The world’s renewable fuel makers will face a waste oil supply crunch, Bloomberg reports. By 2030, global targets for the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will require at least twice the amount of used cooking oil (UCO) that can be collected in the U.S., Europe and China combined, according to Transport & Environment (T&E) lobby group. That doesn’t take into account the waste oil needed for making other fuels, especially renewable diesel. The group says, “The U.S. and European countries will fall short of UCO supply if they were to bet on this only feedstock” for SAF.

Other findings from T&E:

  • China is “soon to run out” of used cooking oil biofuel due to U.S. and European demand.
  • UCO biofuels consumption rose by almost 40% between 2021 and 2023, but collection rates only grew by 3%.
