Tornadoes and wheat

Tanner Ehmke

Tornadoes and wheat - the two things Kansas is known for other than Dorothy and Toto - aren’t a good combination. Here’s a picture of the wheat damage that resulted from the tornado that hit Chapman, Kan., on June 11.

As you can see, tornadoes aren’t too kind to anything in their path. Between the tornadoes and hail storms, it’s been a rough year for farmers in the Chapman area. Yields last week were in the 45-55 bushel per acre range, which actually aren’t too bad - especially after last year when they didn’t even have a crop due to the Easter freeze.

Special thanks to Jamie Smidt for on the spot news reporting from Chapman!
