Pete’s Pick of the Week: 2025 John Deere Sprayer Commands $447,000 at Auction

Plunging late-model availability and steady field demand are driving competitive bidding as the November auction surge kicks off.

A late-model sprayer takes the honor for this week’s Pete’s Pick of the Week: A 2025 John Deere 412R sprayer with 591 hours, See & Spray technology and a 120' boom sold for $447,000 on an Oct. 20 online sale from DPA Auctions.

That price tag is the highest auction price this year for the model. The sale also came in just under the average dealer advertised price on a 2025 412R sprayer at $500,051.

The sale highlights a dramatic shift in availability for late-model sprayers. Comparing Jan. 1 to Oct. 21 2024, to that same time frame for 2026, there has been a 69.2% drop in the number of one-year-old sprayers sold at auction.

The same DPA online sale proved that classic horsepower still commands solid interest: A 1970 International Harvester 1456 with turbo diesel and 9,954 hours sold for $22,600 — edging out the historical average of $22,330 across the last 42 models sold at auction.

Meanwhile, in Seneca, Kan., a state auction on Oct. 24 produced a few noteworthy sales:

  • 2024 John Deere 560M round baler sold for $41,900.
  • 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD LT with 8,032 miles sold for $48,000.
  • 2021 Bobcat S64 with 819 hours sold for $28,700.

Traveling north of the border on Oct. 22 for a sale in Rockglen, Canada, by Ritchie Bros., Machinery Pete highlights a few big ticket items:

  • 2022 Vaderstad Seed Hawk 80’ air drill sold for $249,935.
  • 2010 Case IH Steiger 535 QuadTrac with 6,918 hours sold for $73,552.
  • 2006 Case IH STX530 with 5,814 hours sold for $91,405.
  • 2024 Degelman LR8080 sold for $66,411.

Volume Ramps Up as Pricing Softens

As November approaches, the auction calendar is entering its traditional peak window. According to Machinery Pete, activity ramps up the first weekend of November largely due to fall farm retirement sales.

Overall, auction volume is already running ahead of recent years as there has been a 20% increase in the number of auctions from mid-September 2025 through mid-September this year. However, even with more equipment crossing the auction block, prices has actually shrunk.

Why Late-Model Sprayer Inventory Dried Up

Why have the sales of one-year-old sprayers dramatically decreased over the past two years? Machinery Pete explains that in 2024, dealers pushed one- to three-year-old used sprayers so they would not have to pay interest. Since then, late-model sprayers have hardly sold, and now one-year-old sprayers are competitive when available for auction.

“Bottom line, if people aren’t really buying new equipment and you have to farm the acres you got, then you probably need some high-quality used equipment. That’s where the focus is now and pricing is holding pretty darn strong,” Machinery Pete says.

Machinery Pete previewed an upcoming auction on Oct. 27 for the Fall Inventory Reduction Sale by Armitage Equipment in Meeker, Okla. He says the lineup contains “deep, low-hour” pre-DEF tractors:

  • 2012 New Holland T6050 with a loader and 1,316 hours.
  • 2009 John Deere 7130 with 1,705 hours.
  • 1981 JD 4240 with 3,375 original hours.
