In an editorial published this morning, the Minneapolis Star Tribune is urging the ban on the sale of raw milk in Minnesota.
The newspaper cites health officials who visited a farm that allegedly is the source of an E. coli outbreak, which sickened several children and one senior citizens. One of the children, a toddler, was hospitalized for several weeks.
Quoting local health officials, the newspaper noted the farm was unsanitary, with cattle housed in a poorly ventilated, manure laden facility. The editorial also chided raw milk advocates who say consumers should be allowed free access to raw milk. The farm has been embargoed from selling raw milk since the outbreak.
Currently, Minnesota law allows the limited sale of raw milk. But it must be purchased in limited quantities directly from farmers.
