      <title>Winter Is Coming: Farm Equipment Prep Pointers From an Oil and Fuels Expert</title>

        Every winter, after fall harvest and tillage are wrapped up, farmers begin prepping farm equipment for the long slumber ahead until spring planting arrives. Or, if you plan on using that tractor or UTV to move snow or for other tasks around the farm, you need to prep your machinery for that as well.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;There are several essential steps farmers need to consider for winter farm machinery use and storage, says Jonathan Woetzel. Woetzel has enjoyed a long career with Minnesota-based cooperative CHS, where he focuses on quality assurance for the Cenex brand, which is CHS’ in-house label for its fuels, lubricants and propane.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;How to handle fuel&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        His first piece of winter farm equipment preparation advice for farmers and fleet managers is make sure you have the right diesel fuel on hand.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The wax that naturally occurs in diesel fuel, especially No. 2 diesel fuel, when it gets too cold, the wax crystallizes and becomes a solid form that doesn’t pass through filters very well,” Woetzel explains. “There are fuels available, like our Cenex Winter Master premium diesel fuel, that include additives to prevent gelling.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That unwanted fuel thickening, or gelling as Woetzel calls it, is mitigated specifically by cold flow improver (CFI) additives in the fuel.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For any gasoline-fueled equipment you’re not planning on running this winter, Woetzel recommends adding a fuel stabilizer to the tank if you’re not able to empty it out prior to storage. Although, oftentimes a premium winter diesel fuel blend will already contain fuel stabilizers, so check with your fuel supplier before investing in aftermarket stabilizers.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Oil and lubricants&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Changing the oil in any equipment you store for winter is a good idea, he adds.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I say that because used oil, if it’s been in there for quite some time, has lost some of its ability to prevent rust and corrosion,” Woetzel says. “So, get the old oil out and put in fresh oil and a new filter, and then fire it up and run it for 10 minutes or so to circulate the oil. Now all the internal engine parts are coated with oil to prevent rust and corrosion.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The quiet winter period is also a great time to send off any used oil samples for lab analysis, which helps detect internal equipment issues (e.g., contaminants like coolant leaks or unusual engine wear), and then you can address maintenance needs before spring planting season. Most oil testing services turn samples around in 48 hours and will email a PDF of the results.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Another consideration is oil type. You want engine oil that will flow quickly as the machine starts up. Woetzel says you want to use high-quality synthetic oil.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“A full synthetic gives better cold starting capabilities and lubrication,” he adds. “And you want to make sure you have the right viscosity grade, like a 5W-40. That 5W means it’s going to flow very well right away at cold startup and work well in cold temperatures.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Coolant and antifreeze&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Because coolants and antifreeze are formulated for a wide range of temperatures, there’s not much to worry about in that regard. Woetzel does recommend checking your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended coolant change intervals, and if you’re due for a coolant swap, get that done (and a coolant flush) before winter hits.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If you’ve purchased a used machine that’s already full of antifreeze, but you’re not sure what type or if it’s the right formulation for your climate, there are handheld testers that you can purchase to verify the fluid’s actual freeze point.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Finally: hit those grease&lt;/b&gt; &lt;b&gt;points&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Take a second and think about when you last greased up all the grease points on your tractor, combine, planter or tillage tool, Woetzel says. If you’re putting the machine into storage and won’t need it until it warms up, a standard No. 2 grease is good for spring, summer and fall. If you’re going to keep using it during the winter, he recommends using a No. 1 grease.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We tell them to switch to a No. 1 grease, which is softer and easier to pump, and it flows better,” Woetzel explains. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning used equipment buyers nationwide about another sophisticated scam involving used farm equipment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This particular grift, according to a press release from BBB, involved a fake online heavy equipment retailer impersonating a legitimate Missouri dealership, Cook Equipment &amp;amp; Trucking (Marble Hill, Mo.).&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Buyers from across the U.S., some even from as far away as California and Arizona, reported losing a total of $223,000 after attempting to purchase heavy equipment and farm machinery through fraudulent websites and Facebook Marketplace ads. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;Victims say they were “ghosted” after wiring money for equipment that never arrived. The BBB does not say whether the victims were able to dispute the fraudulent charges and claw back the proceeds from the scammers. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The reported fraudulent transactions include:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;$45,000 for a skid steer loader from a buyer in Oak Hills, Calif.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$32,000 for an excavator from a buyer in Hancock, Mich.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$29,500 for a trailer from a buyer in Amanda, Ohio &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$29,000 for a trailer from a buyer in Greenville, N.C. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$28,000 for a skid steer loader from a buyer in Eastman, Wis.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$31,000 for an excavator from a buyer in Des Moines, Iowa.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;$29,000 for a skid steer from a buyer in Blue, Ariz.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;BBB says the real Cook Equipment &amp;amp; Trucking, a small business operating since 2010, confirmed it has no website and is not affiliated with any online sales. The impersonators registered three fake websites, the most recent on July 14, and continue to run deceptive ads on social media.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Those shopping for heavy equipment and farm machinery online should do their due diligence so they don’t fall victim to a virtual vehicle vendor scam,” says Michelle L. Corey, president and CEO, BBB St. Louis. “If an item is priced well below market value, that’s a red flag.”&lt;br&gt;

        Nebraska native Andy Kreikemeier’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing all week, and it won’t go silent anytime soon.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That’s because his former hobby and volunteer side hustle, flying drones for the county emergency response team, transformed into a full-time gig as a spray drone operator. Kreikemeier is one-third of a team of spray drone pilots with business partners Brett Scheiding and Brad Eisenhauer. Together, the three local volunteer firefighters started Infinity Precision Ag, a custom drone application service provider in southeast Nebraska.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The Infinity team is in the crunch of the summer plant health application season, and farmers without access to a Hagie high-clearance sprayer or an aerial application service need the timely sprays these certified drone pilots provide to get their crop across the finish line and in good shape for fall harvest.&lt;br&gt;

        The trio is in their sophomore season offering per-acre spray drone application services to farmers, and the group learned “a ton” from last year’s rookie campaign.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Spray drones are definitely a good tool because they can do a lot of specialized things, and it’s fun to see the old farmers come out and watch these things. They’ll tell me ‘Never in my day would I have thought this was something I’d be using’,” Kreikemeier says. “It’s a fun change, and it works. You can get more precise with your applications, and you get the stuff where you want it at all times.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The team at Infinity exclusively flies Hylio spray drones, which are manufactured in Texas. Hylio was among

        While he won’t go as far as saying the drones are a superior application tool to a large ground rig or aerial application plane, he does see some advantages to using the technology.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The drones can definitely get the products deeper into the plant canopy — at least that’s what I’m seeing right now,” Kreikemeier says, adding he’s also seeing improved application quality on end-rows and sensitive areas near buffers, streams and rural housing developments. An aerial applicator would usually have to pull up and gain altitude to avoid those obstacles, potentially leaving some spray to drift off-target. But an unmanned drone can stay low and keep blasting active ingredients directly into the canopy.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Guys are definitely telling me they can see a difference between what the drones have done and what the planes have done,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Over on the East Coast, Joshua Berry got his start in the drone world along the same lines as many early adopters: he built up a custom photography and videography business for years before making the decision to integrate aerial photography to stay relevant.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The first drone he purchased is widely considered one of the “OGs” in the drone world: DJI’s Phantom 1. Berry recalls his aerial photography service didn’t take off right away, but he always knew ag was an industry he wanted to join. The realization came fast and hard that he was facing an uphill battle to make that dream a reality, as his family didn’t own land or have a legacy in farming.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Berry’s big breakthrough came when he started using drones equipped with thermal cameras to help deer hunters locate fallen prey deep in the woods. The service gave him a foot in the door with local farmers – many of whom are avid hunters or at the very least friends with hunters – along Maryland’s specialty ag-rich Eastern Shore.&lt;br&gt;

        “A guy out in Ohio saw what I was doing and wanted to get into the deer recovery stuff, so he befriended me, and I helped teach him a couple things,” Berry says. “One day he calls me up and he’s like, ‘Yo, have you seen these agricultural drones?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I have my eye on it.’ And he tells me it’s going to be the next big thing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Berry started doing research and soon enough he agreed with his buddy in Ohio that spray drones would be his ticket to a career in farming. He ordered a pair of DJI Agras T-40 models and started working on getting licensed to legally apply chemicals. &lt;br&gt;

        That took him a few months (today the FAA licensing process has been streamlined), and he was able to start flying and applying midway through the 2024 growing season.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I did a lot of research and networking before I flew a single acre, so I felt like I set myself up for success (early on),” Berry says. “Even though it was a dry year – dry and hot means there’s not a lot of pressure on farmers to spray – I ended the season with between 2,500 and 3,000 acres. For a guy in his first half of a season, I was happy with that.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;This year, Berry’s acreage will double to about 6,000-7,000. That’s an impressive figure, considering how fields are laid out on the East Coast. This isn’t Iowa, Berry says, where a drone operator can park at an intersection and knock out 300 acres of flat, continuous fields without having to move the truck and tender trailer.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As far as the job mix this summer, he is putting on a lot of single pass fungicide-insecticide-liquid fertilizer applications across a diverse mix of crops. Berry is also hearing some farmers in his area are buying drones themselves and skipping the whole FAA licensing process to spray their crops themselves.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“That’s going to hurt us as an industry, big time. And also, it’s going to hurt the farmers eventually. Even though the enforcement wing of the FAA is almost nonexistent, there is enforcement out there,” he says. “They may not have the manpower (now), but if that changes, you’re going to see these unlicensed guys really start to get dinged.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        The Mitten State is a good proving ground for spray drone applications, says Leon Thelen, agricultural drone application specialist, On Point Application Group (Battle Creek, Mich.).&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For one, there aren’t many options for custom aerial application services available to growers like there are in the western Corn Belt. And Michigan farms are often broken into collections of smaller, oddly shaped fields with power lines, tree stands and residential developments nearby. That makes plane applications dicey.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;And finally, the state has a diverse crop mix that features a lot of high-value, specialty crops like cranberries, cherries, potatoes and sugar beets. There are a lot of farmers looking to make applications without running over expensive plants with a ground rig.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;Thelen says On Point Application Group is doing a lot of field border insecticide applications, spot spraying tough weed escapes like water hemp, and putting out full field broadcast applications of fungicides with its XAG P140 spray drones.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;One critical aspect of the business Thelen and his team have sorted out over the past few months is tendering. He says the giant, bi-level prefab drone tender trailers you see around the Midwest are good for most operations, but a smaller footprint tender that can fit in the back of an extended pickup is ideal for the type of work he’s doing in Michigan.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Being that I’ve backed a trailer into a lot of fields, I like lightweight equipment that’s nimble,” he says. “We’ve got a trailer with 1,000 gallons of water and a mix tank that we can leave at the field edge and unhook. Then we have this 200-gallon hot tank with our charging equipment , batteries and everything we can take into the field. This setup works well when you’re working off (irrigation) pivot lanes or back in behind the woods. I like to be close to the field.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Pflugh, 70, has cobbled together an impressive collection of classic Oliver tractors; he thinks he acquired the 1855 back in 1988 or 1989. The old workhorse hasn’t shown any signs of slowing down just yet: “This tractor just wants to run,” Pflugh says. “It’s strong … it likes to throttle.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Pflugh’s collection started with his Oliver 1655, and he just kept adding to the fleet over the years. He still farms corn, soybeans and hay to feed to his beef cattle on just over 120 acres, while his son and wife manage a local farm meat market that sells fresh freezer beef. &lt;br&gt;

        “The 55-series is just a nice tractor,” he says. “They dressed them up from the fifties.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Pflugh says it was the eye-pleasing look of the Oliver line that drew him in right off the bat. From the two front headlights to the styled grill and iconic white trim that sets off the engine compartment, the classic tractors have that timeless, from-another-era-Americana feel that you can’t replicate today.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Don’t let the good looks fool you, though: Plugh still uses the Oliver 1855 around the farm, grinding feed, mowing hay, disking fields and hauling manure to spread across his rolling Alleghany valley fields.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The tractor’s engine, a Waukesha Turbo, features a straight pipe exhaust that triumphantly juts to the heavens from the front hood scoop. Waukesha Motor Company (Waukesha, Wis.) was founded in 1906 and built over 400,000 lightweight, powerful tractor engines before closing shop for good in the early 1970s. Oliver Tractor Co. was reportedly the engine builder’s largest customer, according to the Waukesha Engine Historical Society.&lt;br&gt;

        , we circled back with farm equipment manufacturers to get a read on how tariffs will affect where machines are made.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Many companies across a wide range of industries are considering or even moving forward with plans to reshore production from overseas back into the United States.         The Duluth, Ga.-based equipment manufacturer says its dedication to American farmers and its own strategic investment plans are “key drivers of our overall growth strategy,” according to an AGCO spokesperson.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The rest of the statement from AGCO, which builds the Fendt and Massey Ferguson equipment brands along with its own AGCO machines, regarding U.S. expansion plans can be found below:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;Since 2020, we have invested just under $3 billion in the U.S. across new and expanded manufacturing facilities, product innovations and the largest ag tech deal in the history of the industry. Our commitment has extended across our various brands, locations and Research &amp;amp; Development (R&amp;amp;D) efforts, including the notable 2024 joint venture establishing Colorado-based PTx Trimble, the inauguration of Fendt Lodge – the North American headquarters of Fendt – in Minnesota, a new precision ag production facility in Illinois, modernization of systems and technologies in one of our Kansas plants, and U.S.-based R&amp;amp;D for new sprayer and planter technology.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;These investments, AGCO says, will not only enhance production at its U.S. facilities for years to come, but also ensure AGCO remains at the forefront of ag innovation around the world.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Claas&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Claas is still a somewhat fresh face to the North American farm equipment market, but the company has deep roots in Europe. It was founded over 100 years ago in a small German farming town, and today the company has global headquarters in Harsewinkel, Germany.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But you may not be aware that Claas has also built a significant manufacturing operation in America’s heartland. The company opened its Lexion combine production campus, located just south of downtown Omaha, Neb., in 1997. This year marks 10,000 Lexion combines rolling off the main production line inside the 120,000 sq. ft. facility.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Claas has significant expansion plans in place for its Omaha campus, including doubling its overall production footprint for the main manufacturing building as well as adding a new training and apprenticeship building.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Here is the statement Matthias Ristow, president &amp;amp; managing director of business administration – Claas Omaha, shared regarding the company’s expansion plans:&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;Claas is investing significantly in its production hub in the United States, and not only recently. Over the last five years, we have added to our production facility to provide a better location for our rework and reconfiguration areas, as well as a dedicated work area for our quality control department for the pre-delivery inspections each machine must go through before being shipped. This is part of our comprehensive quality assurance program.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;We also have built a new service academy where we train all the technicians from our U.S. dealer network (we have a similar location in Canada) so we can keep their skills up to date and make sure they have the proper certifications to work on our machines. Technology updates and changes are trained there as well.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;Furthermore, our new service academy houses our apprenticeship program where we train the future assembly technicians in a three-year rigorous training program, managed by the German Chamber of Commerce. The program has several advantages. Technicians receive a regular paycheck (“earn while you learn”), receive an associate’s degree from a community college we partner with, receive a certificate from the German Chamber and have a job when they graduate from the program debt free.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;Farm Journal&lt;/i&gt; recently had the opportunity to tour Claas’ Omaha operation, where we learned the manufacturer is also expanding its partnerships with domestic material and component manufacturers.         Although short on specifics, CNH Industrial (Racine, Wisc.) confirms it plans to “continue to expand our footprint through capital investments in our U.S. facilities, partnerships with local suppliers and programs that strengthen the communities where we live and work.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;CNH adds it currently employs more than 9,000 people across 17 U.S. states, with 14 manufacturing facilities and 22 R&amp;amp;D centers active throughout North America.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;And approximately 70% of the components used in CNH Industrial’s U.S. plants are sourced from domestic suppliers while 95% its steel is purchased from U.S.-based mills. It says this approach to domestic material sourcing supports thousands of suppliers’ jobs and reinforces its investment in American-made quality.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;John Deere&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        The farm equipment manufacturer with global headquarters in Moline, Ill., was first to share its future investment plans with Farm Journal. Back in May, the company announced a 10-year, $20 billion outlay plan for its U.S. production base. This year alone, Deere says it will pour $100 million into its U.S. operations.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;John Deere says this initiative includes:&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;A 120,000 sq. ft. expansion of the company’s remanufacturing facility in Missouri.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Construction of a new excavator factory in Kernersville, N.C.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Expansion of its Greeneville, Tenn., turf equipment factory.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;New assembly lines for 9RX high-horsepower tractor production in Waterloo, Iowa.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;John Deere plans to invest a total of $22.5 billion into its U.S. manufacturing network once the 10-year project is complete.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Kubota North America&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Kubota Tractor Corporation (KTC) established its North America headquarters in Grapevine, TX., in 2017. The Japanese equipment manufacturer shared the following statement regarding U.S. expansion plans.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;North America is critical for Kubota, and the U.S. is our largest market. We firmly believe in local production for local consumption and have made more than $1 billion in U.S. infrastructure investments in the last couple years to meet the growing needs of our dealers and customers. For example, we recently announced the opening of a new loader facility in Gainesville, Ga., (invested $190 million), a new Western Distribution Center in California (invested $72 million), and an R&amp;amp;D facility (invested $100 million) that’s also in Georgia. We have other network investment announcements in the works, and we plan to continue to invest over the next five to 10 years as we respond to market demands. It can lead to anemia and, in some cases, death. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;ALHTs are native to eastern Asia, eastern China, Japan, the Russian Far East and Korea but were introduced to Australia, New Zealand and western Pacific Islands. In other countries, it can also be called a bush tick, cattle tick or scrub tick. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the U.S., ALHT was first detected in New Jersey in 2017.         Unfed ALHTs range from a light reddish-tan to a dark red with brown, dark markings. While the adult female grows to the size of a pea when full of blood, other stages of the tick are very small — about the size of a sesame seed.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Adult females are a grey-green with yellowish markings. Male ticks are rare.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;APHIS reports it only takes a single tick to create a population in a new location.&lt;br&gt;

        ALHTs need warm-blooded hosts to feed and survive. They have been found on various species of domestic animals — such as sheep, goats, dogs, cats, horses, cattle and chickens — and wildlife. The tick has also been found on people.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;What are the health risks?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        APHIS says ALHTs are not known to carry Lyme disease, but they can cause tickborne diseases affecting humans and animals such as: &lt;br&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Rocky Mountain spotted fever&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Heartland virus&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Powassan virus&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;APHIS says those diseases have not been confirmed outside of a laboratory setting in the U.S. In addition, U.S. ALHT populations can transmit U.S. Theileria orientalis Ikeda strain (Cattle theileriosis) in the laboratory.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In an

        , Grant Dewell, Extension beef veterinarian and associate professor, says cattle affected by Theileriosis will show signs of lethargy, anemia and difficulty breathing. They may develop ventral edema, exercise intolerance, jaundice and abortions.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Although signs of Theileriosis are similar to anaplasmosis, younger animals and calves often display more severe signs compared to mature cows and bulls,” he says. “Due to anemia from both tick infestation and Theileria, the risk of death can be elevated. If cattle producers suspect either Theileria or ALHT, have a veterinarian collect appropriate samples and submit them to a veterinary diagnostic lab.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;According to an

        ” Bobbi Pritt, MD, MSC, with the division of clinical microbiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., reported a human bite that occurred in New York in 2019. She says though the report of a human bite isn’t surprising, it proves the invasive longhorned tick continues to bite hosts in its newest location.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This is extremely worrisome for several reasons,” she writes. “One reason is Asian longhorned ticks can carry several important human pathogens, including the potentially fatal severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) virus and Rickettsia japonica, which cases Japanese spotted fever. While these pathogens have yet to be found in the United States, there is a risk of their future introduction.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Also, Pritt says several other human pathogens have been detected in the ticks, but it’s not clear if the ALHT species are able to transmit them to humans. They include &lt;i&gt;Anaplasma&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Ehrlichia&lt;/i&gt;, &lt;i&gt;Rickettsia&lt;/i&gt;, and &lt;i&gt;Borrelia&lt;/i&gt; species. Lyme disease is caused by &lt;i&gt;Borrelia burgdorferi&lt;/i&gt; bacteria.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She warns the organisms are present in states where ALHTs have been found and that it’s possible the tick — known to be an aggressive biter— might be able to transmit Heartland virus given its close relationship to SFTS virus.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;How to Tackle Ticks&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        According to APHIS, various strategies effectively mitigate tick populations on hosts and in the environment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;ul class="rte2-style-ul"&gt;&lt;li&gt;Regular tick treatments should be effective against ALHTs. Consult your veterinarian or agriculture extension agent about which products to use.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Check your livestock for ticks regularly.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Safely remove ticks from people and pets as quickly as possible. If you think you’ve found an ALHT, seal it in a zip-top bag and give it to your veterinarian for identification.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Habitat modifications can help prevent ticks on feedlots and pastures. This may include mowing grass, removing trees, reducing shade by thinning trees, understory removal and placing mulch barriers.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Apply acaricide using label instructions to tick habitats, such as woodland edges and grassy patches, during times when ticks are most actively seeking hosts. Although it varies by year, ALHTs are generally active from March to November. Consult your state and local regulations for approved acaricides.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;“Cattle producers should aggressively control external parasites this summer,” Dewell summarizes. “Insecticide ear tags alone are not enough to control ticks. Consider incorporating a back rubber or regularly applying a pour-on during the summer. Pyrethroid-based products are also available that include a tick control label. If an increase in tick infestations is observed, an avermectin pour-on may be the best intervention.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Your Next Read:

Within the F9 Series is the F9 1000, which is Deere’s largest forage harvest machine to date.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;(Editor’s Note: “PS” stands for Pferdestärke, which is the German term for horsepower. PS to horsepower is not an apples-to-apples equal ratio.         John Deere is not sharing its pricing just yet, but the two new models are built at its Zweibrucken, Germany, factory. John Deere dealers will begin taking orders for the aggressively styled, technology-packed harvesters this fall, with final delivery in time for the 2026 forage harvesting season.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Deere representatives declined comment on what effect, if any, the still-developing U.S.and E.U. tariff situation could have on its launch plans.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ahead of the launch, &lt;i&gt;Farm Journal&lt;/i&gt; went to Madison, Wisc., to kick the tires and learn all about the new machines. The F8 and F9 harvesters we viewed and climbed into were the first finished production units off the factory line. Deere says several units will be field tested with U.S. customers ahead of the full fall launch.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We’re really excited about the new cab and the technology we’ve added to these machines like central tire inflation, ground speed automation and the new kernel processing units,” says Bergen Nelson, go-to-market manager, combines and forage harvesters.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Here’s some of what we learned about the new forage harvesters:&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;Inoculant Dosing System 2.0:&lt;/b&gt; New on both the F8 and F9, a high-volume 85 gallon inoculant tank and integrated pump allow the user to accurately adjust silage inoculant dosage rates from the G5 display in the cab. The system is easy to pump and prime as well with the touch of a button located at the rear of the machine.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Ground Speed Automation:&lt;/b&gt; This cruise control-like option reads RPMs and throttles the harvester up or down based on crop conditions. For example, harvesting corn at higher moisture levels will increase power output, so the machine will automatically slow down to ensure it doesn’t plug up or do a sub-optimal job harvesting. This feature comes standard on all base models for both series and does not require a yearly subscription unlock or per-acre fee.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Pro Touch Harvest:&lt;/b&gt; Another new feature within the G5 display allows the operator to shift the machine from road transport mode to harvest mode in a single click. It can also be used to quickly engage AutoTrac and ground speed automation once the operator arrives at the edge of field.&lt;br&gt;

An integrated winch and internal rail mounting system makes switching the machine from corn forage to hay forage in the field quick and simple. The number signifies each KP unit’s roll diameter width in millimeters. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Both KPs will go in both machines and have four different roll options depending on how aggressive the dairyman wants their end feed quality to be,” says Shane Campbell, product marketing manager, forage harvesters.&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;Integrated Harvest Lab 3000:&lt;/b&gt; This on-demand constituent sensing module pulls over 4,000 samples per second with +/- 2% accuracy, and John Deere says it can save dairy operations time and money versus collecting and sending samples to a lab. The sensor tech (available as an add-on option) enables accurate measurement and documentation of dry matter, starch, protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber for both harvested forage and manure. The data can be stored, organized and shared via Deere’s Operations Center. Within Operations Center, users can take geo-referenced data and build out spatial starch content — as well as moisture and protein — maps for hybrid selection and fertility management. Because if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Active Fill Control 3.0:&lt;/b&gt; Using sensors and cameras on the grain spout, this tech feature automatically detects the trailer or grain cart next to the forage harvester and begins filling it with a preselected fill strategy. This reduces the number of times an operator has to adjust the spout manually and also lessens fatigue and neck strain, according to Deere.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;b&gt;New Operating Modes:&lt;/b&gt; Several of the models within the F9 Series offer what Deere is calling its “Engine Power Plus” feature — which gives a sizeable horsepower boost when the machines senses it needs a little extra chopping power to the harvesting head. There is also an ECO mode that can be toggled on when the machines don’t need the extra torque.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Ease-Of-Access:&lt;/b&gt; Both models have side and rear panels that easily open to grant full access to the inner workings of the machines, making the new forage harvesters much easier to service and maintain without a lift or other heavy specialized equipment. The machine is setup so techs and mechanically-minded farmers will not have to climb underneath it to perform daily maintenance.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“At the end of the day, we know it’s all about the cow, and these machines will put out quality feed,” Nelson says. “We’ll have these out at the farm shows this summer, including Farm Progress Show, World Ag Expo, World Dairy Expo and the U.S. Custom Harvesters Convention.”&lt;br&gt;

        “The biggest driver right now is total numbers sold, which is way off from last year and from 2023,” Machinery Pete says on the latest episode of the Moving Iron podcast. “We’ll see what happens for the rest of 2025, but total volume is down and we see the same thing with late-model tractors — there just hasn’t been as many sold at auction. But the older machines are holding their value a little better (than late-model machines), that’s the bottom line.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Pete’s fellow podcast host, Casey Seymour, thinks one of the biggest issues holding used farm equipment sales down today are high interest rates. Dealers with high inventories are stuck with big interest payments for the machines stuck on the lot, which gives them pause when it comes time to bring in new machines or pursue more trade-ins. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I think a lot of dealers were hoping we’d start to see the buying activity pick up. We’re seeing some activity, but it’s just not fast enough. That flywheel’s not turning fast enough,” he says. “It’s just starting to turn a little bit, but the speed and velocity dealers look for isn’t there yet.”&lt;br&gt;

        Pete and Seymour both sense a strong fall harvest could be just the thing to pull more buyers back into the market. Pete thinks the current buying activity hiatus will be shorter and sharper than the one that took hold during COVID.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We’ve basically hit a stabilization point. If we see another big push to auction at the end of the year, I’m not 100% convinced we’ll see a huge uptick or downtick in pricing,” Seymour adds.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;b&gt;Know Your Locals&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br&gt;Regionalism is everywhere in farming, and it certainly extends to the world of farm equipment. Farmers in the open-acre, pivot-ringed fields of the Nebraska panhandle — where Seymour lives — have different machinery needs than farmers in the gently rolling Kansas foothills.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;If you’re a used equipment dealer, Seymour says you must understand the needs of the local farmer and have a good feel for how many regionally configured machines you can move in your area. It also helps to have connections in the heavy equipment transport world so machines you sell via online auction can get to a farmer a few states over without a giant transportation fee. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The chances of that 25' variable tillage rig selling around Cheyenne or Wells County are pretty slim, unless it’s a smaller outfit,” says Aaron Fintel, used equipment specialist with 21&lt;sup&gt;st&lt;/sup&gt; Century Equipment. “I always try to be dialed in enough that I know exactly where that thing is going to sell. Maybe it came out of Illinois, and I sold that same guy a really nice 40' rig.         &lt;h4&gt;Each year, Top Producer recognizes a producer under the age of 35 who demonstrates excellence in the business of farming, specifically marketing, finance, technology and family and employee relations. Congratulations to Martin Angus, the 2022 recipient of the Tomorrow’s Top Producer Horizon Award. Brendan and Elaine Martin were recognized at a &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.agweb.com/news/business/succession-planning/watch-2022-top-producer-awards-banquet-live" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;ceremony&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt; held Feb. 14 during Top Producer Summit in Nashville.&lt;/h4&gt;
    
        &lt;hr/&gt;
    
        Brendan Martin learned early on that cows equal cash flow. He started building his herd in high school with the goal of one day owning his own farm.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Growing up in the Shenandoah Valley near Mt. Solon, Va., Brendan began building equity and his farming dream through heifers, custom hay bailing and hard work. His reputation attracted the attention of a neighbor who was looking to slow down. The neighbor wanted a young, energetic farmer to purchase his cow herd and lease his 280-acre farm. Brendan stepped up to the plate.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Today, Brendan’s diversified and multi-faceted operation is a team effort with his wife, Elaine. In addition to their 280-acre home base, they lease around 600 acres of pasture and farmland. They raise corn, alfalfa, small grains and hay, and their cattle operation includes a registered Angus and commercial Angus herd, 210 fed cattle and 1,030 feeder calves. In the past couple of years, they have invested in their cattle facilities to increase cow comfort and feeding efficiency.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In 2019, the Martins added Blue Cedar Beef, a direct-to-consumer beef business. They ship beef all over the nation every week of the year. They also do custom mowing and litter spreading and recently added a trucking business. Their team includes two full-time and two part-time employees. Brendan also owns a large animal mobile veterinary practice, Valley Herd Health. Elaine specializes in record keeping, payroll and financial management for the farm, as well as keeping a close eye on the cattle herd.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As the Martins look toward the future, their goal is not to have the most cows or acres.         &lt;block id="Main"&gt; BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts is being sued by 13 other states that claim a voter-approved law to ban the sale of eggs and other food products from farm animals that are confined in overly restrictive cages is unconstitutional.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; The states, led by Indiana, filed the lawsuit with the U.S. Supreme Court last week. It follows another action filed by more than a dozen states earlier in the month against California, which has a similar law.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; The 2016 ballot question in Massachusetts was backed by more than 77 percent of voters. It requires, among other things, that only cage-free eggs be sold in the state by 2022, regardless of where the eggs were produced.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; The law backed by animal protection groups defines an overly restrictive cage as one that would prevent an egg-laying hen, breeding pig or calf raised for veal from standing up, turning around or fully extending its limbs.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; In their compliant, the states claim that Massachusetts is attempting to impose its own regulatory standards on farmers in other states, in violation of the commerce clause of the U.S. Constitution.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; The plaintiffs claim farmers “will have to increase their production costs by decreasing flock or herd size, investing in new infrastructure, and undertaking contentious zoning approval processes.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; “If they do not, they must forego completely any sales in Massachusetts or to national distributors that may resell products in Massachusetts,” according to the suit.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey’s office said it had received the lawsuit and was reviewing it, but had no additional comment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Paul Shapiro, vice president of policy for the Humane Society of the United States, said opponents of the law are “grasping at straws” and he expects the legal challenge to fail.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; “Massachusetts has an interest in protecting its consumers from inhumane and substandard production of eggs,” said Shapiro, who noted that the state is applying an even standard by requiring the same conditions for housing animals at its own farms.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin also signed on to the lawsuit. The states said it filed the action directly with the Supreme Court because it has jurisdiction over lawsuits between states.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Critics of the cage-free laws also argue they result in price increases for consumers. The Missouri-led suit filed Dec. 4 against California claims that state’s law, which took effect in 2015, has cost U.S. consumers up to $350 million annually in higher egg costs.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Shapiro said most studies have predicted the Massachusetts law would add only a penny or two to the cost of an egg.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; Copyright 2017, The Associated Press&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; &lt;/block&gt;
