Iowa Young Farmer Honored with Top Producer’s Horizon Award

January 21, 2019 02:24 PM

Anthony Schwarck of Schwarck Farms, a row-crop and beef finishing operation in Riceville, Iowa, was recognized with the 2019 Tomorrow’s Top Producer Horizon Award at Farm Journal Media’s Top Producer Seminar in Chicago.

Sponsored by Pioneer, the Tomorrow’s Top Producer Horizon Award recognizes a producer under the age of 35 who demonstrates excellence in the business of farming. This includes marketing, farm finance and technology, as well as family and employee relations. Applications are received from young farmers across the country and judged by a panel of industry experts.

In 2004, Schwarck became the fourth generation of his family to farm, by joining his parents, Dan and Laurie Schwarck, and grandparents, Chris and Ann Schwarck. In 2006, Schwarck started farming 160 of his own acres. Today his operation includes 1,200 acres of corn and soybeans.

In 2013, along with his wife, Aarika, Schwarck started a beef finishing operation. In the first year, the couple marketed 300 beef heifers. In 2019, they will market 2,500 head of cattle. The Schwarcks excel in farm finance, by carefully monitoring their working capital, reviewing financial statements every month with their lender and constantly analyzing production costs.

Attention to detail is a strength of Schwarck’s, and he applies it to both the crops and cattle. He uses high-tech systems to meticulously record everything from fertilizer rates to individual cattle rations.

The Schwarcks support local organizations, such as the Riceville FFA chapter and Riceville fire department. They are members of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Saint Peters Lutheran Church. They employ two full-time and two part-time team members, and the couple has a daughter, Annalee.

As part of the award and for demonstrating excellence in farming, the Schwarcks received a trip to the 2019 Tomorrow’s Top Producer conference and other prizes from the award sponsor, DuPont Pioneer.
