The Purdue University Department of Agronomy has updated its Nitrogen management guidelines based on field trials conducted throughout the state of Indiana. The results are specific to Indiana soils, but this is a great resource for Nitrogen management for any corn producer. The report also outlines the balance between the Agronomic Optimum N Rate (AONR) and the Economic Optimum N Rate (EONR) and points out a ceiling for yield response to applied N.
The results of the study show a move away from the traditional yield-based N rate recommendations and toward data-driven recommendations that take N and grain prices into account. This new economic approach is more focused on efficient N use as part of a profitable, environmentally considerate program.
