Benefits of cereal rye as a cover crop
Erosion control
Fast-growing cereal rye creates a ground cover and root system that helps prevent erosion caused by wind and water, reducing soil loss.
Reduction of soil compaction
Even with annual tillage, cereal rye’s deep root system can help prevent soil compaction. Cereal rye prefers well-drained loamy soils but also does well in heavy clays and sandy soils, having a positive effect on overall soil tilth and drainage.
Fast growth habit
Cereal rye is suited for cooler temps, growing faster than wheat and oats in autumn, helping ensure establishment in that short window between harvest and winter conditions unsuitable for crop establishment.
Tolerance of extreme temperatures
Cereal rye is cold-hardy, germinating at temps as cold as 34 F. This crop remains dormant over the winter, withstanding extreme temperatures down to -30 F. Due to its prolific root system, cereal rye can also withstand drought better than other cereal grains.
Weed control
Cereal rye helps control weeds with allelopathic effects, with root exudates that hinder development, survival and proliferation of weeds.
Cereal rye also produces more biomass than other cereal grains when terminated, leaving more residue in fields to suppress weeds.
Challenges of cereal rye as a cover crop
Rainfall and flooding
Excessive rainfall can suppress vegetative growth, and flooding can kill cereal rye entirely. Avoid soils that often become waterlogged in the fall and winter.
Reduced soil moisture
Cereal rye can deplete soil moisture prior to planting if proper termination timing is missed and cereal rye is left in the field too long.
While moisture depletion can be beneficial for removing excess soil moisture in high precipitation conditions where soil is saturated, cereal rye can also make it too dry for optimal germination and development. This can be especially problematic in shallow and/or sandy soils.¹
Nitrogen deficiency
As with soil moisture, the risk of cereal rye tying up nitrogen is related to termination timing. Tall, mature rye ties up nitrogen as it decomposes (nitrogen immobilization), so terminating cereal rye before it reaches this stage is key.
However, when you till cereal rye into the soil, organic nitrogen contained in the rye plant is converted to plant-available inorganic forms. This is called nitrogen mineralization and makes nitrogen available for the subsequent crop to use.
Insect and disease risk
As with any other cover crop, cereal rye can harbor pests overwinter. For example, insects like spider mites lay eggs in rotting plant materials and root rot pathogens can live in cover crops and infect the subsequent crop.
