U.S. biodiesel production amounted to 87 million gallons in the month of July 2012. Production was spread over 103 biodiesel complexes with the Midwest region topping the list of producers at 75% of total output. All told, the 103 biodiesel complexes scattered across the nation boast a production capacity of 2.1 billion gallons per year.
The first half of this year marked a dramatic advance in output compared to the same period last year. January through July production amounted to 609 million gallons - up from year-ago’s 457 million gallons.
Producers sold 70 million gallons as B100 (100% biodiesel) with an additional 18 million gallons of B100 sold in biodiesel blends with diesel fuel derived from petroleum.
Soybean oil accounted for the loin’s share of the biodiesel feedstock January- July 2012 offering up 347 million pounds for consumption followed by 64 million lbs canola, 57 million lbs yellow grease and 45 million lbs corn oil.
