      <title>Mental Health in the Pork Industry: Redefining Grit with Maddison Caldwell</title>

        In the stock show world, Maddison Caldwell was the blueprint of a firstborn overachiever: disciplined, organized and a perfectionist. But while she thrived in the black-and-white rules of life, the “gray areas” nearly cost her everything.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In college, she took a mandatory psychology class and realized she related to many of the topics they talked about. Caldwell sought help from her primary care physician, not knowing at the time that specialists existed for what she was feeling.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After months of increasing dosages, she reached a medical ceiling. When her doctor told her it was the maximum dose and ‘sent her on her way,’ she felt she had run out of options. Within five months, she attempted to end her life twice.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Private Pain to Public Hope&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.porkbusiness.com/news/industry/her-own-hand-farm-girls-miraculous-journey-death-hope" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;&lt;b&gt;When she shared her personal battle in January 2022&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        , her story stopped being just hers. It became a shared common ground for others fighting silent battles.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“As soon as the article came out, it was like the floodgates opened,” she says. “All of a sudden, complete strangers – even people who weren’t involved with agriculture – of all ages from across the country reached out.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Although it wasn’t easy to have the most painful moments of her life become table conversation, she doesn’t regret the decision to share it with others.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This story came out right around the time I was starting my career,” Caldwell says. “I was reporting to an executive at a large company, and one of his coworkers on the executive team asked him, ‘Have you Googled her?’”&lt;br&gt;

        She will never forget when he asked her about it and the conversation that followed.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“He was quite a bit older than I am, and from a generation that didn’t talk about these things,” Caldwell adds. “It was a really uncomfortable and really hard conversation.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But she believes those conversations are more important than ever.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Doing things like that bring us one step closer,” Caldwell says. “I hope I never lose the drive to keep being uncomfortable in order to help people.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Redefining Grit in Agriculture&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Agriculture is making progress when it comes to talking about mental health and recognizing the importance of conversation.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I don’t think we are great at sitting in that uncomfortable state,” she says. “We want to fix it and move on, or minimize it, or work harder and stay busy doing anything that allows us to avoid facing the reality of it.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She believes it’s time to redefine “grit” in agriculture.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“In my opinion, grit means being honest with ourselves,” Caldwell explains. “I think it means coming to the realization that we need to reach out for help sometimes. It’s about the courage to be vulnerable.”&lt;br&gt;

        She also challenges the industry to stop equating grit with silence.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You cannot pour from an empty cup,” she warns.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In an industry that prizes working until the job is done, Caldwell says the ultimate display of grit is the courage to admit when you’re running on empty.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Warning Signs&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        With one in five U.S. adults facing mental health conditions and one in five high school students considering suicide, Caldwell isn’t shy about offering advice now.&lt;br&gt;

        “One of the things I did was bury myself in work, in being productive, in not taking any time to just stop and ‘smell the roses,’” Caldwell says. “If you notice people withdrawing from activities that they would have once loved, pay attention. If they’re exhausted all the time, if they’re not talking as much, if they use the words ‘I’m fine’ all too often, or if they are pouring so much into other people at their own expense, those could be signs.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;Looking back, she admits it’s hard to recognize herself during those years. Her mindset is much different now. She challenges people to stop shying away from asking hard questions.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“People often think if you say the word suicide, it’s going to put that idea in someone’s mind,” Caldwell says. “Let me be clear that this thought was already in my head when I was struggling. I don’t know what would have happened if someone just blankly asked me if I was thinking about suicide, because that’s not something people talk about.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Healing Is Not a Straight Line&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Today, Caldwell lives by a quote she read early in her recovery process: “When we recover loudly, we keep others from dying quietly.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I will shout my story to the rooftops if it means that one person feels less alone in how they’re feeling,” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Healing looks different for everyone, and everyone needs different tools, Caldwell explains. She compares it to going to Starbucks to get a cup of coffee and then realizing you don’t like it.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Does it mean that you’re going to stop going to Starbucks altogether, or, even worse, stop drinking coffee altogether?” she says. “Absolutely not. Sometimes you just need to go to different places or add in a little sugar here and there based on personal preference. I feel like my healing journey is like that.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Caldwell says the “gray areas” are still terrifying at times. But she’s learned that true bravery is figuring out how to thrive even when a clear plan isn’t visible. Healing hasn’t removed the stressors in her life, but it has increased her capacity to handle them.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The one thing that has changed in the past six years is her willingness to have uncomfortable conversations and ask hard questions. She is grateful for the family, friends and professionals that support her in doing this.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Transparency looks different now,” she says. “I can text my mom to just say, ‘It’s not a good day today.’ That’s something I never would have done because I didn’t feel comfortable saying that.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Stay Beyond the Crisis&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Her message to farm families is simple: don’t just show up for the crisis; show up for the recovery.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Stay to see them thrive,” Caldwell says. “Stay to hear people like my mom say that ‘the light has returned’ in their eyes.”&lt;br&gt;

Vicki Janisch sees a canvas and a way to stay rooted in dairy, even after her family stepped away from milking cows.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In the last few years, the Wisconsin native has built a one‑of‑a‑kind career as a professional cheese carver. Her work has shown up at weddings, college sports announcements, major dairy events and even tied into the NFL Draft.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But if you ask her, it’s less about the spotlight and more about staying connected to the industry that shaped her.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Day Carving Found Her&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The idea first took shape during a normal day at the office. Janisch was working at Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin when Sarah Kaufmann, a skilled cheese carver from California, stopped in to carve for a project.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Curious about how it all worked, Janisch asked if she could come over and see the process for herself. Watching the carving up close stopped her in her tracks. Seeing the tools, the technique and the transformation from a simple block of cheese into a detailed sculpture lit a spark inside her that she couldn’t quite shake.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I fan girled hard,” Janisch says with a laugh. “I was just in awe of what she could do and what she starts with. I thought, ‘This is the coolest thing ever! You get to carve cheese?’ I mean, cheese already tastes good, but now you get to put your artistic spin on it. That’s sounds like the best job in the world.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Watching Kaufmann work, Janisch began asking all sorts of questions: What tools do you use? What cheese do you use? How do you turn this into a business?&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After a steady stream of questions, Kaufmann smiled and offered a simple solution.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“[Sarah] goes, ‘Well, why don’t you come and carve with me tomorrow?’” Janisch recalls. “It was my birthday, and I had already taken the day off. So, I thought, ‘Yeah, why not? I’ll go.’”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The next day, Janisch spent several hours carving alongside Kaufmann and quickly realized how absorbing the craft could be.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You can really lose track of time when you’re doing it,” Janisch says. “It’s such a fun medium to work with, and I loved just getting the chance to try it for myself.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That night, she went home and ordered her own tools.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I didn’t really tell anybody that I was doing it,” Janisch laughs. “I just wanted to carve for fun. I ordered some clay carving tools off Amazon and played around with some cheese I had in the fridge. I had no idea it was going to escalate as quickly as it did.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        After that first experience, carving became something she kept returning to. Before long, friends and family started to hear about her new hobby. One of those conversations turned into an unexpected opportunity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“A friend of mine came to me and said, ‘Hey, I know you’ve been doing this. Do you want to do my niece’s wedding? Would you be up for making a cheese wedding cake?’” Janisch remembers. “And I’m like, as my first project, this sounds awesome. But I have no idea what I’m doing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After saying yes, she sourced a 40 lb. block of cheddar and some wheels and built a tiered cheese “cake.” The display quickly became a major hit with guests and showed Janisch just how much excitement a carved cheese centerpiece could bring to an event.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;“As things kind of progressed and friends and families started hearing what I did, I started to get more requests,” Janisch says. “It was all through word of mouth, and the list of projects continued to grow.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As more projects came her way, Janisch’s late-night hobby grew into something bigger, and with it came a larger time commitment. After a while, it became clear if Janisch wanted to keep carving, she would need to make some changes.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;A Leap of Faith and an LLC&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        “Two years ago, I made a big leap of faith and decided I needed to change my routine,” Janisch says. “I have two really active kids who I wanted to spend more time with, and I was ready to create a new path for myself.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After some reflection, Janisch left her 9-to-5 job to launch her own business, Janisch Creative, where she works as a creative and digital communications director. That change gave her the flexibility she needed while staying connected to communications, and her cheese carving business became the creative outlet that balanced everything else.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Originally, when she made the big jump, she promised her husband the cheese carving projects would stay small. But now, she jokes her definition of small has changed.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I told him, ‘It won’t get out of hand.’ But I think our perspective of small keeps changing,” she laughs. “But it’s been so fun doing all of this as a family. Having my kids around to see what their mom can do has been pretty cool.”&lt;br&gt;

        Janisch now runs her cheese carving business with a producer’s mindset: Respect the product, respect the people behind it and don’t waste what they’ve made.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“When you think about the craftsmanship that goes into cheese, it’s already so good on its own,” she says. “And then I’m blessed to be able to put my creative spin and artistic stamp on it.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But it also means she has to carefully manage the product to keep the cheese fresh. That started with her first business purchase.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“My first business expense was a refrigerator,” she laughs. “Most Midwesterners have a beer fridge. We have a cheese fridge, and it’s stacked with insane amounts of cheese just waiting to be carved.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While carving the cheese, she also had to figure out what to do with the scraps. It was her firm belief nothing should go to waste.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        &lt;br&gt;“When I’m carving for an event, I’ll box up some of the scraps for people to eat on a charcuterie board or for the company to utilize,” she says. “But if I’m doing a living carving, those scraps can’t be eaten. So, I bring them back home and feed them to my chickens.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Of course, mistakes still happen, and sometimes a piece of the sculpture doesn’t turn out as planned. Luckily, the cheese makes for a tasty medium to work with.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“If I mess up, we eat it,” she laughs. “There is no waste. We just have grilled cheese for a month.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As her carving career continues to grow, Janisch has made a point to stay connected to the local cheese crafters who inspire part of her work.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I’ve made it a really solid goal to work with cheese companies in Wisconsin,” she says. “I worked with over 20 cheese companies last year, and I’ve gotten to form personal relationships with those who are making the cheese.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Those relationships have also helped her learn an important lesson. When it comes to carving, the type of cheese matters just as much as the design.&lt;br&gt;

        Even after years of experience, not every cheese behaves the same. Different textures and inclusions means Janisch has to adjust her approach.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There are some cheeses that are more difficult to work with than others, but I just have to adjust how I handle it,” she says. “The tools I use are different for different cheeses. For some of the flavored cheeses, like pepper jack, where there’s items mixed in, you have to handle things differently.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That’s where her relationships with Wisconsin cheese makers becomes critical. Texture, moisture and aging all influence whether a design holds its shape or begins to crumble.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Cheese makers can make low moisture and aged cheeses. But if they’re aged too long, they don’t work as well for carving,” she explains. “I’ve found my sweet spot is usually a 90-day aged cheddar.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Having conversations with cheese makers allows her to plan each project with the right product from the start.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Because these cheese makers have it so dialed in, we can talk the science behind the cheese that I need. I’m not having to source just a random block of cheddar. I can go and find cheeses that I know are going to hold up for the project.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Fortunately, Janisch has yet to meet a cheese she doesn’t like and is willing to give just about anything a try.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Blue cheese is on my bucket list,” she laughs. “But I don’t think I’m ready to chase after it just yet.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Over time, finding her favorites has become less about a single variety and more about matching the right cheese to the right project. Whatever the choice, she’s thinking about both the carver and the consumer.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        While cheese carving has become a new adventure for Janisch, her connection to the dairy industry runs deep. She grew up on her family’s dairy farm in southern Wisconsin, participating in 4‑H and showing animals at local fairs. That hands‑on experience and dirty‑boot roots instilled in her a natural sense of advocacy and a pride in the industry that now helps her connect with consumers through her cheese carving.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I love having the opportunity to tie it back to the farmers,” she says. “Growing up on a dairy farm, I understand that once you ship milk, it becomes products like cheese. But a lot of times, farmers don’t talk about what happens after that.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For Janisch, that connection between the farm and the finished product is an important part of the story she hopes her work helps tell.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Consumers want to know that they’re supporting dairy farmers, and they do that through the products those farmers help produce. I can talk to consumers about the farmers, the cheese and the cheese makers,” Janisch explains. “It’s one thing to be able to talk about cheese carving, but I’m able to tell more of the dairy story when I go to some of these events.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Her role, as she sees it, is to bridge the gap between the people who make the milk and the people who enjoy the finished product. And even though her family no longer milks cows every day, Janisch says cheese carving keeps her anchored to a larger purpose.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This lets me be part of something bigger than myself,” she says. “When we were dairy farming, it wasn’t just about our farm, it was part of a larger story. Cheese carving helps me stay connected to that.”&lt;br&gt;

        Kerri and Rob Weber didn’t inherit their legacy — they rented it, one barn at a time. Both grew up with a passion for cows — meeting, fittingly, while showing cattle — but starting a dairy from scratch in the 21&lt;sup&gt;st&lt;/sup&gt; century is a feat many call impossible.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You’re not going to start at the top,” Weber reflects. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For eight years, the couple operated as nomadic dairymen, renting tie-stall facilities and moving their growing herd as opportunities arose. They lived by a strict philosophy: You have to go through all four seasons before you make a judgment call. They crunched numbers on $16 milk and $20 milk, knowing their break-even points by heart.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Their break came when they returned to the farm where Rob had worked as a teenager. They entered a partnership with brothers Wayne and Brad Beidel. It was a phased transition — a lifeline for a young couple looking for a permanent home for their Holstein, Jersey and Brown Swiss cattle. By the time the first brother, Wayne, retired, Rustik Dairy LLC was formed. They were four years into the second phase of the transition when the world stopped turning.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;107 Days of Uncertainty&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        The day of the injury was like any other until Rob walked into the barn office, spoke Weber’s name, and collapsed. While he lay in a coma for four weeks, Weber’s life became a grueling marathon. She was the mother of three young children at the time — twins who were only 18 months old and a five-year-old daughter.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For 107 days, Weber balanced the sterile silence of hospital hallways with the demanding noise of a 180-cow dairy. She stayed by Rob’s side for nearly every one of those days, yet she never let the farm slip. She did morning milkings when she could, managed the books from hospital chairs and coordinated a team of part-time help that stepped up to become full-time heroes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One day at a time” became her motto.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“One day was one more day that I kept Rob alive,” she says.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Choice in the ICU&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Perhaps the most defining moment of Weber’s strength occurred four weeks into Rob’s stay in the ICU. The second partner, Brad, was ready to finalize his retirement. Weber was faced with a choice that would break most people: sell the cows and walk away to focus on her family, or sign the papers to buy out the partnership and take over the entire operation alone.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She chose the farm.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I was convinced he was coming home,” Weber says. “And I knew he couldn’t come home to an empty barn. He needed something to fight for. If the farm was gone, he wouldn’t have that fight anymore.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;A week after Rob finally returned home, Weber officially took over the management of the entire dairy. She became the sole decision-maker, the lead manager and the primary caregiver for both her husband and their children.&lt;br&gt;

        Today, Rustik Dairy is not just surviving; it is thriving. The herd of 180 cows is averaging 24,000 pounds of milk with 1,000 pounds of fat and 800 pounds of protein — a remarkable feat given that 40% of the herd consists of color breeds.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But the real success is measured in the small moments. Rob is a walking medical miracle. Though he faces mental challenges, fatigue and the need for ongoing surgeries, he is back on the farm. Weber has integrated technology to help him navigate his new reality. They installed the Topcon feed app, which uses color-coded scales and sounds to help Rob mix feed — a task he once did by memory but now performs with the help of digital eyes.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Farmers don’t forget what they’re doing,” Weber notes. “It’s muscle memory. He can still drive a tractor better than I can.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;To make life more manageable, Weber moved the calf-raising operation. They built a new calf barn right outside the house so the children can play among the hutches while Weber and Rob work. It allows the family to stay together, fulfilling the dream they had before the accident: raising their children in the barn.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;The Power of the Dairy Community&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        When Kerri reflects on the past year and half, she doesn’t just talk about the struggle; she talks about the silver linings. She speaks of the Amish and Mennonite neighbors who showed up to feed calves without being asked. She speaks of the dairy community that sent diapers, clothing and two meals a week for over a year.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You don’t have that anywhere else. That love and support... you don’t see that outside of the dairy community,” she says, noting the incredible importance of their families who pitched in from Day 1 to help in anyway they could. “We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our families.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Even the farm’s nutritionists and veterinarians became part of the inner circle, understanding the “Rustik story” so well that Weber didn’t have to explain her weaknesses — they simply jumped in to fill the gaps.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Looking Forward: One Day at a Time&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        As spring approaches, the family continues to focus on gratitude. Weber continues to manage the herd with a focus on component growth and efficiency, but her primary objective remains unchanged: keeping the family together.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The journey hasn’t been easy. There are setbacks, like Rob’s shunt revision surgery, and the difficult mentalities that a brain injury can sometimes leave behind. But Weber finds joy in the simple things: a walk through the freestyle barn, the sight of their daughters holding bottles for calves, and the fact Rob is there to see it.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I look at life differently now,” Weber says. “You don’t realize how quickly life can be taken for granted until it’s nearly gone. I’m just thankful for what I have today, even when the circumstances aren’t what I expected them to be.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Kerri Weber is more than a dairy farmer. She is a testament to the fact that a farm is held together not just by fences and gates, but by the determined spirit of the women who refuse to let the dream die.         It was a one-minute spot that captured hearts on Super Bowl Sunday. 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBnLXlvrNng" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Lay’s “Last Harvest” commercial&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
         told the story of a farm family passing the torch from one generation to the next, rooted in memories, hard work and the bond between parent and child. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While the story in the Super Bowl ad was fictional, it was inspired by the real-life experiences of third-generation potato producer Tom Neumiller and his daughter Katie Floming, the fourth generation working alongside him at Neumiller Farms in Savanna, Ill.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;A Story That Hits Home&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Floming, operations manager at Neumiller Farms, recalls watching the commercial for the first time. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I was so touched. It really hit home for me,” she says. “Growing up, if I wanted to see my parents, I had to go to the farm because they were always working. That’s where we spent our family time, quick meals, then back to work. I loved it. There are no complaints there. Being present at the farm was everything.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The commercial’s depiction of a young girl chasing her parents through potato fields and learning the ropes mirrored Katie’s own childhood experiences. She laughs as she recalls one particular scene.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt; “When she came outside wearing white tennis shoes to work, that hit home. I remember showing up in sandals, and my dad would just shake his head. I had to go home and change,” Floming says.. &lt;br&gt;

        For Neumiller, seeing their family’s life portrayed on such a massive stage was humbling. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Farmers don’t usually end up in Super Bowl commercials, but this is very nice,” he says. “For that one-minute ad, they captured a farm family and our legacy all in one. It was just amazing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Floming adds that the story resonated with many viewers beyond their family. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It’s very relatable. People would come up at the Super Bowl and say, ‘My grandfather was in that situation’ or ‘My family didn’t have the option to pass it on.’ It’s a story that connects with most people,” she says. &lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Farming in Northern Illinois: Unique Challenges&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Neumiller Farms isn’t a typical potato operation. Neumiller explains growing potatoes in northern Illinois requires creativity, considering they are the lone family growing potatoes in northern Illinois. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We’re the only ones in the area,” Neumiller says. “You need good water and light, sandy soil. Illinois has pockets of sand, so we’ve become a very mobile farm. We have one farm 150 miles away, another 30 miles south and another 15 miles north. It allows us to manage the light soils and adequate water we need.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Floming now manages daily operations, but Neumiller remains deeply involved. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I’m old school. I want to be involved in everything,” he says. “I talk to the managers every day. I get here early and stay around, maybe too long, but I stay involved in everything.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The family works side by side, literally. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Floming says: “Our desks are right next to each other. We’re constantly feeding off each other, and we always know what’s going on.” &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Neumiller smiles, adding: “My wife’s on the other side, and we’ve been married 54 years. She’s been involved in the business from way back.” &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“He doesn’t get a break,” Floming quips.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;Passing the Torch&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Though Neumiller hopes for a few more harvests, Floming embraces the responsibility of continuing the family legacy. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I’m very thankful to still be farming alongside my dad,” she says. “He’s grown the farm, but it’s my responsibility to keep it going, for our family, our employees and our community. I want to do the best I can to preserve our foundation while building for the future.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;A plaque on the wall of Neumiller Farms signifies seven decades of producing potatoes for Frito-Lay, a partnership that made their story perfect for Lay’s Super Bowl spotlight.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Neumiller reflects on the broader significance: “All of us farmers, we’re not usually in the spotlight. But it’s an honor to show the connection between soil, farming and the food we produce. Sustainability, passing on the farm, doing the job right — it all matters. Our story continues, and that’s what I hope to pass on.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;A Last Harvest That Connected Us All &lt;/h2&gt;
    
        As Lay’s “Last Harvest” reminded viewers on Super Bowl Sunday, the foods we enjoy come from real families working the land, generation after generation.       <title>Women in Agriculture Award Winner: Helle Ruddenklau</title>

        “We’re quite independent. We’re not necessarily doing what everybody else is doing.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That motto has led to success for Amity, Ore., farmer and 2026 Woman in Agriculture Award winner Helle Ruddenklau. This award is sponsored by ProFarmer.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;An “Unconventional” Start&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Ruddenklau began her farming career in an unconventional way. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I actually immigrated to the United States with my family, and my dad bought a farm about 20 miles away from here,” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While attending Oregon State University in crop science and on an exchange program in New Zealand, Ruddenklau met her future husband, Bruce. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I convinced Bruce to come back to Oregon with me, and then we bought the farm here and got started pretty early,” she says. “We were in our early 20s when we bought the farm.” &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Bruce Ruddenklau, co-owner of Ruddenklau Farms, jokes he never imagined he’d meet a girl from Denmark and end up being a farmer in America. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“1992 was our first crop year, so been going at it for 33, coming on 34 years,” Bruce says.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Oregon Climate Accelerates Growth&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Today, Ruddenklau Farms has grown to nearly 1,100 acres with a diverse cropping mix. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“About half the farm is grass seed, turf type grasses, perennial ryegrass and tall fescue [and] goes for lawns, soccer fields, parks, things like that, some roadside edges and things,” Ruddenklau says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She says the climate is also perfect for growing specialty seed crops, all marketed under contract including peas and radishes. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Sometimes clover seed,” Ruddenklau says. “We grow wheat, we grow something called metafoam, which is an oil seed crop, and then we also have some spring vegetable crops. We grow sweet corn and green beans, and a few years ago, we put in hazelnuts.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Challenges Abound&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Two of their biggest challenges, according to Ruddenklau, have been financial undercapacity and weed resistance. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Eventually that led us to using no-till so that we didn’t bury those seeds every year,” she says. “We left them on the surface, and then we could spray them out with a roundup and then would come in with a spring crop that really set us ahead, trying to get ahead of those weeds.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Irrigation was also valuable because it allowed them to grow specialty crops and break the weed resistance cycle through rotation. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“So, this farm that we bought was originally just dry land, and we put in an irrigation pond back in 2007,” Ruddenklau says. “And that changed completely the types of crops we could grow or the mix of crops we could grow, and that helps as well.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Growing Wheat for Soy Sauce&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Nearly seven years ago, Ruddenklau says the local economic development organization also got them involved in a valuable niche market. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“SEDCOR reached out to us to ask if we would be interested in maybe trying out some hard red spring wheat,” she says. “There was a local company, Yamasa Soy Sauce Company, that were looking for local production. Yamasa is willing to pay a premium for having a local source of wheat for the hybrid spring wheat.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Financial Management Role&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Ruddenklau’s main role is the financial management and farm compliance but says she and Bruce have an equal partnership.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I run the office and do everything that’s needed there, and then I help out on the farm as needed,” she says. “I run the combine during the summer. I can run all the equipment.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Bruce agrees they make a great team. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This is about business acumen and the ability to analyze numbers and analyze situations and look at a broad sense of things, and Helle contributes a tremendous amount to our business with that,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;And more than that, Bruce says Ruddenklau’s can-do attitude is the true secret to their success. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We went through some times in our early career to where, from my standpoint, it was pretty demoralizing,” he says. “I probably would have walked away from it, but thanks to Helle, and thanks to that commitment and conviction to see it through, we’re still here.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Engagement in Agriculture Critical&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Ruddenklau says it’s important to be engaged and is involved in various farm groups, and Bruce says she spreads herself thin. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“When she’s asked to do something, to serve on a board or advisory committee or whatever, the word no doesn’t come into play, and she always has this can-do, will-make-it-work attitude,” he says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ruddenklau often testifies on ag issues at the state legislature and for years has been on the Oregon State Extension Service advisory board. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We benefit a lot from Extension,” she says. “Their research benefits us, so whatever we can do to help them, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;&lt;b&gt;Advocate for Agriculture&lt;/b&gt; &lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Ruddenklau has always been an advocate for agriculture serving in Oregon Women in Agriculture for nearly 40 years and shares farming activities with consumers via Facebook.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We need to tell them what we’re doing in modern agriculture,” she says. “Why we’re doing the things we do. How we are making better crops with less environmental impact and to tell them that we’re really responsible stewards of our natural resources and we’re doing a good job growing the crops for them. So it’s important for ag to tell that story.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Ruddenklau is proud to be a female farmer, and Bruce says she’s a wonderful role model for others. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“She shows that farming is an equal opportunity career whether you be male or female,” he says. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        Rice country is hurting, badly.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Prices have collapsed to levels not seen in four decades, while production costs climb beyond $1,000 an acre. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, rice farmers are projected to lose more than $360 per acre this year. For many operations, that kind of math pushes losses deeper into the red and pushes tough decisions closer to reality.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That financial pressure was front and center at the White House last week as President Donald Trump unveiled his Farmer Bridge Payments, but what captured national attention wasn’t just policy — it was a farmer.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Her words, delivered candidly and unscripted on live television, put a human face on the crisis gripping America’s rice farms and mills.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That producer is Meryl Kennedy.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;A Family Business Rooted in Rice&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        Kennedy is the youngest of four daughters, carrying forward a family operation that stretches back nearly six decades. Her father began farming rice in the late 1960s, and over time the family expanded beyond production into milling and value-added markets. That vertical integration gives Kennedy a front-row view of how price volatility affects not just growers, but entire supply chains.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“So I’m actually second generation,” Kennedy says. “My father started as a farmer back in the late 1960s, and we continue to take rice from the farm to a finished product today.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;After returning home from college, Kennedy helped oversee the startup of the family’s rice mill in 2012. The mill steadily grew, sourcing rice from roughly 60 farm families who relied on the operation as a stable market outlet. For those growers, the health of the mill is closely tied to the health of the farm economy.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We actually mill rice, distribute it to many large companies throughout the U.S. and internationally,” Kennedy says. “But then my sisters and I have our own brand called Four Sisters that we launch about five years ago.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As president and CEO of Kennedy Rice Mill and co-founder of Four Sisters Rice, Kennedy balances brand development, export logistics and farmer relationships. That role places her at the intersection of domestic agriculture and global trade, a perspective that proved pivotal when she was invited to Washington.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;An Unexpected Moment in the Spotlight&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        Kennedy was one of eight farmers invited to participate in the White House roundtable on Dec. 8. Like many producers attending policy discussions, she expected a private conversation focused on data and feedback. What she did not know until moments before entering the room is that the discussion will be broadcast live.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“And my sisters and I, because there are four of us — I’m the youngest of four daughters — started our own rice brand a few years ago to just tell the story of American agriculture that hadn’t really been told before,” Kennedy told Trump and the White House Cabinet members who attended the farmer roundtable that day. “But I wish I was here under better terms.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As the conversation turned to the financial outlook for rice, Kennedy did not sugarcoat the situation. Her remarks reflect what growers have been telling lenders and suppliers for months: Margins are gone, and losses are mounting.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I know that prices right now are the lowest they’ve been in over 40 years, so we’re going to struggle,” she continued. “We’re going to max out on our payments probably, so that’s something that I know those in Congress can potentially help us with to change.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Kennedy says the magnitude of the moment did not fully register until after the cameras are rolling. Sitting beside the president, she realized she was speaking not just for her own operation, but for growers across the country.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“In fact, it still seems like it is a dream, I’m going to be honest with you,” she says. “At the beginning of this year, I had a feeling that it was going to be a very difficult year. But it really wasn’t until midway through the year that we just saw a drastic drop in prices that has continued month after month.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;Farmers Asked Her to Speak Up&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        Kennedy says her decision to engage directly with the administration was driven by the growers who supply her mill. As conditions worsen, those farmers began urging her to use her industry position to push for action.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“And so it really is my farmers urging me a month ago to write a letter to the president,” she says. “To explain the situation to him, to urge him to help our farmers.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That outreach, Kennedy says, marked a turning point. What began as a letter quickly became a national conversation.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We wrote that letter, and look what the president does,” she says. “He responded.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Kennedy explains the collapse in rice prices cannot be understood without looking beyond U.S. borders. Rice, she notes, is not just another commodity; it is a staple food for much of the world, making global market dynamics especially complex.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Rice is a global commodity. It is the means of survival for most of the planet on a daily basis,” she says. “I truly mean it that rice is more of a currency than it is a commodity.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;While the U.S. ranks fifth in the world for rice exports, Kennedy says heavy subsidization and overproduction by major exporting nations distort markets and undermine U.S. competitiveness.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“And what has been happening is that really since COVID, there’s been truly an overproduction,” she says. “Then we over-subsidize in these nations and then dump rice globally across the world.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;A Candid Exchange With a Call to Action&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        That backdrop set the stage for one of the most striking moments of the roundtable, as Kennedy directly addressed concerns about dumping and unfair trade practices. The exchange unfolded live, capturing the attention of producers watching from home.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“And we do believe that countries are dumping rice into this country today,” Kennedy said during the roundtable at the White House. “We’ve never seen imports this great.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;When pressed for specifics, she named the countries she believes are contributing to the problem.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“India, Thailand, even China into Puerto Rico,” she said. “Puerto Rico used to be one of the largest markets for U.S. rice. We haven’t shipped rice into Puerto Rico in years.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;As Kennedy listed off the countries, Trump turned to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and asked him to write the countries down. Kennedy said the moment was monumental.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“None of it is scripted,” she says. “He really called me to action, and I responded.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“When he turns to Secretary Bessent and asks him to write these countries down, it really is a powerful moment,” she adds. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;Aid Helps — But It’s Not Enough&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        The roundtable featuring farmers on Dec. 8 was intended to announce Farmer Bridge Assistance Payment Program, for which USDA is expected to release payment rates next week. Ahead of that official announcement, University of Arkansas economists estimate rice payments could approach $115 per acre, though statutory payment caps will limit the amount many farmers actually receive.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“You know, I’ve seen some other figures kind of siding more like $50, considering that $155,000 payment cap,” says Mollie Buckler, CEO of U.S. Rice Producers. “While I think it will help some farmers, this is not putting huge profits in their pockets.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Buckler says the assistance might keep some producers afloat short-term, but it does not address the underlying market imbalance. Without structural changes, she warns, the industry will continue to contract.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Absolutely,” Buckler says when asked if farmers could be forced out of business. “Possibly even up to a quarter of farmers having to make tough decisions.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;Pressing Trump to Love Rice &lt;/h3&gt;
    
        Despite the seriousness of the discussion, Kennedy’s exchange with Trump also included a lighter moment that resonated with viewers. The humor underscores a broader effort to build demand for U.S.-grown rice.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“And you love rice, right?” the president asked.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I love rice,” Kennedy replied. “I’m going to get you to love rice too. The next time, you’re not going to have a button for a Coke, you’re going to have a button for rice.” &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It was another moment that stole the spotlight, as Kennedy’s quick-witted response garnered laughs. Kennedy says she even surprised herself in that moment.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It just came out,” she says. “I encourage everyone that doesn’t eat rice on a daily basis to think about making rice part of your diet.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;

        For Kennedy, the experience reinforces the importance of connecting consumers with the people behind their food. Leadership spans generations with the founder serving as CEO since 1981 now working alongside his two daughters who hold leadership roles in the business.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Dalton Farms, Wakeman, Ohio – A seventh-generation family farm led by Rebecca and Edward Dalton.       <title>California's Family Farms Are Disappearing, Meet the Farmer Fighting Back With Remarkable Determination</title>

        Walking the rows of Thomson Vineyards today, it is nearly impossible to imagine that just one year ago, every grape on this ranch — every single cluster — faced a fate no grower ever wants to consider.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;In 2024, fourth-generation wine grower Jennifer Thomson watched as three hundred tons of grapes on her home ranch went unharvested. Not one ton had a buyer. Not one ton had a home.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It could have been the end of the story. Instead, Thomson decided it would be the beginning of a new one.&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;A Year of Unimaginable Loss&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        On a quiet hillside in Napa, Thomson still remembers standing among vines heavy with fruit — and feeling her stomach sink.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“This home ranch produces a little over 300 tons of grapes annually, and in 2024, nearly all of those 300 tons were dropped on the ground and went unharvested.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For most farmers, that kind of loss would take generations to recover from. For Thomson, it became the fire that fueled the next chapter.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Instead of that being the final chapter,” she says, “I got to work.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;An Unconventional Plan&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        &lt;br&gt;Thomson’s plan was bold, unconventional and driven by sheer determination. Instead of waiting on a buyer to show up, she would go directly to the buyer she believed was the perfect fit for her fruit.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;She had one woman in mind.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I knew of Paula. I knew she was crafting some wonderful bubbles, and that she is restoring and breathing new life into her father’s project, maybe bringing it back to the forefront of Napa Valley’s sparkling wine. I am bound and determined to find her.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That woman was 
    
        &lt;span class="LinkEnhancement"&gt;&lt;a class="Link" href="https://www.paulakornell.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Paula Kornell, a fourth-generation sparkling wine producer &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;
    
        whose family helped shape Napa’s sparkling heritage.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Kornell launched her own label in 2017, carrying forward her father’s legacy. For Kornell, winemaking is not just a craft — it is part of her identity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“The wine business is in your blood. My father used to say, ‘You have more sparkling burgundy in the old veins than you do blood.’ And so, you know, it is in your soul. Growing up here, you spend so much time trying to get out of here, and then you realize that the rest of your life you spend your time getting back into Napa Valley.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Thomson admired Kornell’s work from afar. What she did not realize was that Kornell was closer than she ever imagined — literally down the road, not even 3,000' away.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;A Chance Encounter in the Pouring Rain&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        &lt;br&gt;Thomson finally found Kornell at a tasting event on a stormy day —an event Kornell recalls with a laugh.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Pouring down rain and I am by myself. No one is showing up for this event and in comes this one,” she says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;That “one” was Thomson, arriving with purpose and a direct question.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Paula, where are you sourcing these grapes from? It says Carneros, but like which vineyard?” Thomson asked.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;When Kornell revealed the vineyard, Thomson immediately saw the opportunity.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Paula, we have to find a way to work together. I would love to sell you grape. It is about the quality, it is about the terroir, but if you do not enjoy doing business with someone, you probably should not be in business with them,” Thomson said.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;For Thomson, something was missing in Kornell’s previous sourcing arrangement.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“There was a story about the particular vineyard, but it was not from the ground up,” she says. “It was not from the dirt up, and it was not a person behind it. So this is entirely different.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;A partnership rooted in soil, legacy, and shared values — this was exactly what both women had been looking for.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;The Power Duo: Two Women Preserving the Future &lt;/h3&gt;
    
        &lt;br&gt;Thomson is one of the last remaining family farmers in Napa Valley who still grows grapes on land her family has tended for generations. That responsibility fuels her mission: uplifting other family farmers in the region — especially women.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I think the story is being diluted,” she says. “And I think it is so important that news organizations like your own share with consumers. So they can seek out supporting those family farmers.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;The women she surrounds herself with share the same grit.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“We all drive tractors, we roll with our mud boots, but we truly love what we do and we truly respect the generations that have come before us,” Thomson says. “It is inspiring to be with a group of women who really believe in what they are doing for their family legacy.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This female-driven partnership, Thomson says, is rare in the valley.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“Paula is a legend… and I too surrounded myself with other women grape growers who began assuming management roles within their own family. To really be able to find a partnership with Paula and recognize that maybe us as women grape growers have been fortunate enough to recreate what Paula started with her generation of women… it is exciting,” Thomson says.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Kornell says she feels the same.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I am so proud to be working with Jennifer,” she says. “To be able to talk about her family heritage and the fact that we are both two women in this damn wine business in Napa Valley is really… it makes me very happy and excited about the future.”&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h2&gt;A Father’s Legacy, A Daughter’s Determination&lt;/h2&gt;
    
        Thomson’s dad — the third generation — spent most of his life working an off-farm job to allow the vineyard to survive. Today, he gets to watch his daughter secure its future.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“I am thrilled because not only do I get to answer to my mentors who year after year said, ‘Why have you not done a deal with Paula?’ I can now say I have done a really wonderful deal with Paula.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;But for Thomson, the partnership is about more than business. She’s created her own group of close-knit family farmers in the area, other family farmers who just so happen to be women. &lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;“It is about enjoying being in business with someone, and sharing with consumers that there are real people that do their own work. We drive our own tractors, haul our own fruit, write our own contracts,” she says. “We do not have a long payroll of people helping us do that.”&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;Together, Thomson and Kornell are bringing authentic, family-grown, California wine to consumers who crave stories rooted in the land and the people who care for it.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;
    
        &lt;h3&gt;Writing the Next Chapter&lt;/h3&gt;
    
        &lt;br&gt;What began as a heartbreaking harvest with no buyers has transformed into a revitalized future for Thomson Vineyards.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;It took grit. It took going direct.
