Fertilizer prices, supply chain snafus and a desire for more flexibility have farmers looking at a variety of different options to fuel their corn crops.
Those factors are opening the door for the use of more biological products, according to Azotic Technologies. The company recently introduced Envita, a systemic nitrogen-fixation biofertilizer for corn.
Envita works within plant cells to improve nitrogen availability for the corn crop, boost yield results and contribute to farmers’ sustainability efforts, according to Tom Tregunno, global product manager for Azotic.
“Systemic nitrogen fixation is important because it occurs inside the cells of both corn leaves and roots, exactly where the nitrogen is needed,” Tregunno says.
He says Envita used in-furrow or in a foliar application moves quickly into the plant throughout the foliage and roots and supports the plant as it grows. It then actively fixes N from the air, constantly providing N to the plant throughout its entire growth cycle.
Flexible Application Options
One of the unique positioning points for Envita is that the company encourages farmers to use it in tandem with their standard fertility program.
“Envita consistently delivers an average yield increase of 7 to 9 bushels per acre going with this strategy,” Tregunno says. “In some conditions growers may be able reduce their nitrogen application rates and still see significant yield results; however, the best return-on-investment usually occurs when the grower’s existing nitrogen rates are unchanged.”
He says the price for Envita this season is approximately $15 an acre, which will vary somewhat by retailer.
The pre-mix liquid formulation is ready to use. It’s compatible with leading starter fertilizers (in-furrow) and pesticide tank mixes (foliar). One gallon of product will treat 40 acres (3.2 ounce per acre rate).
“You get the benefit of season-long nitrogen that’s not susceptible to environmental risks, whether you have a really wet season that could cause N loss or in a dry year when the crop can’t access the nitrogen,” Tregunno says.
For assessing Envita’s performance, Tregunno says yield results are the gold standard. “This is a product that’s easy to use, it requires no special treatment or a separate pass or anything, so that’s a benefit. But 95% of the time, we’re saying you’ll see more bushels in the weigh wagon.”
