What 2026 Taught Us: Your Go-To Corn Production Guide for 2027

Wet soils, drought and earlier waterhemp shaped 2026. Learn what those trends mean for 2027 corn.

Predictably, many Midwest growers in 2026 faced corn production challenges from weather, pests, diseases and weeds. Yet some of the patterns that emerged surprised even seasoned experts, meaning a solid plan is critical as you pencil in 2027 planting dates for corn.

Here’s a quick corn production guide identifying practical lessons learned this year. Use these insights as you evaluate 2027 corn planting dates and other management decisions.

Corn planting strategies: weather and nutrient management lessons

Extreme weather continued to be a theme for the Corn Belt in 2026, explains Mike Probst, technical service representative for central and southern Illinois, BASF.

Early in the season, several growing regions experienced large rainfall events with multiple inches at a time. That contributed to stunted roots in places. Later, heat and drought arrived with little warning. Roots struggled to find water and nutrients.

What’s the lesson? You should step up risk management even further when planning corn planting dates and other field work. Aim to get a lot done in narrow windows of favorable weather.

“I think they know they have to act, and act very quickly,” Probst says.

Also explore other risk-management investments such as having more controlled drainage so the soil holds as much nitrogen as possible while reducing standing water as well as reducing nitrogen loss through drainage tile. Other beneficial practices include timely split applications of nitrogen and the use of cover crops.

Resources such as the Corn Yield Forecasting Center from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can complement field work. It predicts production outcomes stemming from 2027 planting dates for corn based on management data, verified yields, real-time weather insights and a crop simulation model.

Boost corn yields in 2027: manage risk, adapt your plan and keep weeds in check

Take a strategic approach to your 2027 corn crop, Probst advises. Proactive attention is essential to account for rapid and often unpredictable conditions.

“Scouting needs to be done to determine if we need to adjust,” Probst points out. “Have a very, very well-defined and strong plan going into the year, but you do need to scout in case something changes.”

Waterhemp management is a case in point. Historically, the weed emerged in early May, but Probst received numerous reports of emergence in late and even mid-April 2026. Growers who cut corners on weed management or used a weaker pre-emergence herbicide on their first pass “kind of paid for it later in the year,” he says. By the time things dried out enough to spray, the crop had already passed its labeled growth stages for a second application.

Another weed to monitor in 2027 will be cocklebur. This weed took up residence in wet spots of soybean fields in 2026 and is sure to drop seeds. A residual herbicide such as BASF’s Surtain® can be a very effective tool for addressing this type of pressure in fields that will be planted to corn, Probst says.

Manage pests for maximum corn yield potential

Pest pressure in 2026 has proven to be as unpredictable as the weather.

Ample moisture and relatively cool temperatures during June suggested a bad tar spot year loomed large, Probst says. Yet tar spot remained relatively mild as rain slowed in July and hot conditions kicked in.

Meanwhile, expectations of a late-summer southern rust arrival got upended when the fungus began to show up in July. Probst advises continued monitoring for that disease as well as for gray leaf spot and northern leaf blight, which consistently rob yield even if they’re less damaging than other diseases.

On the insect front, keep an eye out for corn leaf aphids. They emerged again in Illinois in 2026, marking the third year in a row they’ve appeared in the state.
