As ASF Decimates Vietnam’s Hog Herd, Trade Barriers Block U.S. Export Potential

Members of the National Pork Producers Council sent a letter to USTR Katherine Tai about trade with Vietnam. The group says that ASF is impacting the hog herd, but trade barriers are impacting exports.

U.S. pork producers are looking to gain access to another country facing African Swine Fever (ASF): Vietnam.

Members of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) are encouraging their lawmakers to sign a letter that will then be sent to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai. The group says that ASF has spread and decimate hog herds in the country which is increasing the demand for imported pork.

But NPPC says today, there are significant tariff and non-tariff barriers prevent U.S. pork from competing in the country. Domestic pork consumption in Vietnam is greater than 2.5 million metric tons per year. Last year, U.S. pork producers only exported about 25,000 metric tons to Vietnam.
