While parts of the country continue to struggle with drought conditions, farmers in corn- and soybean-growing states are hoping for a reprieve from rainfall. What does this weekend have in store for planting opportunities?
“Our models are all showing some decent rains coming through parts of the Central Plains into the lower Great Lakes as we head through the next couple of days and later today,” says AgDay Meteorologist Mike Hoffman. “Also [expect] a weak cool front coming into the Northern Plains that will have some scattered showers.”
However, the main area of the rain will be the North Central Mississippi Valley moving east through the Ohio Valley—that’s already been receiving heavy rainfall.

More high winds expected in parts of Iowa today. Beware of “moon rocks” that will form within 2 – 4 hours after field cultivating in high wind conditions. Adjust your planter row cleaners to move these out of the furrow and prevent stand/yield loss. #ISUCrops #plant20 pic.twitter.com/IOTSMRIbkq

Yesterday I looked at a field with very high white grub and seedcorn maggot pressure. This particular field has high OM and frequently receives hog manure, which attracts seedcorn maggot adults.

Seed treatment and warm temps should help combat both pests. #Plant20 pic.twitter.com/nTjswBj902
