Bergkamp says.

With a 19.2-bu. capacity on 10' to 15ˈ Terra-Max models, the Turbo-Seeder can seed a variety of crops, such as alfalfa, cover crop mixes, small grains and other forages.

Great Plains and Bayer Support Regenerative Ag Efforts

Great Plains is teaming up with ForGround by Bayer to help producers overcome barriers, reduce risks and provide tools and resources on their adoption of a systems-based approach to soil management. In its company announcement Great Plains acknowledges it was strategically selected to join ForGround by Bayer’s “grower support networks.”

Great Plains is helping producers adopt a holistic, systems-based approach to soil management by:

Supporting Soil Health. Great Plains encourages producers to plant cover crops and companion crops to sustain soil microbial life, protect the soil surface from extreme temperatures and intense rainfall, cycle nutrients and begin to regenerate soils for future generations.

Using Innovative Technology. Innovative and practical technology such as variable-rate seeding and prescription mapping help maximize input efficiency and improve ROI of seed, fertilizer, chemical and fuel inputs.

Encouraging Efficient Soil Management to Protect Soil Carbon and Organic Matter. Great Plains recommends a systems-based soil management approach to reduce tillage intensity and increase long-term soil health. For no-till producers, it’s important to remove sub-surface compaction with minimal residue disturbance to improve crop yield potential. True vertical tillage implements manage residue and reduce soil surface compaction with minimal soil disturbance, while improving crop yield and carbon capture potential.

As part of the ForGround by Bayer membership program, growers will receive a $50 per foot discount on new Great Plains box drills, as well as a Climate FieldView Plus subscription and access to the Bayer Carbon program with revenue opportunities. ForGround by Bayer is free to join and open to all U.S. farmers, whether they are exploring, growing or expanding their regenerative agriculture practices.

To learn more about what’s new from Great Plains, visit

“Our new 5000 Series row unit is built to run longer and stronger, while providing increased protection for farmers’ investment,” says Susanne Veatch, Kinze president. “It elevates precision and performance to the next level, providing farmers with more planting control and efficiency.”

More National Farm Machinery Show News

Other benefits include:

Ability to upgrade from Kinze’s True Rate vacuum electric meter to True Speed high-speed electric meter.

A front-end design that allows multiple residue options, including Yetter air-adjustable row cleaners, manual row cleaners and coulters.

Quick lockup-closing wheels for testing depth and seed placement.

Dedicated storage under the lid for seed and vacuum tube plugs.

Integrated harness routing and retention to protect the electric-drive system harness.

The new planters will replace Kinze’s current 4905 and 4705 models with the same configurations. The 5900 will be available in 24-row, 30”; 16-row, 30”; and 12-row, 30” configurations. The 5700 will be offered in 36-row, 20” and 24-row, 30” versions as well as a new 24-row, 20” narrow-row planter.

New Frame Option

In addition to the new row unit, the 5700 24-row, 20” planter features a new 40’, three-section frame configuration. It offers front-mounted, high-flotation tires with 30 degrees of wing flex for high-operating and transport clearance. True Speed or True Rate electric meters, bulk seed and 500-gal. fertilizer capacity round out the features.

The new planters’ articulated swivel hitch–similar to what is used on Kinze’s Mach Till disk–supports category 4 and 5 hitches.

Fertilizer System

A new diaphragm pump can run dry for 10 minutes. It is able to pull from remote auxiliary tanks and features a 2 to 25 gal. per acre application range while planting at speeds of 3 to 12 mph. A pressure and flow compensated system allows for better rate control and range per orifice.

A new fertilizer flow switch allows for a single rate across the planter as well as single row section control. At low fertilizer rates, Kinze says the system offers a better idea of flow, is easy to clean and resists tacky fertilizer.

The flow switch is more compact with fewer leak points and features a cap that can be removed with a quarter turn to clean. The wheel flow sensor is replaceable.

Blue Vantage Display Updates

For 2024, remote support is available for the Blue Vantage display as well as cloud-to-cloud data sharing and customization. Prescription rate changes can be made after a prescription has been loaded. The display also supports planting wheat with True Rate meters.

For more information on the new 5000 Series row unit and 5900 and 5700 planters, which will be available to order starting in April 2023, contact a Kinze dealer or visit Kinze.com.

Commercial Grain System Features Scaled For On-Farm Use

To give farmers the convenience, efficiency, and speed of notouch permanent grain movement usually found in commercial grain operations, AGI announces the C-Line permanent grain handling system.

“Without a doubt, the agricultural work force continues to shrink. This is an issue for busy growers, who face increased pressure to do more with less. We are excited to launch the C-line permanent grain handling system for farm and light commercial use,” said David Wernsing, AGI Senior Director of Global Product Management for Permanent Handling Products. “This system is engineered to meet AGI’s highest manufacturing standards, and, most importantly, delivers virtually hands-free efficient grain transfer against the farm’s high-capacity, seasonal harvest needs.”

The C-line is a lowtouch permanent grain handling system. It can move whole grains up to 10,000 bushels per hour (bph). The C-line is designed as a simple plug-and-play, modular structure engineered for speed.

Made in North America, the C-line is built from components including:

The C-line bucket elevator handles whole grains up to 10,400 bph with discharge heights to 150 feet.

The en-masse chain conveyor delivers up to 11,000 bph with lengths up to 150 feet in horizontal arrangements or at slight inclines.

The bulk-flow chain conveyor moves whole grains up to 11,000 bph in inclines up to 45 degrees.

“The auger may be one of the most hardworking pieces of equipment on a grain operation,” said Matthew Manness, AGI Director of Global Product Management for Portable Material Handling. “They tend to run long hours at high capacities during harvest and spend most of their time exposed to the elements. So, they must be durable as well as reliable. AGI engineered these next-gen augers to extend lifespan, reduce downtime, increase serviceability, and provide high-capacity output and efficiency.”

The MKX 2 and HX2 augers feature a discharge spout that reduces horsepower requirements up to 20% while delivering fast, efficient flow of grain. The auger series have easy-to-access service points with larger access and clean-out doors on the boot to reach the internal gearboxes and bearings.

The AGI Hutchinson-Mayrath HX2 augers feature Abrasive Resistant (AR) flighting, which lasts three times longer than regular flighting.

The AGI Westfield MKX 2 augers feature Wear Edge Technology in the hopper flights, transition flight, swing tube flight, and lower flight.

Steinbauer Product Improves Diesel Engine Efficiency

Farmers using diesel engines on their operations can take advantage of a plug-and-play product from

        Steinbauer

         that’s intended to boost efficiency.

“All we’re doing is altering the injection signal,” says Wayne Unrath, territory sales manager, during an interview at the 2013 National Farm Machinery Show.

The company began in 1997 in Austria in the garage of founder Herbert Steinbauer. It began to grow after a car dealer expressed interest in the product, extending to the agricultural sector in the early 2000s and arriving in the U.S. in 2007.

The product, called the Steinbauer PowerModule, is plugged in downstream from the engine control module (ECM) and relies on original-equipment connections without leaving any footprint, Unrath says. The product is customized to customer equipment such as tractors, combines and sprayers. Most of the time, the product can be installed in less than 15 minutes.

On average, the Steinbauer product increases horsepower and torque by between 20% and 25%, Unrath says. The product is safe and compliant with all Tier 4 engines. Resulting carbon dioxide emissions are between 10% to 15% lower, and the product costs between $1,800 and $2,400.

Farmers with questions about use of the product with a piece of machinery should consult their dealers before installation, Unrath says. It’s interchangeable with newer models of the Steinbauer product, and the company will perform free software upgrades.

There are 40 active Steinbauer distributors and dealers in the U.S., Unrath says. The company offers a free 14-day trial, a 30-day money-back guarantee and a three-year warranty.

..................................

McFarlane Introduces the Quadra-Till Disk Chisel

Designed as a one-pass vertical tillage tool, the Quadra-Till from McFarlane fits into a vertical tillage system. The Quadra-Till is available in four sizes, 7 shank, 9 shank, 22 shank, and 13 shank, and it ranges from 8’9” to 19’1” working width.

The disk frame is constructed of 3”x6” tubing, the chisel frame is 4”x6” and the main frame is 6”x8” tubing.
The front disk gangs are adjustable to 12, 14, and 16 degrees for operating angle. The blades are set on 10” spacing and provide a 5” effective cut for residue sizing, and gang mounted reversible scrapers.
A coil spring system protects the disk frame from obstructions in the field, and it also prevents premature wear when operating in extremely hard ground conditions.
Heavy-duty clamp style shank mounts on 15” spacing provide even shatter across the working width of the machine. The 2” x 1 ¼” edge-bent shanks allows for 37” of under frame clearance. Hard surfaced 3” twisted shovels are standard with 2” straight points or 4” twisted shovels available as an option.

The leveler disk is hydraulically adjustable with depth indicator level ridges left by chisel shanks.
The leveling harrow is a fully flexible four-bar spike harrow. The heavy-duty gang angle harrow bars feature ¾” square and 11” long high strength teeth. The 11” tooth spacing provides 2 ¾” of effective tooth spacing.
****************************
Read

        Kuhn Krause Dominator 4855

Designed to reduce subsoil compaction, provide residue management and provide a level field finish, the Dominator 4855 is available in 7, 9, 11 and 13 shank configurations. All walking beam weldments include 2 ¾” diameter “slip-in” spindles and 8-bolt wheel hubs, rated at 10,000 lb. each. The 4855-11 and 4855-13 models sport a new tire size with 360/65R x 17.5, which maintains flotation capabilities while increasing the weight capacity by 2,200 lb. per tire to transport reliability. For easier maintenance, the 4855 includes hardened bushings and heat treated pins to replace grease zerks and standard pivot pins in the parallel mount for the rear disc conditioner’s lower links.

A new angular contact bearing cartridge has been incorporated into each rear disc conditioner blade assembly. This bearing uses a multi-lip (5) bearing seal and a machined hub spindle. Each disc conditioner blade is secured to the hub spindle and bearing assembly with a 5-bolt blade pattern. The 4855 comes with an optional 24/7 Soil Conditioning Reel that consists of a new HD Round Bar Reel with maintenance free bearing assemblies mounted on a heavy duty ductile cast bearing arms.

To learn more, visit

Horsch Joker HD

To better manage shallow fall tillage in areas of high residue and extreme soil conditions, the Joker HD sports larger disc blades. With a 20% increase in blade size, the model is able to quickly size and blend residue down to a maximum operating depth of 6". The 24-inch discs have also moved to a six-bolt hub on a newly designed, heavier bearing.

With a larger distance between the two rows of discs, the residue and soil is cut a second time to ensure it is sized properly to accelerate the decomposition process. The transport tires have been integrated into the frame to move more weight over the center and directly add to its ability to penetrate.

To maintain even working depths across the machine, the model is equipped with a pressurized accumulator system, adding down pressure to the wings, while maintaining flexibility for rolling terrain. Depth setting is controlled by a single point on the frame or through the tractor cab with the electronic depth control option. Gauge wheel adjustments are adjustable by a hydraulic cylinder or from the cab.

The Joker HD series comes in 20-, 30-, and 40-ft. working widths and will be released in fall 2015.

For more information, visit

        .

Summers VRT2530 Variable-Rate Tillage Tool

Variable-rate technology is commonly used across the countryside and the method can also be seen in tillage equipment. Available in sizes up to 40 ft. wide, the VRT2530 offers a mix of conventional and vertical tillage capabilities and allows the operator to adjust tillage aggressiveness on the go. The model features a front row of dual-mounted disk blades and a rear row of gang-mounted coulter blades. The front disk blades are slightly concave and include a manually adjustable angle setting from 5° to 24°. The rear coulter blades are fixed at a 0° angle for true vertical tillage performance.

Using the hydraulic hitch, the operator can shift weight between the front and rear blades. More weight on the front increases soil mixing and placing more weight on the rear results in residue sizing with less soil disturbance. Weight can be shifted equally between the front and rear to achieve a combination of benefits.

For more information, visit

McFarlane Mfg. Co. is expanding its tillage lineup offering its first ever Universal Tillage machine, the Incite 5000 series. The machine provides the flexibility to adjust to a wide range of soil types and field conditions, whether used in spring or fall. The 28 wave concave blades are versatile enough for both high speed operation at shallow depths or up to 6" for more traditional disc work.

Available in working widths from 14' to 40', the machine is equipped with the Universal Tillage Selector which allows for on-the-go hydraulic adjustment of disc gang angles to 3°, 6° or 9°. The 7-blade, 18" diameter open center Dura-Reel offers hydraulic height adjustment from the disc blade depth to 8" above. The 3-Bar Flexible Tooth Harrow in combination with the High Carbon 8-Flat Bar Rolling Basket allow for use in different soils and residue conditions for the ultimate finished seedbed.

For more information, visit

Precision Planting Unveils Electric vDrive System

As the trend for electric drives on planters continues to grow, Precision Planting has introduced its electric vDrive which will be an option for vSet meters. The system is outfitted with a 12 volt motor on each meter. Using the 20/20 SeedSense, the vDrive provides single row control without clutches, hydraulic motors and chains or cables. Another advantage of electric control is the fast response, particularly when planting curves, and its precise control with ground speed changes or with variable rate prescriptions.

For more:

New Case IH 2000 Series Early Riser Planter Built 'From the Ground Up'

Case IH gave attendees of the 2016 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky., a literal unveiling of its latest product launch when it removed a red drape from its new 2000 Series Early Riser planter. That’s because company officials wanted to reinforce that it wasn’t an upgrade – it was brand-new.

“It’s a completely new planter, with one mission in mind – design and develop the very best planter in the business,” says Monte Weller, platform manager. “We touched the entire planter, from the ground up.”

Tony McClellend, Case IH planter marketing manager, says the redesign started with a total overhaul of the row unit, but the toolbar, hydraulic system, alternator and other planter areas also received noted improvements over prior models.

“It was all based on direct customer feedback and field-testing,” McClellend says. “We made sure that this new planter is not only extremely accurate, it’s also robust enough to deliver precise placement across all terrains, crop types and speeds for faster, more uniform emergence.”

Simplicity is also an important feature, McClellend adds. Operators will be able to make many adjustments from the cab. Other adjustments are made automatically and work seamlessly without operator interference, he says.

The 2000 Early Riser planter series will include factory integrated seed placement technologies from Precision Planting such as DeltaForce, vSet and SpeedTube, which allow for consistent spacing and singularity, accurate depth control and accurate planting speeds of up to 10 mph.

Case IH put its planter to the test at higher speeds in a 2015 southwest Wisconsin trial, comparing its Ealry Riser 2150 with the Deere 1775NT ExactEmerge and Kinzee 4900 planters. The test plots were planted on the same day, using the same hybrid, at 2” depth and a 38,000 plant population, at 6, 8 and 10 mph. According to Case IH, the Early Riser plots yielded higher every single time.

(Note: Kinze was not tested at 10 mph. Also, these results have not been replicated by a third party at this time.)

Case IH plans to release a four-tiered planter offering through 2016 and 2017:

1. The2000 Series Early Riser planters will let farmers customize their planter factory-direct. The first models, including 12-, 16- and 24-row, 30-inch front-fold machines will be available in time for the 2017 planting season.

2. Farmers who order certain 1200 series Early Riser planter models in 2016 can equip with Precision Planting components, including vDrive with vSet electric meter-drive system, plus CleanSweep residue managers and DeltaForce hydraulic down force.

3. Farmers can also order 1200 series Early Riser planters with Advanced Seed Metering (ASM) technology, which accommodates a wide variety of seed types and sizes at high plant populations, along with other features like a two-stage closing system, furrow firming point, seed protection show and more.

4. Farmers with certain used late-model Early Planter models can also upgrade to the technology they want through participating Case IH dealerships. Their dealer can help them modify existing models to the level best fit for their operation.

Visit

Weakened Demand for Used Combines Persists

In contrast to record used-tractor prices at auction, combine prices have been falling since about 2010, says Greg Peterson, known to many as Machinery Pete.

The issue? Supply and demand. New combines sell well, but identifying buyers for the same kind of equipment that is between one and three years old has proven challenging.

Watch Peterson’s complete used combine outlook in the video below:

Hardi Enters Self-Propelled Sprayer Market

A longtime manufacturer of equipment for the U.S. agricultural market is extending its reach into the self-propelled sprayer market. In January, Hardi North America launched two new models, Presidio and Saritor, that it aims to carry far into the future.

“This is our introduction, but we been developing this project for many years,” says Brad Frazier, national sales manager, Hardi North America. Founded in 1957 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Hardi has had a presence in North America since 1984 and specializes in pumps, spraying equipment such as pull-type sprayers and other products including orchard and vineyard sprayers.

Representatives were available to talk about the new sprayers during the 2013 National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Ky., this month.

So far, Hardi’s new self-propelled sprayer brands comprise three models. The Presidio 2700, considered an entry-level model for mid-size farmers, features a 700-gal. tank, boom options of 80’ or 90’, hydrostatic drive, a Deutz TCD2012 Tier III engine and ground speeds of up to 25 mph, among other features. It offers tallest-in-class clearance of 58", making it ideal for corn or post-emergence application, Frazier says.

Its empty weight of 16,225 lb. makes it the lightest sprayer in its class, as well as the sprayer with the best weight distribution for that class, he says. List price ranges from $215,993 to $219,606.

Named for the Roman god of weeding and hoeing, the Saritor line features two models, the 4000 (featuring an 1,100-gal. tank) and the 5000 (1,300-gal. tank). Both are intended for use by mid- to large-scale producers, can operate with a boom up to 132’ wide and offer clearance of between 48" and 54". Ground speeds range from 31 mph for the 4000 to 33.5 mph for the 5000. Both are powered by a Cummins QSB6.7 Tier III engine. The 4000 ranges in price from $301,300 to $313,300 depending on boom size, while the 5000 ranges from $311,500 to $322,500.

Differentiating the sprayers are their fluid systems setup and booms, Frazier says. Hardi DynamicFluid4 system accurately delivers the target rate without delay regardless of whether sections are switched on, a change in speed is in progress or the machine is turning in or out of headlands. The DynamicFluid4 processor analyzes spraying data 20 times per second and provides preemptive rate control capability, precisely altering pump speed. The fluid system is driven by the Hardi 650 wet seal run dry centrifugal pump, which can achieve 15 gpm to 30 gpm rate changes in 1.5 seconds.

The in-cab application controller platform provides a high level of performance application precision with all function and rate control at the fingertips of the operator. Loading is fast and efficient with controls that are within easy reach and logically placed in the work zone. Two color-coded smartvalves operate the primary filling, spraying and cleaning functions. Loading chemicals is safe and easy via a high-capacity turbofiller that is lowered to provide easy access.

Booms also matter. The Presidio sprayer is equipped with a proven Eagle boom that can apply accurately at high speeds on rugged terrain such as no-till fields, Frazier says. It offers strong 2-D truss construction supported by fast-acting paralift boom height control.

Both Saritor models are equipped with a new Terra Force boom that consists of a 3-D truss construction supported by an extra-wide paralift, which further enhances stability for a smooth ride and performance. The AutoTerrain boom management system provides on-the-go stability control. Its automatic height system allows the operator to plug in a predetermined height–20" above the crop is commonly used with 110-degree flat-fan nozzles, for example–for consistent application.

Production for 2013 already is sold out for all of Hardi’s self-propelled sprayer models, Frazier says. The company is ramping up production at its North American headquarters in the U.S., which opened in 1988 in Davenport, Iowa. There are more than 200 Hardi dealers in North America.

“The overall feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Frazier says.

The company chose to limit both first-year production and its geographic area for its initial sprayer introduction to Iowa and surrounding states such as Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Illinois. Production capabilities for 2014 have not been finalized.

Production of models with tanks capable of carrying more than 1,300 gal. of fluid is planned over the next five years, Frazier says. The goal is to introduce a full line of self-propelled sprayers featuring many configurations of horsepower and boom size.

The 2,600-gal. CM, introduced last year, is now available and offers the largest capacity available from any U.S. manufacturer.

Raven Unveils New NH3 Application Systems

Two products introduced this month by Raven Industries aim to help farmers apply anhydrous ammonia (NH3) over large operations in a shorter timeframe. Additionally, new features will make application safer and reduce wear on components.

The first product is the AccuFlow Vortex, a single-cooler NH3 application system with a capacity in excess of 50 gpm. The system comes preassembled and maintains a smaller footprint on the applicator toolbar.

“It’s 25% more than what a dual-cooler system will cool,” notes Gary Esselink, product manager for application controls, during a kickoff event on the eve of the

. The AccuFlow Vortex will replace Raven’s existing dual-cooler system that featured a capacity of roughly 40 gpm.

The second product is the AccuFlow HP+ system, which features the Vortex cooler and a dynamically controlled pump for added capacity through the field.

“Now we are doing in excess of 80 gpm, which is equivalent to someone pulling a 60-foot toolbar and doing 300 lb. of N per acre and driving 9.3 mph,” Esselink says. The system replaces Raven’s previous high-performance system. Farmers working on smaller operations will continue to have access to Raven’s single conventional cooler with 30 gpm of capacity.

Other features of the new application systems include:

Five expansion points for maximum cooling.

Stainless steel components.

Groove lock fittings equipped with an interior seal have replaced pipe fittings, cutting the time required to access the flow meter from as much as 30 minutes to fewer than 10.

Time required to bleed anhydrous from the system has been reduced from as much as 3 hours to 20 minutes. Bleeding is now safer because it is controlled at the front of the machine and goes out the back. Additionally, a safety bleed valve can be used once the system is drained to ensure any leftover anhydrous is evacuated.

Rotating fins in the main flow tube mix cooler and warmer anhydrous, enhancing the capacity of the system and creating uniform coolness.

Pressure transducer senses valves that fail to open and shuts down the system when it crosses a specified threshold for added safety. The system has been tested for bleeding at up to 750 psi.

The upgrades are a reflection of demand from large farms and custom applicators, Esselink says. Conventional wisdom has held that 1 lb. of nitrogen can be used to produce 1 bu. of corn, so as producers increasingly aim for 300 bu., more NH3 needs to be applied at faster rates.

Shipments of both products begin March 1.
