Can you harvest corn after a frost? While the short answer is yes, frost damage on corn must be managed and monitored carefully to avoid yield loss. Frost impacts corn differently at different growth stages and appropriate harvest and storage strategies must be employed to address frost damage, depending on when the freeze occurred.

Impacts of cold temps before corn harvest
Corn-killing fall frost occurs when temperatures drop to 32 F for at least four hours, or to 28 F for even a few minutes.¹ Low corn temperatures before harvest cause a delay in the grain reaching optimal harvest moisture content due to kernels prematurely reaching black layer or physiological maturity. Yield losses are generally insignificant if frost occurs at R6 stage, when grain moisture is typically below 35%², but grain moisture levels must be monitored to maintain quality and proper storage. Corn test weights will likely be low with late-season frost injury.
Ideal moisture in frost-damaged corn
When frost damages grain, the outer part of the kernel dries faster than the interior, making grain moisture levels appear deceptively low to some moisture meters. It is recommended to dry frost-killed corn 1 to 2% lower than the typical 14 to 15% moisture level prior to storage. Additionally, cooling grain as quickly as possible can help maintain quality.³
When to harvest corn based on frost timing
Depending on when frost occurs, different management strategies can help achieve the best results for silage and grain production respectively.
Frost during corn milk stage
For silage:
After frost at the milk stage, feed corn as green chop or let it dry in the field before ensiling it when it reaches less than 70% to 75% moisture.⁴ If it is ensiled immediately after frost, nutrients will be lost in seepage and silage will be wet and sour. Livestock consumption is often low due to low quality silage.
For grain production:
When frost occurs at the milk stage, yield potential will typically be so low that it’s best to green-chop or ensile whole plants.
Frost during corn dough stage
For silage:
Frost damage during the dough stage can cause green, immature corn to quickly dry, making it look like corn has undergone rapid whole-plant dry down when, in fact, it hasn’t. It is recommended to let corn dry in-field until whole-plant moisture reaches at least 70% to 75%.⁵ This corn is well suited for silage, but you should test silage for moisture and feed value before feeding.
For grain production:
Dough-stage corn will suffer from very wet grain, increasing the risk of ear molds. Wet ears and frost-damaged grain is susceptible to breakage, so reducing cylinder speeds as low as possible is recommended to prevent shatter loss.
Frost during corn dent stage
For silage:
Corn plants killed by frost during the early dent stage must be allowed to dry before harvesting. However, at the late dent stage, frost-damaged corn should be ensiled immediately to ensure adequate moisture for fermentation processes.
For grain production:
The amount of yield loss resulting from frost depends on how much plant tissue is killed. You could escape with only minor yield loss if just a part of the plant tissue is killed or if grain is in late-dent stage.
At the dent stage, although corn may be down to a whole-plant moisture content of 70%, if frost occurs at mid- to late-dent, immediate harvest and ensiling is recommended.⁶
