There’s still time to get the plant health™ benefits of Headline® fungicide on soybeans by preventing the worst diseases. The fact is that even the lowest level of disease drains yield from your fields even though the symptoms remain unseen, often hidden beneath the canopy. So the key is to apply Headline now to prevent disease outright and enable your soybeans to benefit from improved growth efficiency and stress resistance.

You can apply Headline between the beginning of flowering and full pod, with the optimal timing being between R2 (full flowering) and R3 (beginning of pod), in advance of disease outbreaks. The benefits of this kind of preventative application have been proven on tens of thousands of acres of on-farm trials over the past three years. In 2006, in more than 750 grower-applied trials, Headline improved soybean yield by 4 to 8 bu/A.

The following section outlines the two most harmful diseases to soybeans and how you can spot them.

Small brown to gray spots (lesions) develop on leaves surrounded by a thin, dark, reddish ring.

Scouting
This is an increasingly common foliar disease of soybeans in the Midwest. Most common in mid to late summer and most damaging in humid, warm conditions.

Soybean Rust Identification
Infects leaves, stems, petioles and cotyledons, causing defoliation and significant yield loss. Begins on the lower leaves of the plant with small gray, tan or brown pustules on the underside of leaves.

Scouting
Infection may occur at any growth stage but generally is prevalent in the mid to late growing season, remaining in the lower canopy until flowering. Epidemics are most severe during extended periods of leaf wetness with temperatures roughly 50-80 degrees.

Look in the lower canopy with a 20X hand lens to detect spores – especially if soybean rust has already been detected in your area.
