Corn-for-Ethanol Use Stronger Than Expected

Corn-for-ethanol use totaled 443.6 million bu. in January, according to USDA.

Corn-for-ethanol use totaled 443.6 million bu. in January, according to USDA, topping traders’ expectations of 436.8 million bushels. Ethanol use increased 18.3 million bu. (4.3%) from December but was 20.0 million bu. (4.3%) less than January 2022.

Through the first five months of 2022-23, corn-for-ethanol use was 5.7% behind the same period last year. To reach USDA’s forecast of 5.25 billion bu., corn-for-ethanol use must run 1.8% above year-ago over the final seven months of the marketing year.

Production of dried distillers grains with solubles increased 34,789 tons from December to 1.714 million tons, though that was 214,726 tons less than last year.
