The out-of-the-box thinking brought forward by the Bayer Carbon Program has gotten attention from farmer customers as a simple, yet effective opportunity to generate revenue. In fact, the farmer-focused initiative has even garnered the attention of top lawmakers on Capitol Hill as a leader in the carbon market.

“More than a year ago, Bayer began enrolling farmers in our carbon program that pays them to adopt climate-smart agronomic practices, primarily no-till and cover crops,” said Leo Bastos, a senior vice president of Global Commercial Ecosystems at Bayer Crop Science, who recently testified in front of the U.S. House Agriculture Committee on the burgeoning marketplace for carbon credits.

Simply put, Bayer’s Carbon Program provides an opportunity for many growers who wish to, or who are already, implementing climate-smart farming methods. The farmers who enroll will not only help sequester carbon, but they may also see improved soil quality on their own farms. It’s a win for the environment and a win for crop growers.

There are several things that make the Bayer Carbon Program different. First, Bayer pays per acre, which makes calculation simple and the payout clear and certain. Participating growers know their compensation upfront, which simplifies their decision-making process to participate. Second, the program is flexible, allowing growers to select which fields and practices they wish to enroll and adopt, recognizing that not all acres can be treated exactly the same. Finally, Bayer takes care of the measurement and validation of the adopted practices, paying growers after practice verification. Bayer’s industry-leading digital solution, FieldView, does that seamlessly and effectively.

In the words of Lisa Streck, Bayer Carbon Program Lead: “Farmers are our customers, and if we can play a role in connecting them to an additional revenue stream, we’re going to do that. Bottom line, when farmers are successful, we’re successful.”
