In most years, Machinery Pete – aka Greg Peterson – says the last week of December and the first week of January are usually slow when it comes to used equipment auctions.
That was not the case at a January 30 farm retirement auction in Mendon, Michigan, last week. The Kuhlman farm sale made this week’s “Pick of The Week” and was helmed by Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company out of Union, Michigan.
“I thought this (sale) was indicative that the market right now is really interesting, because it’s kind of splitting based on what is being sold,” Peterson says. “So, when you are selling, you know what I’ve been saying for years, everybody wants basically the nice 10 year old stuff. Clean, low hour and super well cared for. Those prices are remaining strong.”
Machinery Pete shared the following record-breaking and near record breaking auction results with AgriTalk Radio host Chip Flory on Monday:
- A 2011 John Deere 9530 4-wheel drive tractor (2,124 hours) sold for a record price of $230,000, besting the previous record for that model sold in the U.S. of $225,000. That previous record high was set back in March of 2024 at an auction in Bridgewater, Illinois.
- A 2010 John Deere 8345R pre-def tractor (2,454 hours) sold for $225,750, which is the second highest ever price for that model at auction, according to MachineryPete.com sales data.
- A 2014 Case-IH Miller Nitro 5240 (825 hours) self-propelled sprayer with a 6.7 liter Cummins non-def engine went for $270,000. Pete says it is the highest price he’s witnessed on a Miller Nitro, the previous high being achieved in 2013 at $255,000.
