For years, you’ve probably dialed in corn planting populations the same way most farmers do — checking yield goals, eyeing soil productivity, and following your seed dealer’s recommendations. Those factors still count, but Iowa field agronomist Jared Bergan says there’s another piece of the puzzle that deserves just as much attention: how well a hybrid captures sunlight.
That characteristic, he says, often determines where a hybrid hits its sweet spot for plant population.
The 97% Rule: A New Way to Think About Population
Rather than starting with the question “At what population should I plant this hybrid?” Bergan wants growers to first ask: “How efficiently does this hybrid capture sunlight?”
His target? A canopy that intercepts about 97% of available sunlight — a practical benchmark that signals the crop is using light optimally.
“Once we hit 97% light capture with the hybrid, adding more population past that point does not add any more yield; it actually adds risk,” says Bergan, Crop-Tech Consulting agronomist.
That shift in thinking to a goal of maximizing efficient light use changes everything from hybrid placement to seeding rates to in-season decisions.
Why Leaf Architecture Drives Population Needs
Using two different style of hybrids as examples, Bergan demonstrates in the video available at the link above how different genetics work in different ways. The lesson isn’t about declaring one or the other hybrid superior. It’s about understanding how each is built so you can manage it better.
“What we’re looking at with our plant characteristics is plant height and also the leaf orientation and how that changes sunlight capture,” explains Bergan.
The first hybrid produces broad, pendulum-like leaves that reach farther into the row, creating a canopy that closes fast. The second maintains a more upright leaf angle, especially around the ear leaf and upper canopy, letting sunlight penetrate deeper into the crop.
Neither design is inherently better, Bergan emphasizes. They just capture light differently —and that influences how aggressively you can plant them.
Hybrids with broader, more horizontal leaves often max out light interception at lower populations because the canopy closes sooner. Upright-leafed hybrids typically tolerate —and may even benefit from — higher populations before reaching similar canopy closure.
Greater canopy interception means more sunlight converted into photosynthesis and biomass. But once you’re intercepting nearly all available light, additional plants usually create more competition than productivity.
Finding Your Hybrid’s Sweet Spot
Bergan says some hybrids reach optimum canopy efficiency around 28,000 plants per acre. Others don’t get there until the mid-30,000 range. He adds that the ideal population depends not just on leaf architecture, but also on soil productivity, water availability, fertility, growing conditions and stress tolerance.
The Hidden Cost of Overpopulation
Push populations beyond its sweet spot, and you’re asking for trouble.
When plants get too crowded, competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients intensifies. Plants respond by developing longer internodes, smaller stalk diameters, and higher ear placement as they stretch upward hunting for light.
“And what happens when we grow taller? We shrink down that stalk diameter, which leads to the risk of having ‘weak knees,’ and also standability problems and green snap later on in the season when we get those big windstorms.”
Those standability issues in the hybrid may not show up until late season or harvest. “Mismanaging this hybrid can end up being a headache at harvest,” he says.
Don’t Forget Soil Type in the Equation
Population decisions shouldn’t end with the seed guide, Bergan adds. Soil type and yield environment play major roles in how aggressively you should manage a hybrid.
Lighter soils with limited water-holding capacity usually fit better with lower populations —fewer plants competing for available moisture. More productive soils with greater water and nutrient availability generally handle higher populations better, especially for hybrids designed to perform under those conditions.
“That becomes especially important during grain fill, the last 60 days before black layer,” Bergan notes.
Try the Shadow Test This Summer
One way to do a visual assessment of light capture in the field is to use the so-called shadow test once your hybrids reach significant canopy (starting around V12 or so, and assuming your corn has a decent stand that’s not been pummeled by drought or excess water this season).
Walk between corn rows at solar noon (around 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.) on a sunny day. Evaluate the amount of ground shading between the rows, and look at different areas within the field.
Checking various hybrids in different fields will help you get comfortable making the following visual interpretations:
- At 95% to 97% light interception, you’ll see minimal sunlight reaching the ground. This is the sweet spot you want to achieve with a hybrid planting population.
- Less than 90% light interception: You’ll see a significant amount of sunlight hitting the ground between the rows, indicating you planted too low a population and left yield potential on the table.
- More than 97% light interception: Potentially too high a planting population was used, increasing potential stalk quality issues and lodging risk without yield benefit.
Bergan says you still have time this summer to evaluate hybrids for light interception. Your observations can help in the process of selecting hybrids, planting populations and field placement for 2027.
