The writing was on the wall for Newcomer Farms long before Glen Newcomer, current owner and operator, took over. In the 1960s his family took a unique approach and incorporated instead of splitting up the farm among heirs.

Since then, the farm continues to grow not only in size, but in different projects and operations as well.

“Diversity is the key to longevity,” the fifth-generation farmer explains. “When I was young, this was a typical small farm in northwest Ohio. We had several hundred acres of ground, my grandmother had chickens, grandfather had cattle, we had silos and a farrow to finish pig operation.”

That diversity that started on the small farm has grown and helped expand into the operation they have today. Newcomer diversified personally as he took over the farm by working as a seed rep, eventually growing seed for companies, selling crop insurance and slowly adding acres along each step.

“It’s been a slow transition, but at the same time I’ve always had these other enterprises that have supplemented or helped our operation,” he explains.

The next big challenge facing his farm is one many farmers endure: transition to the next generation. Newcomer acts as CEO and everyday decision maker right now but is working to fold his son into more and more of these responsibilities so the sixth generation can make their mark on the operation.
