Calls from Congress to address issues within the cattle markets continue. Another hearing is now scheduled to happen in Washington next week.

The Senate Ag Committee announced it will hold a hearing Wednesday, June 23, 2021. The hearing will examine markets, transparency and prices from cattle producers to consumers.

The news was welcomed by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) who took to Twitter, saying, “this is an opportunity to educate senators-public on the dire issues family farmers are facing while up against big cattle. Four packers control 80% of the market.”

Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) has also been a vocal proponent of calls for change, including legislation to create more transparent cattle markets.

She also applauded the scheduled hearing, saying on Twitter, “Families win when every segment of the cattle supply chain is thriving. To make that happen, the cattle market needs change. That is why I’m pleased there will be a Senate Ag hearing to look into these issues and why I continue to work to advance my Cattle Market Transparency Act.”
