The next time one of your cold chisels gets dull, don’t sharpen it. Take it to the grinder and square off the damaged end. Years ago I had an old chisel that slowly kept getting more and more dull. I found myself grabbing that tool and using its dull end to finish seating bearings in recessed housings, or to drive out damaged bearings and races, more often than I did as an actual cold chisel.
So I ground the end square to give me a better bite when using it as a driver, and it worked even better. Snap-on and Mac tools offer similar tools in kits that provide “blunt” chisels in a range of sizes, from 6" long to 14" long. The 14" tool is great for reaching through and driving out bearing races in wheel hubs.
Those tools get a lot of use, to the point where I regularly have to take their tips to the grinding wheel to keep them “square.” But I still use my original blunted chisel a lot, if only because I like homemade tools that work.
