USDA: Heat Stresses Filling Wheat in Southern Ukraine, Russia

Dry In Argentina; wet in southern Brazil

USDA’s Joint Ag Weather Facility has provided the following weekly weather/crop highlights:

  • EUROPE: Additional Rain Boosts Crop Prospects
    - Persistent showers boost prospects for filling winter crops across much of Europe. Soil moisture remains adequate to abundant for spring wheat and vegetative summer crops.
    - Locally hot, dry conditions in the Balkans reduce soil moisture for corn and sunflowers.
    - Dry weather in Spain favors winter grain harvesting.

  • MIDDLE EAST: Showers Return, But Wheat Harvesting Proceeds
    - Showers in Turkey provide supplemental moisture for irrigated summer crops but are not heavy enough to delay wheat and barley harvesting.

  • FSU: Hot In The South, Showers Fall Elsewhere
    - Heat stresses filling wheat in southern portions of Ukraine and Russia.
    - Widespread, locally heavy showers boost soil moisture for grains and oilseeds from Belarus and northern Ukraine into northern Russia.
    - Showers benefit jointing spring wheat in eastern Russia.

  • SOUTH ASIA: Monsoon Rains In Central And Eastern India
    - Monsoon rains encourage planting of cotton, groundnuts, and rice across central and eastern India.
    - Dry weather limits planting of cotton, groundnuts, and soybeans in western India.

  • EAST ASIA: Too Hot And Dry On The North China Plain
    - Unfavorably hot, dry weather continues for flowering cotton on the North China Plain.
    - Tropical Cyclone Guchol brings flooding rains to coastal Japan.

  • SOUTHEAST ASIA: Tropical Cyclone Talim
    - Tropical Cyclone Talim brings beneficial rains to rice in the northeastern Philippines but causes more coastal flooding.

  • AUSTRALIA: Rain Benefits Crops In The West And Southeast
    - In Western Australia, rain maintains near ideal conditions for winter grain and oilseed development.
    - Soaking rains in southeastern Australia boost prospects for vegetative wheat, barley, and canola.
    - In northern New South Wales and Queensland, dry weather reduces soil moisture for winter wheat.

  • SOUTH AMERICA: Dry In Argentina; Wet In Southern Brazil
    - In Argentina, mild, dry weather helps to further alleviate excessive moisture for summer crop harvesting and winter grain planting.
    - Locally heavy showers persist in southern Brazil, maintaining abundant to excessive moisture for winter grains and sugarcane and resulting in some flooding.

  • MEXICO: Rain Overspreads The Southern Plateau Corn Belt
    - Tropical showers increase moisture for germination and establishment of corn and other rain-fed summer crops.

  • CANADA: Cool, Showery Weather Continues Across The Prairies
    - Spring grain and oilseed planting is virtually complete, and warmer weather is needed to improve growing conditions.
