European Monitoring System Lowers Wheat Crop Forecast

Says crop prospects are on track to be “average.”

The European Commission’s crop-monitoring unit has lowered its EU-27 wheat forecast slightly due to lowered yield expectations in Germany, Bulgaria and Romania. However, Monitoring Agricultural Resources (MARS) yield expectations were raised for France and the United Kingdom.

MARS lowered its total wheat yield forecast to 5.34 tons per hectares, which compares to 5.35 tons last year. “The period was characterized by plenty of rain for western and northern Europe as well as Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. Dry period continues for southern Ukraine and more rain is needed in parts of Germany, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary,” it states.

MARS adds, “Below-average temperature accumulation for UK, Ireland and northern Europe as well as western France. First hot spells are recorded for the Iberian Peninsula and around the Black Sea along with a high temperature accumulation in Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine. In general the current prospects for EU 27 yields are on average.”
