Global Weather Highlights: Conditions Favorable in South America

Conditions have turned too eat in Southeast Australia.

USDA’s Joint Ag Weather Facility has provided the following weekly weather/crop highlights:

  • EUROPE: Mostly Dry; Crops Enter Dormancy In Eastern Crop Areas
    - Dry weather favors late summer crop harvesting and winter crop establishment over much of northern Europe, although winter grains and oilseeds in Poland, Germany, and the Balkans enter dormancy.
    - Showers across Spain and Italy boost moisture for winter wheat planting but hamper corn harvesting.

  • NORTHWESTERN AFRICA: Showers Return
    - Showers return, maintaining excellent soil moisture for wheat and barley establishment.

  • MIDDLE EAST: Additional Rain And Snow Maintain Favorable Early Wheat Prospects
    - Rain and snow from the eastern Mediterranean into Iran maintain favorable early season prospects for winter wheat and barley.
    - Drier weather in western Turkey promotes late cotton harvesting.

  • FSU: Seasonably Cold; Crops Dormant
    - Cold weather ushers winter crops into dormancy across Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. A shallow snow cover in Russia affords some protection against potential incursions of bitter cold.
    - Locally heavy rain hampers late cotton harvesting in Kirgizia and southern Kazakhstan.

  • SOUTH ASIA: Seasonably Warm, Dry Weather
    - Seasonably warm, sunny weather encourages early harvesting of cotton in southern and western India and promotes winter wheat and rapeseed development in northern India.

  • EAST ASIA: Showers Boost Moisture Reserves For Winter Crops
    - Showers continue to provide favorable moisture for vegetative winter wheat and rapeseed in China.

  • SOUTHEAST ASIA: Beneficial Rains In Java, Indonesia
    - Heavy showers slow rice transplanting in eastern Java, Indonesia.
    - Flooding returns to the eastern Philippines, causing delays to summer grain harvesting and winter rice transplanting.

  • AUSTRALIA: Favorably Dry In The West, A Bit Too Wet In The Southeast
    - In the West, dry weather spurs wheat, barley, and canola harvesting and helps maintain crop quality.
    - Frequent showers in southeastern Australia slow winter crop harvesting, while widespread rains in northern New South Wales delay fieldwork but favor early cotton and sorghum development.
    - Hot, dry weather in Queensland increases irrigation requirements for vegetative summer crops.

  • SOUTH AMERICA: Rain Returns To South-Central Brazil; Argentine Crops Advance
    - Locally heavy showers overspread southern Brazil, bringing much-needed relief from dryness to soybeans and other crops, including coffee and sugarcane.
    - In Argentina, periods of warmth and dryness follow weeks of beneficial rain, promoting the development of winter grains and summer crops.

  • SOUTH AFRICA: Unfavorable Warmth And Dryness Dominate The Corn Belt
    - Showers benefit sugarcane in coastal production areas, but unseasonable warmth and dryness persist throughout the corn belt.
