It was not uncommon to see planted fields underwater just a few months ago. June 2013 was among the wettest on record for many areas, and at that time, we joined the chorus of agronomists and soil specialists advising that the result may be significant N loss. I hit the road and took some photos of waterlogged fields. In one of these, the water was so deep a deer had become stranded in the middle and was struggling with its head just above water, just like the plants themselves.
I revisited those same fields today to see how they look, now that drought is creeping back into the discussion and overconfidence in corn futures depresses crop prices. These fields, despite having been deeply flooded, have recovered nicely. I have included a few before and after shots below...
