How to Manage Cotton Contamination: Economic Impact and Prevention Tactics

Plastic, grease and other debris can reduce cotton quality. Here’s how to limit risk.

Cotton contamination from plastic and other debris is a major financial threat to U.S. cotton growers. Just a 4-cent-per-pound price reduction from plastic contamination on a 20 million bale crop would result in $384 million in annual losses.¹

Meanwhile, demand for U.S. cotton is at historically low levels even as yields boom, averaging 919 pounds per acre as of 2025.²

How cotton contamination poses financial risk to your farm operation

In the late 2010s, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Classing Offices began finding cotton and plastic together, likely from cotton module wrap and other sources.³

Contaminated cotton causes economic damage in several ways. These include:

  • Textile manufacturers turn away: Companies that buy U.S. cotton for clothing and other products are less likely to make purchases if quality is lacking.
  • Industry initiatives are compromised: Grower- and industry-led efforts to secure the value of U.S. cotton don’t mean as much if the product is poor in quality.⁴
  • Non-U.S. cotton growers secure the upper hand: Growers might be forced to sell U.S. cotton at a discount compared to cotton from countries such as Brazil.⁵

Although some of these factors are outside of your control, there are practical steps you can take to keep your fields – and your cotton - clean.

How cotton module wrap and other debris causes contamination, affects ginning

Plastic and other debris can create headaches at the cotton gin. Common cotton debris sources include:

  • Plastic such as cotton module wrap: Weather and machine use can cause plastic to wear down and flake off. Equipment can puncture and tear bale wrappers. Plastic twine and rope used to secure bales can also create problems.
  • Rubber such as doffers and moistener pads: These components that pull cotton off spindles can break down. Thousands of tiny black particles can shear off of a single doffer plate, and those particles can’t be removed at the gin.
  • Grease and oil: Dirty picker bars can collect excess grease and oil that then falls into your cotton and stains it.
  • Rags, hats and other items: Gin suction pipes can pull cleaning rags and other items into cotton equipment and your bales. Spray paint used to mark bales can permanently damage your harvested crop. Plant parts, grass and machinery parts can get wrapped up in bales.

In short, once these contaminants are in your harvested bales, usually little can be done to reverse the damage at the gin or mill.

4 tips to avoid cotton contamination

To mitigate the risk of damaged cotton, take these steps.

1. Limit plastic problems

Use cotton rope or cord to tie bales rather than plastic twine. Scout fields and remove any plastic debris that has been blown in by the wind. Handle wrapped bales with care when loading and unloading to avoid cuts and nicks to plastic covers.

2. Mitigate rubber risks

Adjust spindles to ensure proper clearance that avoids contact with rubber doffer pads. Substitute worn columns with non-contaminating parts.

3. De-gunk to limit grease and oil issues

Go over assemblies and picker heads at least weekly, and remove buildup of grease and oil. When possible, use water and other approved wetting agents to keep your harvester’s moistening system operational.

4. Reduce contamination potential from other items

Keep cloth rags, hats and other items away from your equipment. Harvest in optimal conditions to avoid picking up field debris.
