Keeping your cotton fields unappetizing for insect pests and inhospitable for weeds requires a season-by-season approach. Before harvest, conduct weed surveys and monitor for Verticillium wilt to inform variety selection and management planning. After harvest, it’s important to develop a cotton insect pest and weed control plan.
The worst cotton insect pests and weeds are numerous and good at hiding. But the good news is they’re also manageable with solid decisions you make this winter.
The secret to cotton bollworm control and mitigation of other cotton insect pests is to focus on the places and objects where they camp out: field edges, neighboring crops and fall residue, to name a few.
Combine this scouting with best management practices that can reduce overwintering pressure and you’ll be in good shape for the upcoming cotton crop.
Common cotton insect pests that overwinter in crop residue
Cotton insect pest control starts with understanding which pests are likely to pose the greatest threat to future crops. Among the most common are seedcorn maggot, stink bugs, cutworms and cotton aphids. They like to overwinter in crop residue and plant debris.
Translation? They’re hunkering down and amassing forces to challenge your productivity in the coming year.
Winter scouting also gives you an opportunity to look for nematodes while soil is moist.
Post-harvest scouting: Focus on these field areas and objects
You can curb these critters’ worst impulses through cotton pest management. In particular, focus on a couple of hotspots where insect pests tend to thrive.
Field edges and neighboring crops
It’s normal for pests such as stink bugs to migrate into your cotton fields at the edges. They make the move from adjacent fields containing crops they feed and reproduce on.
At least 27 plant species, including okra and eggplant, can harbor pests such as cotton jassid.¹ Meanwhile, cotton aphids chow down and multiply on melons, cucurbits, beans and a variety of weeds.
Cotton residue and stalks
Other habitats for cotton pests include cotton residue and cotton stalks. Focus on destroying these after harvest to cut back on overwintering sites with a goal of mitigating cotton boll weevil damage. Keep in mind that many states require growers to destroy stalks by Feb. 1 each year, either by shredding or disking them.²
Winter management to reduce insect pest pressure for next season
A few other tactics can be built into your cotton pest control strategy for additional efficacy.
For insect pest management, winter irrigation is one research-validated approach for curbing overwintering pink bollworm populations between 50% and 70%.³
Flooding fields in December works better than doing so in November or January. Some cotton growers then rotate those fields into small grains or alfalfa to break the pest cycle.
For weed management, use an integrated approach to control weeds around field roadsides, fencerows and ditch banks. This can help prevent the buildup of weed seeds and of insect pests that make their home in weeds.
