Relationships in this industry help drive success, and Todd Harris works at building relationships with his customers so they know they can call him with questions, concerns and wins. Harris is the sales manager at the Tipton, Indiana, and Fairmount, Indiana, Nutrien Ag locations.

Although he doesn’t consider himself a farm kid, Harris did spend a lot of time with his grandfather who raised show pigs, and Harris knew he wanted a career in agriculture. Through the relationships he developed, he connected with Nutrien Ag 17 years ago and has been with the company ever since. Harris didn’t know much about crop protection products when he first started, but he quickly learned from spending time with his Corteva Agriscience representative.

“Very early on in my career, I learned to lean on my Corteva rep,” Harris says. “I’d listen to her and learn from her on product recommendations and eventually started restating the information to my customers. That helped me tremendously to get started.”

Harris says his relationship with Corteva helped grow his business, and he trusts his Corteva rep to keep him updated on the latest products and recommendations to continue driving his customers’ success.

“Our biggest weed pressures are marestail and waterhemp,” Harris says. “Corteva has a lot of different options to help us control those weeds, and our rep keeps us up to date on the latest products and different modes of action.”

Harris started recommending SureStart® herbicide years ago, and he and his team now are incorporating new products, such as Resicore® REV and Kyro herbicides, from the corn herbicide portfolio. He also recommends Enlist® herbicides and the soybean herbicide portfolio to keep those driver weeds at bay for soybean acres.

“I enjoy working with Corteva because they have great solutions for both corn and soybeans,” Harris says. “But it’s not just the products that help us be successful. We also take time to talk with our farmers throughout the season.”

It’s not just a one-time conversation for Harris. He says his team believes their relationships throughout the entire growing season are what ultimately help them succeed.

“I try to meet with my customers as much as possible,” Harris says. “I want them to feel like we’re a part of their operation — so we scout their fields for them and stay in touch to make sure they’re satisfied throughout the growing season.”

For Harris, there’s no greater joy than at the end of the year when he receives calls from his customers who are excited about their yield results. It makes the long hours during the year worth it, and at the end of the day, it starts with those relationships to help his customers succeed.
