This initial from USDA indicates total prevent plant acres of 3.411 million compared to the 2015 final of 6.670 million 3.402 million in August.

Of the 3.411 million prevented planting acres in the update, only Texas reported more than 500,000 acres that were prevented from being planted this growing season.

Texas: 503,514 prevent plant acres, including 385,803 acres of wheat, 12,648 acres of soybeans, 34,917 acres of upland cotton and 25,889 acres of corn.

Arkansas: 486,439 prevent plant acres, including 249,910 acres of wheat, 137,117 acres of corn, 61,828 acres of rice, 29,019 acres of soybeans and 2,591 acres of cotton.

Mississippi: 450,828 prevented plant acres, including 263,527 acres of corn, 181,414 acres of wheat, 2,744 acres of upland cotton, 1,086 acres of soybeans and 1,069 acres of rice.

Louisiana: 439,401 prevented plant acres, including 207,554 acres of corn, 177,789 acres of wheat, 45,727 acres of soybeans, 6,778 acres of rice and 423 acres of upland cotton.

North Carolina: 381,299 prevented plant acres, including 356,623 acres of wheat, 18,091 acres of upland cotton, 3,849 acres of soybeans and 2,017 acres of corn.

South Carolina: 259,409 prevented plant acres, including 227,249 acres of wheat, 13,518 acres of corn, 9,518 acres of upland cotton and 7,141 acres of soybeans.

South Dakota: 249,357 prevented plant acres, including 175,627 acres of corn, 69,645 acres of soybeans and 2,987 acres of wheat.

Comments: The October update from FSA was apparently enough to prompt USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service (NASS) to increase planted and harvested acreage in the Crop Production report by 286,000 acres for corn compared to the June level and only 10,000 acres for soybeans. Cotton was adjusted in the September Crop Production report and this month’s update did not materially change the acreage figure.
