Every year, farmers face difficult obstacles that threaten their crops’ performance. The true villain of the season takes advantage of crops when they’re at their most vulnerable, steals valuable resources and often promotes harsh environments that invite additional risks. Tough weeds can wreck fields before the season even starts, which is why it’s critical for farmers to have a strong preemergence herbicide strategy to defend their acres from square one.
Jason Gibson, market development specialist with Corteva Agriscience, said preemergence herbicides are essential to defeating these threats because weeds are “most sensitive to herbicides shortly after germination,” allowing farmers to control populations early and reduce pressure on postemergence applications.
“Farmers are likely to find that not using a preemergence herbicide can be costly,” Gibson said. “It can be expensive to fight weeds in-season if populations aren’t controlled early on. Additionally, poor results can lead to more time and more resources than if they had just sprayed a good preemergence residual herbicide followed by a postemergence application.”
Gibson said Kyber® Pro herbicide, which launched in 2025, is an excellent choice for farmers looking to incorporate a preemergence residual solution into their program. Kyber Pro herbicide features three modes of action, including a Group 15, for excellent resistance management and control of more than 50 broadleaf and grass weeds. The herbicide also offers control of notorious ALS- and PPO-resistant weeds like Palmer amaranth and waterhemp.
Farmers who spray Kyber Pro herbicide can expect up to six weeks of residual activity. This long-lasting residual keeps weeds from emerging while widening the window for postemergence applications. Gibson said the biggest strength of the preemergence herbicide is the residual – and farmers in his area have noticed.
“The farmers who used Kyber Pro for the first time last year were really pleased with it,” Gibson said. “They were impressed with the level of clean fields they got and the length of control they received. It really put them in a better position with their postemergence application timing because the rows were so clean.”
Gibson explained Kyber Pro also has the versatility to be used during spring burndown herbicide applications. These applications help farmers kill weeds even earlier, which can help increase soil temperatures at planting and improve plant vigor and standability. Gibson said the herbicide excelled in burndown applications on conventional tillage acres, even at low rates.
“The farmers who utilized tillage up to planting and got some rain or irrigation really saw the effectiveness of Kyber Pro as a burndown option,” Gibson said. “They got impeccable control of grasses and small- and large-seeded broadleaf weeds. Even at 1 pint, the lowest rate, farmers got four to six weeks of control, which is considerably long for the lowest rate on the label.”
On strip or no-till acres, Gibson recommended farmers tank-mix Kyber Pro herbicide with another product, such as Elevore® herbicide, to get the most out of their burndown application and manage tough winter annual weeds.
As farmers finalize their crop protection plans for the upcoming season, it’s important to remember Kyber Pro herbicide can offer premium results in a variety of situations. Discover what Kyber Pro herbicide can do for your operation by visiting Corteva.com/us.
