Raven Introduces Viper 4 Field Computer

Among the features of the new precision ag product are module-based software, and a lighter hardware package, a senior product manager says.

The new Viper 4 field computer from Raven Industries represents the company’s latest innovation for precision ag connectivity inside the cab of growers’ machinery. Shipments are expected to begin in late September.

The product is housed in a tablet that can be mounted vertically or horizontally, depending on operator preference, says Shane Swedlund, senior product manager, applied technology. It represents the successor to Viper Pro, released in 2008, and the fourth generation in the product line.

Integral to the computer is Raven Operating Software, which allows growers to add modules such as weather stations independently of one another using a thumb drive, says Jared Kocer, director of product development. That functionality lets farmers input only the data they need for their specific operation, as opposed to importing data and system updates for activities they might never perform.

Other features of the computer include:

  • Larger display
  • Profile options allow multiple machine operators to set personal display settings
  • Detailed product mix reports
  • Simplified navigation means fewer clicks required to get job started
  • Customization options throughout
  • Slingshot capabilities mean Viper 4 data can be viewed from the office or other remote locations

In the future, the Viper 4 will evolve to perform more work orders and to allow tech-savvy farm operators to program their own modules, Kocer says.
