UPDATE: More Scientists Against GMO Labels

The Board of Directors for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the most respected scientific organization in the U.S. and publisher of Science magazine, released a statement today pertaining to GMO product labeling.

The board did not specifically reference California’s Proposition 37, but said that mandatory labeling of GMOs, "...can only serve to mislead and falsely alarm consumers. Contrary to popular misconceptions, GM crops are the most extensively tested crops ever added to our food supply. The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the British Royal Society, and every other respected organization that has examined the evidence has come to the same conclusion: consuming foods containing ingredients derived from GM crops is no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques.”

The statement comes as California voters think ahead to November 6 when election day will decide the issue. A French study initially suggested that rats exposed to GMOs in the lab had an increased incidence of cancerous tumors. The study has since been discredited by much of the scientific community, including French Farm, Environment and Health Ministries.
