Describe one skill you are working to improve upon within your own farm business. Why did you choose to develop this particular skill, and how will you use it?: I’m spending some more time with the welder. Dad, Grandpa and I are not skilled welders. Welding has always been a requirement of our hired hands. Unfortunately, our long-time employee passed away a couple years back. Since then, we’ve been operating without a full-time employee. Welding is something I want to get better at because it’s a useful skill to have on the farm.

Tell us about one project on your farm in the next 12-18 months that has you excited about the future of your operation and your career path: We’re about to put up two new grain bins that will replace three older and smaller bins. We’ll gain over 20,000 bu. of total storage when the project is done. It will change the look of our farm a lot and should bring additional efficiency at harvest in the form of 20 or more truckloads we won’t need to take to town. The bins will also be equipped with gear-driven power sweeps like those in our drying bin. That will be a big advantage over the rest of our bins that require us to carry sweep augers in and out. When the project is done, we’ll have over 170,000 bu. of on-farm storage.

Quotable: I do pretty much everything that needs done, from sweeping the floor in the shop to paying the bills and running the equipment in the field.
